Lovely pictures featuring descriptions of sunflower growth stages

The Life Cycle of a Sunflower Sequencing Activity Pack contains three lovely, ready-made resources perfect for teaching children about this beautiful flower:

    • A4 display posters featuring lovely hand-illustrated images that show the different stages of the life cycle of a sunflower. Each picture features a clear description of the sunflower growth stages. This makes a fantastic visual learning resource that will help children remember this life cycle. Posters like this are perfect for displaying in the classroom whilst you're teaching this topic, that way children can refer back to them as they learn. You could also use them in a class activity by mixing up the images on some tables in the middle of the room. Then, work together as a class to place the posters in the right order.
    • Smaller picture cards without descriptions but numbered instead. These can be cut out and stuck in exercise books, leaving a space next to each one for children to write out the description of each sunflower growth stage themselves. Or, kids can use these as a matching activity. Simply cut the number and the picture into two separate pieces, and then ask kids to re-sequence the images by matching the picture to the correct number.
    • A poster displaying the life cycle of a sunflower with arrows leading from one image to another. This poster would make another good addition to a display board, or a handy revision resource for students' exercise books. There's lots of space around each image for children to annotate the poster with descriptions of each sunflower growth stage here too!

More handy resources for learning about sunflowers

After familiarising your children with the descriptions for the different sunflower growth stages, why not get them involved in the process themselves and help them plant their own sunflower seed? What better way to teach them about the life cycle than by getting them involved in it?

This Diary of A Sunflower Booklet is a fantastic learning resource to assist kids through this process. Seeing as their sunflower will take a few weeks to grow, the booklet will help them keep track of everything that happens with spaces allocated for writing descriptions of each sunflower growth stage. It also includes activities and a space to draw pictures or stick photos taken of their sunflower.

For more resources to support teaching about the life cycle of a sunflower, try this informative PowerPoint, our Sunflowers of Varied Sizes Cut Outs or the Sunflower Plant Life cycle Work Sheet for KS1. You can also put up this lovely Sunflower Poster for KS2.

What are the stages of growth for a sunflower?

Here is a brief description of the sunflower growth stages. For a closer look download this Life Cycle of a Sunflower Sequencing Activity Pack and some of our other sunflower resources today!

    1. A seed is planted.
    2. Germination happens, and the seed starts to grow roots.
    3. This grows into a seedling.
    4. This grows into a plant.
    5. Eventually the sunflower opens
    6. As the plant dies it drops seeds on the floor, so the life cycle can begin again.
