Photo will hurt me until I die, admits Hanoi Jane

More than 40 years after she outraged millions of Americans by posing for pictures with North Vietnamese soldiers, Jane Fonda has publicly admitted it was a “huge mistake”.

The actress, who was nicknamed Hanoi Jane after she was photographed in 1972 sitting on an anti-aircraft gun used to shoot down US planes, remains a hate figure for veterans of the conflict.

When survivors of the Vietnam War get together every year to honour their fallen comrades, their biker jackets still carry patches bearing messages such as “Jane Fonda, American Traitor”, and some even more hostile sentiments. And when she appears in public, a knot of protesters is guaranteed to close around her.

Speaking at an event at an arts centre in Maryland, Fonda admitted: “Whenever
