SEATTLE — There’s a new pup at the Woodland Park Zoo, and it’s beating all “cuteness” records.

Sotong, a female Asian small-clawed otter, was born on Dec. 9.

This is the first offspring for mom Little Frei and dad Conner.

Little Frei, who was born at Woodland Park Zoo in 2016, is named after the Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei.

At birth, pups weigh about one-and-a-half ounces, a little more than a slice of bread.

Mom and dad take care for their young, helping feed the little one.

Newborns can’t see or hear, so they depend on their parents to provide nurturing care until they begin to develop their senses at about 3 weeks old.

Sotong had her first wellness exam this week, weighing a little more than two pounds.

She also received her first round of vaccinations.

Asian small-clawed otters are more vocal than most other otter species, and Sotong’s squeals and chirps are loud and clear, an excellent sign she’s bonding with her parents.

Her parents have also begun swimming lessons for the little one, teaching her how to swim in a plastic tub.

Once she masters the tub, she will move on to the outdoor exhibit and large pool, where her parents will keep vigilant watch.

Zookeepers expect Sotong to be available to the public for viewing in early March.
