The best milk chocolate digestive biscuits

The milk chocolate digestive is undeniably the nation's favourite, so we tried 10 to find the very best chocolate topped treat.

A staple in the biscuit barrel and often the first to go, the milk chocolate digestive has always been one of the nation’s favourite biscuits.

In 2018, YouGov revealed Britain’s top five biscuits with two out of five of them being a milk chocolate digestive brand with 82% hailing popular brand McVitie’s as the winner.

The ‘British masterpiece’ was developed much later than its original plain digestive form with McVitie’s creating the ‘Chocolate Homewheat Digestive’ in 1925.

Since then the topping has developed and uses dark or white chocolate as well as other variations of mint, marmalade and strawberries and cream, to name a few.

How we test:

The Good Housekeeping Institute taste test team sampled ten milk chocolate digestives from a range of grocers and one brand to find the perfect choice to sit aside your tea. We looked for a rich topping of milk chocolate with a strong cocoa aroma atop a pleasantly savoury and lightly salted, wheat base. Hoping for a smooth and creamy surface with a crisp but firm biscuit bite – the winner of our taste test may just surprise you.

Sweet, milky chocolate tops a soft yet crunchy, biscuit base. The biscuit has a deeply chocolatey aroma with nutty undertones and a hint of earthiness in the base that is more noticeable in the taste. Though the initial hit is pleasantly oat-y, some found its earthy, roasted aftertaste a bit too strong.

The lightly sweet chocolate topping of this digestive is paired with a wheat flour back note which testers felt produced a salty aftertaste giving it a slightly cheap flavour. Describing a predominately earthy aroma with a sugary hint, the grainy crumb texture was a little messy but gave a good crispy crunch.

The savoury, malt and wheat flavours of this biscuit base work well with its chocolate topping. Featuring a slight bitterness from the strong cocoa akin to a darker chocolate, the opposite can be said for its milkier and milder aroma. Testers loved the good crumble of the base with a creamy chocolate surface but found the gritty bite from the sugar unpleasant.

The enticing caramel notes and subtle creaminess of this chocolate topping become a little lost in the strong, overall wheat-y flavour. Despite the similarly earthy, wheat flour dominance in the aroma, notes of a gentle chocolate scent also come through. We enjoyed its soft crunch but overall felt the biscuit was too dry

The rich and creamy milk chocolate aroma of this digestive topping compliments the oat-y undertones. With a slight saltiness coming through on the biscuit base it balances well with the delicate and creamy chocolate which isn’t overly sweet either. Though the wheat-y taste of the base was perhaps a little too earthy and the texture slightly dry, its initial crunch is satsifying.

This biscuit has a well-balanced rich cocoa and earthy aroma, with a smooth chocolate layer sitting atop a lightly crumbly base - to give a crunchy bite from the sugary grain. Its pleasant milk chocolate taste is sadly overshadowed by the strong base. Though delicious, with malty notes and salty undertones, we wished for a better balance.

Though a touch too sweet this biscuit has a lovely, milky flavour from the chocolate coating. We enjoyed the salted, wheat base despite its odd synthetic backnote. The aroma hits a good balance of chocolate sweetness plus a wheat-y undertone. The smooth and neat chocolate layer is pleasant against the crumby base for a satisfying crunch.

The creamy chocolate topping of this digestive works well with the buttery biscuit and helps to combat the slightly too salty base which is missing any depth of flavour. The somewhat drying, grainy texture still gave a crisp crunch and the aroma had an enticing combination of cocoa powder and wheat-y earthy notes though this was a little overpowering.
