Sanding Blocks
Sanding blocks can substantially improve and ease the work of sanding wood. Sandpaper held directly in the hand can both produce an uneven surface, and invite splinters into one's hand and fingers. Compared to an electric sander, one can work more sensitively and slowly, removing only as much material as necessary with a sanding block. This can be especially important when working with thin veneers, which can be sanded through in a moment's inattention, revealing the base wood, and necessitating removal of the veneer and starting again.
A clean, even surface is the foundation and most important part of any wood finish. Any carelessness when sanding will come back to haunt the woodworker when the finish is applied - this is when mistakes often first become visible. Every type of machine sander leaves a distinctive pattern on the wood. Orbital sanders especially can leave lovely whorls on the surface of the wood. These often rest hidden in the grain until the first coat of finish is applied and have reduced even the most stoic woodworkers to weeping despair. Close attention to the surface with a sanding block as the last step before finishing can do much to avoid these kinds of nasty surprises.
But we must also add that here at Fine Tools, we feel that the best finished surfaces cannot be achieved by sanding, but with a very finely adjusted smoothing plane with a razor-sharp blade and sometimes a well-tuned cabinet scraper. With these tools one can achieve a surface that needs no extra treatment and provides the best base for many kinds of finishes. But it is true that these methods require a lot of practice to perfect, and are not suited to all jobs and all kinds of wood. Many paints and varnishes also work best over the lightly broken wood fibers that sandpaper leaves on the surface.

You’ll appreciate the solid workmanship and ergonomic 2-component handgrip of this sanding plate. The 2.5 mm thick aluminium base plate is lined with foam rubber 2.5 mm thick. This provides a soft and yet not too flexible sanding surface. The sanding paper or emery cloth is held by two strong spring clips. The practical thing about the size of this sanding block is that you can buy common 230 x 280 mm commercial sheets of sandpaper and simply cut them into 4 pieces. This tool is ideal for clean and quick sanding of large flat surfaces. Made in Japan.

This sanding block shaped like a file is very practical for working on smaller pieces. The plate is 1.5 mm thick steel, and covered on both sides to use the very common Velcro sandpaper types. Having both sides of the plate covered with the hook material allows you to switch instantaneously between two different grit sizes when working. The tool comes with three pieces of sandpaper in 80, 120, and 240 grits.

Backed with loops for the Velcro style sanding blocks. These work on our tools Nr. 312864, 312865, 312866. For the narrow sanding block Nr. 312865, you cut the sheet in half. For the sanding "file" Nr. 312866 you cut the sheets in three pieces. The size of the grit is printed on the backs of the sheets to ease choosing the right paper.

This sanding block is sized to make use of an entire 230 x 280 mm (9 inch x 11 inch) standard sanding sheet, which will be divided into 6 pieces. The size of the sole of this sanding block is 100 x 75 mm (4 inch x 3 inch). The clamping knob draws the paper tight as it is loaded. With a 2-1/8 inch (54 mm) wide running surface machined at a right angle to its face, this block lets you accurately sand stock square and to size. Jointing stock by sanding instead of planing reduces the risk of splintering and chipping on thin stock, difficult grain, or even lacquered or painted moldings.
The wooden knob is angled to help you apply equal force to the sole and face, and can be positioned at any point along the length of the sander, locking in place with a simple twist of the knob. The body is extruded aluminum with a black anodized finish. Compatible with any shopmade shooting board sized for our shooting plane, it has a 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) wide lip along the bottom of the face that keeps the sander from widening the shooting board track.
Available in 8 inch (203 mm) and 16 inch (406 mm) lengths; the long sander makes sanding long edges more efficient, since it maintains contact with the work over a larger area. Each sander comes with six 1-1/4 inch (32 mm) wide strips of PSA-backed sandpaper – two each of 120x, 180x and 220x aluminum oxide grit with a zinc stearate coating. The strips are 9 inch (228 mm) long for the short sander and 17 inch (432 mm) long for the long sander.
