A Lautoka cabbie says thieves made off with cassava he had planted to supplement his taxi income.

Samson Silus said 34 ready-to-harvest cassava plants were uprooted from his backyard farm on Monday night.

“When I woke up on Tuesday, I discovered that someone or maybe a group of people had taken away 34 good, matured cassava from the plantation and left only one for me,” he said.

He said the taxi business had slowed down considerably and he had been doing plumbing work on the side.

Mr Silus said his backyard garden had been supporting his family with fresh vegetables, including chillies, tomatoes and eggplant.

“I earned close to $200 from my last cassava harvest and it is so sad that people have to steal other people’s hard work.”

Mr Silus claimed he lodged a complaint at the Lautoka Police Station.

Questions sent to police spokeswoman Savaria Gonedua on the claims by Mr Silus remain unanswered.
