Life Cycle of a Plant and Pollination

Life Cycle of a Plant Plants – seed germination seedling (sprout) --takes in WATER thru roots/produces FOOD in its leaves/passes food & H2O in stem-- full grown plant with flower (flowering plants – make seeds) some flowers produce fruit (that fruit holds the seeds of the plant). --Flowers/fruits/cones= seeds for REPRODUCTION-- Life Cycle – distinct stages that make up an organism’s life.

- Pollination occurs in the flowers - The seed is formed after pollination - This is when the cycle begins again

Pollination is the process by which pollen is transferred in plants or between plants Self-pollination – within the plant Cross-pollination – between plants By wind By insects and animals By humans

Seed Dispersal Seeds are scattered in different ways- Some coast along the currents of the wind Some are transported by water Transported by animals- Attachment to fur (humans – shoe strings, pant legs, etc…) Stomach (Scat) Burying, carrying, etc…

Vocabulary Germinate – a seed that sprouts: the first stage of sprouting is the growth of roots Seedling – a seed that has grown roots and begins to grow a stem Runners – horizontal stems
