I have always wondered about the fabulous beauty secrets CATHERINE OXENBERG knows or has discovered herself since she seems to get more and more stunning with age. As a beauty icon since she was a sensation on the successful show “Dynasty,” Catherine Oxenberg has always been television royalty. She also happens to be the daughter of royalty and is a true princess in all the ways one would imagine. I had the pleasure of having an amazing conversation with this inspiring woman and she is full of easy laughter, brimming with beauty knowledge, has an amazingly quick wit and speaks in such lovely words and thoughts that it is as if her voice is what listening to beauty would sound like. So excited to share her thoughts with my GS&E readers. I felt left with a little of her fairy dust and I believe you will too.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU THAT YOU FIND BEAUTIFUL?
I would say that besides nature, my children. The way they express themselves and their awe for life. Their joy and laughter, their sweetness and how they are incredibly present and confident. They are wild and free in a way I don’t think that I ever was. The beauty that comes through them is exquisite. I feel really blessed. I finished a myth class with teacher Sam Christiansen and had been contemplating what it meant to really be an artist. It was time to put my daughter Maya to bed. Out of the blue, Maya, who was four, looked at me and said “There is nothing more beautiful in the world than art and you are art.” This is the gift of my children. What comes through them is beautiful.
WHAT IS A FAVORITE BEAUTY PRODUCT OF YOURS?
I love ILA – a completely organic line of skin care. I use lots of different products. And, I had tried to use natural antiperspirant because of the dangers of aluminum but they just didn’t work at all. I found this essential oil called Amma’s Rose Perfume Oil that has rose and sandalwood in it (which are natural antibacterials) and I use it instead of deodorant. Not only do I smell like a rose after an 18 hour day – but people will actually stop me and ask me what fragrance I am wearing! Just a dab under each armpit, it never fails me!
WHERE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN?
Israel. I had no idea it was so beautiful. My husband and I were there shooting a movie in ’99 and we got engaged in the Church of Nativity which is where Jesus was born supposedly. Floods of tears everywhere we went. We drove all over the country, we baptized each other in the river Jordan. I feel blessed to have had that experience then since now it is much more dangerous.
WHAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU HAVE EVER READ?
I am a bookworm. Books have defined my life. So many have been deeply impactful. I am in a book by Jack Canfield called “Books That Changed My Life.” The most beautiful book is the Bible because it is a testament of man’s commitment to living in communion with God. It would take me lifetimes to unlock all the deep and hidden meanings. Psalms and Song of Songs touched me most as they speak to God so intimately.
WHAT IS AN EVERY DAY BEAUTY RITUAL OF YOURS?
A bath. I can’t live without a bath at the end of each day. Meditation. I am devastated if I am staying with people or at a hotel where the bath looks like a kitchen sink – I have an anxiety attack.
WHEN DO YOU FEEL YOUR MOST BEAUTIFUL?
When I’m vulnerable. I have to constantly challenge myself to be in a vulnerable state. At those times I find myself most beautiful.
DO YOU HAVE A SECRET FOR HOW YOU STAY LOOKING SO YOUNG??
The older I get the more disciplined I have to be and the more mindful I am of what I do.
1. I drink a lot of bottled water. Not distilled water. I don’t believe the body can really absorb the molecules of distilled water. So lots of bottled water all day long helps.
2. I don’t smoke – I don’t drink. I love good wine but my husband doesn’t drink so there is really no point! He hasn’t had a drink since he was 24 and looks younger than me and he looks REALLY young. Alcohol can be dehydrating for some people.
3. I’m careful about what I eat. I try to eat organic only, no processed foods. A cruelty free diet which is really an ethical choice. No sodas. When I cut out all wheat and sugar – I never got sick once. I love sugar so it was really hard but they say sugar causes inflammation which is one of the reasons for illness. I felt unbelievable. I wish it was easier.
4. I started facials – one every other week. It helped my skin tremendously. I have two really good people in Malibu who are fantastic facialists.
5. Lots of laughter – very important.
6. Lots of women friends. Women blossom when they have support.
7. Supplements definitely make a difference. I have been taking this Organic Reserveage with Reservatrol combined with this Tibetan mushroom which will be available in January. By seven days, my skin was glowing and I saw a huge difference. I am going to keep taking it. You can get the Reserveage now at GNC.
WHAT IS A FAVORITE LUXURY OF YOURS?
Massage. I can’t live without a massage. That is a luxury. Phenomenal.
