Things would later take an unexpected turn in her life. At 17, she met Paul Kenneth Bernardo at a conference in Toronto, and they developed a dark, sadomasochistic relationship.

Bernando was allegedly upset that Karla was not chaste when they met. So, she is said to have offered up her 15-year-old sister, Tammy, as a "maiden sacrifice" to him.

Tammy became their first victim in the mid-1990s. Due to Bernardo's obsession with teenagers, Karla helps him molest her by injecting Valium into her pasta. The girl was asleep when he molested her.

Six months before their 1991 wedding, Karla stole the anesthetic agent halothane from the clinic. On 23 December 1990, the couple sedated Tammy with halothane, an animal anesthetic agent, by administering the sleeping pills in a rum-and-eggnog cocktail.

After the assault, Tammy fell sick while unconscious and choked to death on her vomit. Karla and Bernando covered up the assault evidence and called an ambulance after failed attempts to revive her. She passed away at St. Catharine's General Hospital while still unconscious.

Since the autopsy could not detect inhalation anesthetic substances in Tammy's system, her death was ultimately deemed an accident as a result of choking on vomit after consumption of alcohol, despite the chemical burn on her face.

Between 1991 and 1992, the couple assaulted and killed two other teenage girls and made video recordings of both crimes.

On 15 June 1991, Paul came across Leslie Erin Mahaffy, 14, outside her house on his way to steal license plates. She had been locked out of her home for a missed curfew after attending a friend's wake. Paul kidnapped her and drove her in his car to his and Karla's house, where they assaulted and killed her.

Kristen Dawn French, 15, was Karla and Bernardo's last victim before they were arrested. The pair kidnapped her at a parking lot of nearby Grace Lutheran Church. They tortured and molested her over the Easter weekend, then murdered and dumped her uncovered body in a ditch in Burlington.

In 1993, Karla left the marriage and went to the police to report his abusive behavior. The videotapes the couple had made of their crimes clearly showed she not as a victim, as she had initially claimed, but as a willing partner.

Bernando and Karla were apprehended in 1993. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison for manslaught*r, while her now ex-husband was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Between 1987 and 1990, Bernardo committed increasingly vicious serial sex assaults in and around Scarborough. He attacked most of his victims after stalking them as they got off buses late in the evening. There are over 15 known cases of him assaulting teenagers and adult women.

Karla was released in 2005 with nine conditions, including attending therapy, keeping the police updated on her residence and workplace, and never associating with anyone under the age of 16. She attempted to change her name to Emily Chiara Tremblay, but the authorities denied her request.
