Flexibility

Everything you will do in a silks class will be using your own body weight. However, being above the ground brings a bigger element of challenge. Aerial silks help increase flexibility in the body with minimal impact. When your weight is off of the ground, you will strengthen your joints and ligaments. Flexibility is then increased when your body has more freedom to move. If you’re a seasoned yogi, silks will allow you to isolate parts of your body that you haven’t. It will also help you discover areas of stiffness in your muscles that you hadn’t realized were there.

Muscles

Aerial silks exercises are practiced to enhance your muscles. For example, when practicing aerial silks, turning yourself upside down once is equivalent to doing 20 sit ups. Silks exercises help improve your core, arms, legs and grip. Many traditional exercises neglect focus on true upper body strength. Aerial silks classes provide a great workout that will strengthen muscles that might be difficult to focus on in traditional workouts. It is recommended that poses be held for about thirty seconds to increase muscle gain.

Focus

Aerial silks can put you in challenging positions which help you focus on control of your movements. As mentioned, for ample muscle gain, it is recommended that poses be held for about 30 seconds; this pause acts as an anchor to hold the position and increases your focus. It is important to have a good focus, as it can lead to higher concentration skills in other areas of life.

Stress Relief

When you are suspended in the air, deep muscle relaxation occurs throughout the body. This aids in stress relief as an abundance of oxygen goes to the brain, which is also crucial for brain function. Another form of stress relief occurs when pressure is released through the decompression of the spine. Tension tends to build up in our muscles and joints and aerial silks is a good way to release the pressure. This will also help improve posture.
