Let'shope not.The GRA has framed its budget for the2006-07 financial year and at the time thedispute had not been resolved. We have budgeted for a 1.75% increasein turnover in the upcoming financial year.If there are indications the resolution ofthe dispute is resulting in a higherdistribution, we will revise our budget andif possible reverse prizemoney cutsannounced for Brisbane. At the Racing Conference there wasmuch discussion regarding the impact ofthe licensing of BetFair by the TasmanianGovernment and in particular the impact itmay have on the integrity of racing inAustralia.Leaders forthe past 16years in theCollection,Storage andInseminationof FrozenSemen totheGreyhoundRacingIndustryPhil BennettGRA ChairManly Road VetPhone(07) 33969733A harness racing industry representativehighlighted concerns some punters havebeen manipulating prices on Harold Parkraces and making money from the sale ofwagers placed on BetFair. The thoroughbred industry raisedconcerns at the lack of co-operation it isgetting from the Tasmanian regulators andBetFair to identify if licensed persons areutilising BetFair.I am informed BetFair has only juststarted offering services on Australiangreyhounds and at this stage is confined toTasmanian races. The Conference was also informed theNSW Government has agreed in principleto Tabcorp merging its two pools. This decision has the capacity to enticeQueensland punters to bet into the resultantlarger pools and divert income from the* In-house Progesterone Testing* In-house Thyroid Testing* Ultrasound at 28 days(Confirms pregnancy, littersize and health of pups)*Infertility Checks(Male and female)* Semen Bank for studmasters(Approx 40 stud dogs in stock)* Fully secure kennels* Hospital staffed 24 hours per day* Progesterone Testing/Inseminationsperformed 24 hours a day/365days per yearH ospitalQueensland racing industry. From a greyhound perspective,Greyhounds Australasia were pleased toannounce to the Conference that theAustralian Quarantine and InspectionService had agreed greyhounds beingexported from Australia will not be allowedto leave unless they have a passport issuedby Greyhounds Australasia. This will ensure the industry knowswhere greyhounds are going and they arebeing exported for legitimate purposes. The Conference also endorsed the stepsthat the New Zealand government has takenin relation to tax reform of the racingindustry and approaches will be made to theCommonwealth Government to considersimilar changes.Frozen SemenPackageincludes*All progesterone testing* Surgical implant* Boarding* Regular client updates$545Contact Kelly Irving on(07) 39066917Christine Kidd (Veterinarian) - Kelly Irving (Reproduction Technician)219ManlyRdManlyWestBrisbaneThe (June, 2006) Journal Page 2Such changes could impact ongreyhound studmasters and we will followthe progress with interest. It saddens me greatly to write of thepassing of Mick Byrne.I have been a friend of his son Michaelfor more than 25 years, so therefore afriend of Mick's for the same period. He has been a great supporter andcontributor to the Queensland greyhoundracing industry. He was a foundation member of theBrisbane Greyhound Racing Club Inc andmade a life member in 1996.He was on the committee since 1974.Mick had a wonderful sense ofhumour, wide knowledge and lifeexperiences and was great company. THE resolution of the long andbitter battle between Sky andTVN is welcome news to thegreyhound industry.Conservatively, it has cost the industryin Queensland in the region of $500,000.Greyhound turnover held its groundwithin the past year, but the loss in turnoveron southern thoroughbred meetings wassignificant and the reason our Product Cofee dropped. In future, there will be two channels,TVN dedicated to broadcastingthoroughbred racing and Sky which willbroadcast all three codes.Home viewers will also receive anexpanded coverage, that which is ondisplay in pubs and clubs. The GRA welcomes the news, andhopefully turnover will get back to levels ofa year ago and even better to enable us topass this on to greyhound clubs, andobviously then owners and trainers throughprizemoney.TRAINERS are once again remindedthe new grading policy comes into effect onJuly 1.The notable changes to the systemincludes:Distance EventsNow means an event raced over adistance of more than 590m.Novice EventsDarren BeavisMeans a greyhound as at the date ofthe proposed meeting which has not wonother than a maiden, maiden heat andfinal, or maiden heat, semi-final andfinal.A number of interstate tracks have beenreclassified (refer to grading policy on Page38).Trainers must make themselves awareof the transition rule in relation to thegrading of distance events after July 1.TRANSITIONRULEGrading of Distance Events1. For grading purposes a greyhound’sgrade on a Class 1 track in sprint events 520/600m as at 1st July 2006 will retain this grade, providing the greyhound’s grade in a distantGeneral Managerevent of 601m or more is not higher than itssprint grade at the same date.Eg: A greyhound’s grade on a Class 1 trackin sprint events 520/600m as at 1st July 2006 is4th grade and in a distance event at the samedate is 3rd grade, the greyhound will be gradedas a 3rd grade when nominating for 600/710mevents as of 1st July 2006.2. A greyhound’s current grade in DistanceEvents on Class 2, 3 & 4 tracks may be affectedby its Class 1 Sprint grade in accordance with“Grading Penalties” as at 1st July 2006.Should a greyhound’s grade in DistanceEvents on a Class 2, 3 & 4 tracks be higherthan its Class 1 Sprint grade as at 1st July2006, it shall retain this grade.Eg: A greyhounds grade in Class 1 SprintEvents 520/600m as at 1st July 2006 is 3rdgrade and in a Class 2 Distance Event is 5thgrade as at 1st July 2006, the greyhound will bea 3rd grade when nominated for a Class 2Distance Event as of 1st July 2006.Trainers should contact the GradingDepartment, prior to July 1, between 2-3pmto clarify the grade of their greyhound. We expect the grade of somegreyhounds racing over 600m to changewithin the first few weeks of July.Trainers should also be aware that fromJuly 1 the reserve right has been removedfrom Thursday night meetings (only) atAlbion Park. The Board was of the opinion Thursdaynight's meeting is the best this stateproduces and felt the best nominatedgreyhounds on form should obtain a start.Reserves with moderate form should notgain an advantage over dogs with betterform on that night.Danny RyanWasn't it great to see a relativenewcomer to our sport with a finalist in aGroup 1 race in Victoria?Trainer Lee Elgood had Mr Raudonikisin the time honoured Maturity final at theMeadows in May from box three.Mr Raudonikis took his place in thefinal after what many would see as anunlucky second to Collapse in the semifinal.Elgood's faith in his greyhound was notshaken by some pretty poor criticism incertain circles for venturing south, to takeon some of the country's best chasers.Strongly supported by rugby leaguelegend Tommy Raudonikis, the gang haveleapt ahead with great gusto. One of the most pleasing aspects camein a recent discussionwith Elgood was hisview of how much hehad learned from theexperience.Lee has been luckyenough to be stayingwith Len Ketelaar, atrainer with impeccablecredentials and Elgoodwas quick to praiseKetelaar for hishospitality andassistance during thecampaign.Even more pleasingis Elgood's efforts inflying the flag forQueensland.Mind you that willbe no mean featconsidering the effortsof Ron Ball, Tony Brettand way back to RegCrawford with the greatPretty Fearless inWestern Australia andChairman of StewardsSouth Australia. While on the subject of Lee Elgood, youmay have read the article by Gary Keep inthe Courier Mail regarding the attemptedbreak-in at Elgood's kennels prior to theMaturity Final. At this point police have not made anyarrests. However, it should be a stern reminderof those around who would break in forwhatever reason and harm your belovedpets.Security is an on-going problem forprofessional trainers and those who workand have to leave their premisesunattended. We have some great distance racing atAlbion Park courtesy of the Brisbane Club.Queensland will be well represented inthe big events and have a great chance forthe "big end" of the prizemoney to remainin QueenslandI look forward to seeing you at theraces!Sire:Dam:Tony's golf dayThe annual State of Origin golfchallenge will be held on June 9.It will be a four-ball ambroseformat at Windaroo club nearBeenleigh. AS you would be aware, changes to theracing and prizemoney schedule for racing atAlbion Park have been announced startingJuly 1.This decision was reached afterconsiderable discussion between the BrisbaneClub and the GRAQ.When I started at the club in March, oneof my first tasks was to investigate why theclub had been trading in deficit in recentyears. It became apparent very quickly the majorcontributor to the deficits was the percentageof income from Product Co payments that wasbeing paid out as prizemoney by the club. While it is commendable to be paying outa maximum amount of prizemoney, it is not asustainable business strategy to continue thispractice on a long-term basis. The GRAQ and the Brisbane Club haveagreed on a prizemoney payout ratio of 80%of the club's allocation for the 2006-07 year.Overall, the Brisbane Club will pay outapproximately $3.85 million in prizemoneynext financial year out of an allocation ofapproximately $4.76 million. The table (at right) provides a comparisonof prizemoney paid out as a percentage ofProduct Co allocation by the threeQueensland TAB clubs and also the NCAWentworth Park and GBOTA WentworthPark meetings. The table (above right) shows thepercentage of prizemoney paid out when TABon-course and off-course top-ups areincluded. When comparing these figures, 80%appears to be a reasonable amount. As a club, we need to undergo somechange. We have begun to analyse the costsassociated with the business and are workingtowards the development of a plan to guidethe club's future direction.I can assure you we will be looking toeliminate any unnecessary expenditure and wewill be pointing resources where they areneeded most. The increase of revenue fromsources other than the Product Co paymentwill be one of our key priorities.BGRC WinterChasing CarnivalThe next two months will see thehighlights of our Queensland RacingCalendar. The club's Winter Chasing Carnivalkicked off in earnest with the heats of theGroup 1 VIP Petfoods Gold Cup on June 1.The Final is on June 8 and we have a night ofgreat entertainment both on and off the track. The Group 1 Garrards Horse and HoundWinter Carnival Cup heats will be held onJuly 13 with the final on July 20.Silks will be open on both nightsFee$660Naturalmating orstud feeincludesprogesteronetesting andsurgicalinseminationby DrChristineKidd.LukeGatehouseComparison of Club Allocation and Prizemoney PaymentsALLOCATIONS (excl Tote top-ups)ALLOCATIONS (incl Tote top-ups)TAB CLUBS2003/04 2003/04Club Allocation Prizemoney % Club Allocation Prizemoney %Alb Pk $3,864,351 $3,833,765 99.21% Alb Pk $4,150,516 $3,833,765 92.37%GC $1,318,975 $1,052,270 79.78% GC $1,501,797 $1,052,270 70.07%Ips $1,286,850 $1,055,680 82.04% Ips $1,418,259 $1,055,680 74.43%WP NCA $3,623,114 $2,651,025 73.17% WP NCA $3,956,836 $2,651,025 67.00%WP GBOTA $3,889,406 $2,983,045 76.70% WP GBOTA $4,222,736 $2,983,045 70.64%2004/05 2004/05Club Allocation Prizemoney % Club Allocation Prizemoney %Alb Pk $4,355,025 $4,184,480 96.08% Alb Pk $4,661,324 $4,184,480 89.77%GC $1,428,630 $1,135,820 79.50% GC $1,619,320 $1,135,820 70.14%Ips $1,387,650 $1,199,120 86.41% Ips $1,515,128 $1,199,120 79.14%WP NCA $3,758,661 $2,816,180 74.93% WP NCA $4,078,405 $2,816,180 69.05%WP GBOTA $3,979,235 $3,062,350 76.96% WP GBOTA $4,305,228 $3,062,350 71.13%providing an excellent smorgasbord dinnerand a great view of the nights' racing. We need the support of the greyhoundindustry to ensure we can maintain theviability of opening Silks on these occasions. The cost will be $32.50 per person. Julie keeps the place smilingJULIE MacKenzie might be one ofthe new faces around the GRA, butshe's quickly become well known toowners and trainers.Julie (right) is assistant to theGrading Panel and it is her full of funattitude that has quickly endeared herto licensees."If they (licensees) are in a bit of abad mood when they ring up, I makesure they aren't by the time they hangup," said Julie.Julie, 43, has been with the GRAfor several months and admits whenshe initially applied for the position she"knew greyhounds had four legs"."I'd been to the dogs a couple oftimes, but I knew nothing of box draws, fields, grading etc, but have learnt prettyquickly," she told The Journal.Born in Maryborough ("that's theone in Queensland"), she moved toBrisbane in 1990 for better workopportunities. She had been a property manager fora real estate company and also workedfor a building society in her home town. For the past few years she has beenwith Queensland Transport but late lastyear needed a break from the publicservice."I spotted the position with the GRAon the Internet and applied," she said. She loves the work with the GRA."I'm helping with nominations, butdo the box draws, send the fields toclubs, prepare sheets for the stewards, the internet fields, results etc etc," shesaid."I enjoy what I do and I feel I get onwell with the licensees."That's for sure.IT'S said most men cannot be quiteprepared for taking on a role of leadership... but that obviously doesn't include newGRA steward Geoff Small.Few men have joined the ranks ofstewards with better credentials thanGeoff (right).A teacher most of his life, he's alsotrained thoroughbred and harness horseswith success and been a steward at harnessand greyhound race meetings. Now 53, Geoff was born in Bundabergand went to the local state high school. He became a primary school teacherand studied physical education and aftertwo years as a teacher became a smallschool principal.Like many Education Departmentteachers, he traveled around the stateworking in the Lockyer Valley,Stanthorpe, Innisfail, Bundaberg andfinally in Minden."I was in Cairns in the late 80s and tookup a casual stewards position with theharness board," he said. And in 1991 he was chairman ofgreyhound stewards in Bundaberg for ayear. From 1997 to 2000 while in the LockyerValley he held a casual steward positionwith both the harness and greyhoundboards. But Geoff's early study in physicaleducation gave him the opportunity to testhis theories on training and fitness inthoroughbreds and harness horses."I was one of the first to use anaerobicand aerobic training routines, recoveryrates and heart monitors and that was backin the 80s when I was training harnesshorses," he said."I was using interval training in the 80son my horses when it was unheard of here. Now that's the way harness horses andsome thoroughbreds are trained all thetime."Geoff had success in both horseindustries. He won plenty of races with his harnesshorses including Sunstroke a winner ofeight races for the stable. In the early 2000s, he bought six horsescheaply from the Paul Perry stable in NSWand in his first year trainingGeoff madesure he waspreparedthoroughbreds won more than his shareof races."A horse called Pele won the KilcoyCup and we had a lot of success," he said.He retired from school teaching in 1999which gave him the time to spend ontraining. He also became president ofharness horse association BOTRA inQueensland. His time spent as chief steward inBundaberg years ago wetted his appetitefor his now involvement in the industry."I was doing casual work for the GRAand wasn't going to put in for the job here, but had a change of heart and decided toapply," he said.He and partner Carol live in Minden. He is a JP and during his time as ateacher published six workbooks for theEducation Department. There's no question Geoff Small bringsplenty of experience to the greyhoundracing in his new role as a steward at theGRA.PupsForSale$3000each1 Dog, 3 Bitches. Showgroundswouldn't bethe samewithout'Binks'By NATHAN GOODWINIT is hard to imagine racing greyhoundsfrom Townsville before the track evenopened, but that is just what Sam Walker, or"Binks" as he is known to northQueenslanders, did.Sam has no idea how he got that nickname."I'm a fourth generation Sam so I thinkthey called be Binks so I knew who theymeant," he told The Journal.Binks and his wife Marlene travelled400km to Cairns each week to racegreyhounds before the current Townsvilletrack was opened at the showgrounds in theearly 70's."It was a long trip back then, we even wentto Cairns to trial," said Binks."I was very lucky with my first dog calledYellow Jack (Lord Lincoln-Spegra Lass). Hewon his very first start at Cairns and I reckonthat's why I continued to have dogs from thenon."When asked how he got into dogs Binkssays: "Viv Moxham and Kevin Spillane haddogs and I was working as a butcher and Iwould give them the scraps and they gave meYellow Jack."I also had a littermate to Yellow Jack who'Binks" Walkermight be retiredfrom greyhoundtraining but he'sstill a regulararound theTownsvilleShowgrounds.would beat him hands-down up the oval, butafter he was broken-in the breaker said not tobother and he never came home."Kevin Spillane was the best conditionerof greyhounds I have ever seen to this day."He could produce them first up and theywould just win easy."Walker credits Jim Breen as his big "legup"to better things in greyhound racing."Jim would fly up from Tasmania in thelate 70's just to check dogs in Townsville andCairns," said Binks."He taught me how to check my dogs, if Ihad known earlier how to check dogs YellowJack could have been anything he was a verygood dog to get as your first."Walker then worked in one ofTownsville's public pools "Tobruk".While there, he continued to train dogsincluding Tobruk Lad (Mignon Lad-GunSimbi)."He was a pretty handy dog and one dayin a spur of the moment decision I trialledhim and he broke down never to race again."He also raced Ross River Rose (TargodaRoad-Brazen Bandit) who won 14 raceswhich included Cairns and Rockhamptonwins"She was winning at Townsville duringIdol Eyes' devastating run, so it was good towin as many races here as she did," said Binks. The Walkers bred two litters with RossRiver Rose, firstly to Leader's Jester whichproduced Mr Mischief who won five races atTownsville. He was eventually sent south to EdnaStafford where he had four starts for twoseconds and two falls. The second litter was special."They were by Hydrus. There were ninepups and the litter won more than 100 racesbetween them. Hydrus was by Tangaloa," hesaid. The litter included Son of Hydrus, GreatFirst for KerrySEVEN starts, not one placing, and already a ticket forfighting.Normally a trainer might be tempted, or convinced togive up on a dog with that sort of record. But not Kerry-Anne Fountain and Zoomorphic. The dog is the first trained by Kerry and when heovercame all that to land a 6-1 in to 6-4 betting plunge atCapalaba recently, Kerry was overjoyed. And why wouldn't she!Greyhound DataGreyhound breeders should be aware of the value of the fantasticwebsite produced by Gunnar von Boehn in Stuttgart, Germany. The site can be accessed viawww.greyhound-data.comIt's well worth a look for the information available. The best of its kind.Display, River Rose, Long Tan Lass,Nitramar, Hydro River and Hydro Jet."Hydrus was an exceptional dog," saidBinks. "He was trained in Townsville by thelate Gordon 'Fred' West."While on holidays in the south, Fred tookHyrus along and in a sensation he beat PrettyFearless in Brisbane. Hydrus returned to thenorth to win many feature races."Ross River Rose only had the two litters.Walker then trained House of Tears, bredby the late Dave Martin, and owned byMarlene and good friend Rita Grant."At 12 months of age House of Tears wasbeating top grade dogs in trials at Townsville,so we sent House of Tears straight to EdnaStafford where he won at the Gabba, AlbionPark, Gold Coast and Capalaba."House of Tears returned to the north torace with good success. "He was somethingspecial for us at the time."The Walkers have three children but nonewere keen on a life involving greyhounds. In 2001 Binks had a series of kneeoperations which saw him give the dogs away."I still have the kennels, hydrobath, walkingmachine, leads and collars so there is stillhope yet."Sam "Binks" Walker is a life member ofthe Townsville Owners and TrainersAssociation and the Townsville GreyhoundRacing Club.As all north Queenslanders know, Binksis the lifeblood of raising money for the clubs,by still volunteering his time to sell ticketseach week and also help at the trials on aMonday night. When asked about the best dogs he's seen,he said: "I cannot go past Toptigo Flash (byTemlee). She was trained by Tom Hill'sbrother Frank and when her weight was rightshe was almost unbeatable."But we have been very privileged herewith other greats including Gun Simbi, IdolEyes, Devlin Lass, Alpha Duke, Club Time,Bold Sambo, Gardenvale Boy and Ella'sLegend to name a few,"I have seen some good ones here overthe years.ö"Binks Walker is a part of the furniture ofTownsville greyhound racing ... and one ofthe greats himself. The (June, 2006) Journal Page 12

LEFT: Rylee's Revenge holds on to winthe Group 2 Ipswich Auction final.BELOW: Rylee, Greg and Michelle Stellawith their Group 2 winner.IT'S not as though Greg and MichelleStella are quitting greyhound racing, justtaking the opportunity to wind down for awhile. With the couple expecting their secondchild (a girl) in a few months, the seven-daya week restrictions of a thriving racing kennelwill have to take a back seat to child rearing."We'll still have a couple of dogs in work, and still have a broodbitch or two to mateand their pups to rear," said Greg. "But wewill cut down for a while and switch ourpriorities."Rylee's Revenge (Token Prince-TranquilTime) gave the couple a better than could beexpected send off when he led throughout towin the Group 2 Ipswich Auction final. It was a case of third time lucky for theStellas who had also had Rylee's Rewardfinish third to Fool's State and Rylee's Raiderfinish sixth to Don Paco in the previous twoyears.Rylee's Revenge is a real example of Gregand Michelle sticking with their damline andmaking the most of it.Greg moved to his Park Ridge property, first established by Ray and Anne Helton (ofGallant Anne fame) in 1991. One of hisregular visitors for the winter was Gary Inneswho he had met while on a trip to Victoria afew years earlier.Gary brought a bitch called Easy Fashionwith him on one trip and went to Toowoombawith her to win a Cannonball in 25.79 whenthe 457m track record was then held byCredibility at 25.60.At the time Gary Innes was training forDoug Dixon and one of those was EasyFashion."When Gary took Easy Fashion home toVictoria she won at both Olympic Park andSandown," said Greg. "He brought her backthe following year and she won a FFA at theREVENGE!Gold Coast."Greg couldn't help but notice the bitch adaughter of Walkabout Sid-Winning Fashionand a sister to Dixon's top flight galloper StarAffair."Just a few months later Gary rang andasked if I wanted to buy Easy Fashion," saidGreg. "Doug had too many bitches and couldnot breed with them all. I bought EasyFashion, a 31.5kg bitch for $1500 and a pupto go to Doug from her first two litters."So Easy Fashion went to Park Ridge andGreg and Michelle waited for her to come onseason ... and waited."She was five and a half before she did."The Stellas had litters to Acacia Ablazeand their own dog Shape Shifter with EasyFashion.Among the Acacia Ablaze litter wasTranquil Time. "She was the best bitch in thelitter and she had plenty of ability," said Greg.Tranquil Time raced 22 times before astopper bone injury halter her career."She ran 30.48 for 512m at Ipswich andhad trialled 25.27 there in 1999 which wassomething then," said Greg."She also ran 25.90 at Toowoomba, trialled 30.60 at Albion Park when young andwon at Capalaba and the Gold Coast as well."She was a 29kg bitch and had a very goodtemperament."As a broodbitch she suited Greg andMichelle perfectly. Her bloodlines were relatively free ofTemlee. Rocky's racing hasa great historyContinued fromMay editionFor many years in the 90’s Malchi trainerDennis Anderson was premier trainer and amaster conditioner of greyhounds. WhenDennis and his wife Beryl moved from thecoast to purchase the Malchi kennels andstraight track of Richie Wisener it was thebeginning of an era for the Andersons andRockhampton greyhound racing.Over the years Dennis prepared great dogssuch as Zeralite, Eita Wai, Jester Whiz, SmartGamble and Denim Affair but regrettablyother business interests forced Dennis to forgohis love of the greyhounds.Bob and Dawn Wehmeier from theirParkhurst kennel were pioneers in the sportand had many successful years beforeretirement, when Bob moved his reducedtraining operation to near Ipswich where heraced many good dogs in the better company. His hardy old sprinter Intermission andthe old favourite Broken Back Jack are amongthe many Wehmeier memories.Barry and Sharon Morris trained from abase in Gladstone and after good successesearly, particularly with Patty Maree shiftedto Lowood where they are today wellrecognized as both owners, trainers and studmasters.Cawarral properties provided manywinners through the years with the expertiseof Vicki and Dennis Kneen, Noel Bohan andthe Lill family.Noel Bohan had prepared the smart BowVenture and Etzel Girl and possibly the bestbitch from Rockhampton in that era in theshape of Unwanted Flyer.Vicki and Dennis Kneen put the collar onmany good dogs over the years and one oftheir star greyhounds Solid Gamble held thetrack record for many years over the 510metre journey.APRIL 18Stewards present: DM Ryan (chairman), C Clifford(steward), E Murray (registrar).Stewards opened an inquiry in relation to thegreyhound Reet Petite which competed in Race 3 at theGold Coast on April 4.Stewards questioned trainer R Wall of Hendra inrelation to the identification of Reet Petite. Stewardssubsequently allowed the greyhound to take its place inthe field.Further investigation has revealed the greyhoundthat competed at the Gold Coast as Reet Petite wasWacky Frog. As a result, stewards disqualified ReetPetite from the race under AR 84.Wall was subsequently reminded of his obligationsunder AR 142 to clearly identify any new greyhoundsthat take their place in his establishment. As a result of evidence at the inquiry, stewards haveundertaken further investigations into the career racestarts of both Reet Petite and Wacky Frog with bothgreyhounds stood down until these investigations arecomplete.APRIL 27Stewards Present: D Ryan (Chairman), S McGrath(Deputy Chairman), D Kays (Investigations).Stewards opened an inquiry in relation to anincident at the Capalaba on April 15 involving trainerGary Wilson of Chambers Flat and stewards.Stewards questioned Wilson in relation to theincident that took place after the last event.Stewards subsequently questioned stewards CMcLune, J Muir, H Cantwell, trainers P Hull, P Felgateand attendant H Coxsell.Stewards charged Wilson under GAR Rule 125.1.f.(i) which states: Any Person (including an Official) who;The area from Mt Morgan thru toGracemere and onto Ridgelands and Pink Lilywas a very popular greyhound area andproperties were set up to cater for the singlegreyhound or in some case thirty greyhounds. The Ireland, Daniels, Wust, Hall, Smith,Wisener, McCabe, Lippitt, Moore, Pascoeand Harker families were prominent in thewinners circle at Callaghan Park through theearly years and continue to this day.The dominance of the Wisener name ingreyhound racing has continued through thefeats of Don and Glenys over many racingseasons and in recent times Lou & Debbie,Kevin & Sonya and family members.A constant stream of winners flow throughthe Wisener kennels every racing year.Jean Ireland is very proud of the feats ofGozo Tosco who was given to Viv and her asa Sydney cast-off and was dominant inRockhampton in the 1985-86 season winninga total of some 26 races and Greyhound ofthe Year title.John and Cheryl Lippitt raced the brilliantGo Raging who had explosive speed whenthe lids went up and won 29 races around theloam surface of Callaghan Park and was fiveyears of age when last saluting the judge.Jeffrey Kuhl was a very prominent trainerbefore moving into the liquor industry inrecent years and there would not have been amore popular winner ever than Squeaky Boyin the Rockhampton Cup of 1986. Palolo Gold was probably the starperformer for Alec in the eighties.Richard Featherstone raced the brilliantduo of Calliope Rocket and Last Rocketeer, with both greyhounds going on to race wellin the Brisbane area. Most of the big cups including the covetedRockhampton Cup fell to this duo.Lionel Downing was also noted as atrainer who wasn’t afraid to “have a go at thebookies” when he thought his dogs could win.His ultra consistent and brilliant stayingbitch Ultra Mix won many races for the kenneland her track record run of 37.83 over the630 metre journey in 1997 still stands to thisday.Gladstone mentor Dave Black wasfortunate enough to race the brilliant AcaciaRonnie and in later years the track recordholder and a greyhound that could do freakishthings at times, Paddington Bear. This brilliant dog currently is joint holderof the current track record over 407 metreswith his daughter Magani (Phil Sear).Paddington Bear probably did not receivethe better class bitches when he stood at studbut he certainly produced good race dogsfrom the limited exposure.Gladstone trainers over the years haveproduced some great dogs and a few worthyof mention are Ruby Claret (Troy Smith),Morzees Me Mum (Burt Breslin) and WorldTravel (Ken Hazel).Clive and Colleen Thackeray weredevoted fans of the industry and will beremembered for the great “Thacks” dogswhich became household names. There is nodoubt that dogs such as Thacks Gunna(winner of two Anniversary Cups) and ThacksWinfreux in their era were the match of anydogs to grace the Callaghan Park loam.Uncle Reggie was another crowdfavourite from the Thackeray establishment.Alan & Ros Svensen have always had acouple of handy dogs in their kennel. In the mid nineties Balayer, Black Turkand Bronze Nickel were good winners fromthe Lakes Creek Road kennel.Converts from harness racing the Sulifamily of Nankin comprising John, Flo andson Andrew have quickly established areputation as astute trainers of the “dishlickers”.The (June, 2006) Journal Page 16

Historic Racing in RockyThanks to the popularity of the FootyShow and Channel 9 exposure a race meetingon 31 July 1997 set records probably neverto be matched when over 3000 peopleattended to see the great “Nads” race forcharity. Handler Greg Wynn wasoverwhelmed by the response in a country cityand over $6000 was raised for the RoyalSydney children’s hospital.Greg and “Nads” were the talk of the townfor many months after the hugely successfulpromotion.Annual gymkhanas had been held mostyears away from the Callaghan Park complex.Organised by the local Owners & TrainersAssociation these days were hugely successfulsocial days and a chance for trainers andenthusiasts to get together, discuss theirrespective dogs and breeding topics, race theirdogs both young and old, and generally havea good time in a friendly and relaxed countryatmosphere.Originally the gymkhana’s wereconducted at the Malchi straight track butmoved to Ridgelands when a circle track wasestablished there. In what is without doubt the lowest pointin over 20 years of racing, a Sunday in July1988 will live forever in the minds ofgreyhound people in this area. The scene is set at Albert and CarolHarkers greyhound complex at Grange Hillnear Ridgelands where a crowd of some 800is thoroughly enjoying the day and the runnersin the annual Ridgelands Cup were paradingbefore the public for the big event.Without warning some 15 police vehicleswith about 40 operative police converged onthe property, shut down the meeting, and inthe following 2 hours undertook to take namesand addresses and photograph all personspresent in front of their motor vehicles as wellas breath testing most drivers.Various charges had been laid against theproperty owner, a bookmaker, and many ofthe assembled persons. In a couple of cases women in their 70’swere lined up and photographed like commoncriminals in the mammoth operation and oneman was physically dragged to the ground andcharged. Certain individuals were transportedto the Rockhampton city watchhouse forprocessing. It was revealed that police operatives fromMackay to Emerald were involved. To this day nobody has really stood upand explained the reasons behind the policeoperations. Rumours flew thick and fast thatthe raid was drug related, relative to sectionsof the Racing and Betting Act, relative tosections of the Licencing/Liquor Act, ormerely an opportunity to dramaticallyincrease prosecutions in the region. It may be conceded that perhaps a coupleof wagers on gymkhana runners passed handsduring these social days but nothing of anygreat magnitude. There had been stories that the Ownersand Trainers Association had inadvertentlyforgotten to get the proper authority to holdthe trial day. As many people had beencharged for “being present at an unauthorizedrace meeting” that would seem to be the case. The role of the Queensland greyhoundregulatory body in the whole affair wasquestioned as it was later indicated that theauthority had prior knowledge of the proposedpolice sting.Considering that the gymkhana day hadbeen widely promoted in the media andsignage erected the entire way to the propertyit would hardly have been labelled aclandelstein event and the people attendingwould have reasonably believed that this wasonly another social day at Ridgelands. It is believed that charges against thebookmaker were sustained but all chargesagainst the innocent greyhound peopleattending the day were never pursued ascommonsense would indicate that they wouldnever have succeeded. This event shattered the lives of manyfamilies associated with the event but theresolve to continue in the industry was strong. However there has never been anothergymkhana day away from Callaghan Park andliability issues (costs etc) these days probablydictate that there will never be another. In recent times a mine contractor DallasBeckett from Moura purchased a couple ofpups initially and after a couple of years oftrial and error has set about re-writing therecord books.Dallas had realized that you probably willnot get the very good dog from other people’scast-offs and set about buying qualitybreeding bitches and breeding with good studdogs.Dallas Beckett has dominated racing forthe past four or five seasons and greyhoundssuch as Burst of Speed, Rare Speed, and GoSwift have received many annual awards inwinning a string of races in Rockhampton andmore recently in South East Queensland.Byron & Lyn Smith now based at AltonDowns are longstanding greyhound devoteesand have been winners of the owners andtrainers awards many times during anillustrious career. The raffle greyhound which raced asKayona Eagle installed in this couple the loveand thrills of the sport at an early age andthrough the good times and difficult times thisfamily has grown with the industry and thesupport that Lyn and Byron have given to thesport is well known. As the shift away from on course bettingto the Pub Tabs, phone accounts and Pay-TVtook charge, the club encountered financialdifficulties in 2000/2001.The structure of TAB funding was placingenormous pressures on country clubsservicing bank overdrafts and changes to thatfunding are in existence to this day.Racing was put on hold for a short recessuntil restructuring of the TAB disbursementwas in place. With other strategies and great assistancefrom Jim Pearce MP the club is once againracing with good dog numbers and licenseesupport. The future looks good for the localgreyhound industry that harks back to the “tinboy”days of the 1920'.JubileeKennelsRearingTrainingSpellingPre-trainingWhelpingContact:John RutherfordorMariska HerbertJubilee Kennels, 1179 Atkinson'sDam Road, Atkinson's DamPh (07) 54264413or 0422 838478or 0414 242944We provide the very best careand attention to everygreyhound on our property.Congratulationsto the followinggraduatesof Jubilee KennelsReal McCoy (Alb Pk 30.09 Best)Midnite Martini (Ips 30.69Best by 5lgths)Aussie Kim (Ips Mdn 31.21)Our State (heat 26.13 Best, semi Eric Thomson Mem GC)Patmoss State (26.24 GC)C'mon State (24.67 GC)Jet State (GC 21.45)Fool’s Heart (JustPups Currently For Saleby ...* Bearability * Lindale Blue* November Fury * Cyrus The Virus* Fool's Heart * Elite StateThe Best-Heart Spark)* A top class city performer with a 30.06 Albion Park win at 19 months* From an outstanding litter that included: Cardio Spark (6 wins), City Of Sydney (22), Shrewd Slater (12),M’Lady’s Fool (20), Sparkaholic (11), White Spark (13).* Out of Broodbitch gem Heart Spark * Proven at stud * 100% blood brother to Elite StateStud Fee $660* (inc GST. They are not born that way.FMAR can start at the breaking-in stageand progress with further work.Hot and humid weather is mostconducive to the high temperature aspect ofthe injuries, but FMAR can develop duringany season in circumstances of inadequatemanagement and handling.Ever notice our human athletes postrace? They seek shade, have a cool drink, wipetheir head and neck with a wet cool towel, and dash water over their head and face. There must be a lesson there for goodgreyhound trainers?

Revamped Studbooknow on saleTHE studbook has established a reputation over manydecades as the bible of greyhound breeding data. But as theinformation age embraces the greyhound industry and websitesproduce on-line up to date data, the tried and true reading ofbreeding enthusiasts through hard cover studbooks puts itslongevity in question. The knowledge an individual obtains by fullyunderstanding breeding pedigrees cannot be overlooked whenreferring to the greyhound studbook. With the skyrocketingprices of pups and stud services, the small outlay for thepurchase of a book should not be overestimated. Cleverbreeders use the information of pedigrees when determininga potential sire rather than being influenced by commercialmarketing. The 2005 edition has been revamped, as the GreyhoundsAustralasia Directorate recognized the product must becomecommercially viable. The book has changed slightly inappearance, the traditional hard bound, cloth cover, has beenreplaced with a gloss laminated cover. This change withseveral other minor amendments has made the product moreaffordable. The new volume is available from Greyhounds Australasiaat $35 (plus postage and handing). The studbook data can still be purchased in CD form for$27.50 for the 2005 edition or $40 for editions 2004 and 2005.Contact GA on 03 9548 3500 or emailadmin@galtd.org.au to order you copy.Kelvin Tang, Lara Chang, Alex Gauld and Josh Dearnessmeet up with superstar Surf Lorian.Uni studentswon overQUEENSLAND University students have beenflocking to Gatton in search of some nutritious tidbits. The second year veterinary science students have beengiven a group task to study nutrition in small animals.Several groups have picked the nutritionalrequirements of the greyhound and in a bid to find outexactly what those requirements are, have approachedTony and Jane Apap at The A Team stud at Gatton."One of the girls in a group searched the internet andfound our website, contacted us and the visits started,"said Apap. IpswichIt was great to see long time supportersof our Puppy Auction Series, Michelle andGreg Stella, break through for a well deservedwin in the 2006 520m race. With finalists in the previous two yearsyou could certainly say it was their turn towin this year. One of the pleasing commentsduring the series was the positive supporttowards the two-race two distance conceptintroduced this year.Owners and trainers should not forget thatthe second race of the series comes up inOctober over the 431m distance with a$12,000 to the winner final. As the dust settles on the first race of thisyear's series, nomination forms for the 2006Highland Smash Repair Puppy Auction willsoon be available from the club.Pups from this Auction will be eligiblefor a two race series to be run in 2008.Breeders wanting more information aboutthis years Auction should contact the club. The date to remember is the second Sundayin October. As mentioned last month, starting in Juneare a number of restricted 630m races. Thesehave been programmed to assist trainers ingiving young dogs experience before headingto the city. The verbal support has been goodregarding the introduction of these races, nowwe need the support of trainers withnominations.August 15 is Corporate Dollar night wherewill be selling our industry and club to a wideSecretary'sNotesrange of corporate representatives. As the following day is the show holidayin Brisbane, this is a good opportunity to comealong and have a night out without the worryJim Conlon (right) with Truly APrince recent Maiden 1000 winner.of heading off to work next day.More Sponsorship, More Dollars, MorePrizemoney, this is our goal on this night. Our charity pup, who will race for theChildren's Sunshine Ward at the IpswichHospital is about to enter the breaking in stageof her career.Life has been good to date with plenty offree galloping and media appointments takingup her time.We all hope she can deliver on the racetrack in the future and bring lots of excitementto her growing number of supporters.CapalabaThe Club was very happy with the successof the Awesome Foursome recently won bythe Ron Ball-trained Shiokaze. The Committee has requested that anyonewho is interested in contesting a match raceor shootout in the future to contact the cluband every effort will be made to accommodatesimilar races. The timing will be dependant uponavailabiliy of suitable opposition and thepermission of the GRA.The club is investigating buying its ownvideo camera in an effort to further reduceexpenses.Previously a contractor was charging theclub $26,000 a year for this service. It has since been replaced by the hire of acamera from the Ipswich club on race days. This reduced our costs by over 50 percent.Broadcasters are now requiring clubs touse digital cameras so Capalaba is looking atseveral opportunities to pick up an analoguecamera suitable for our needs at the rightprice.Any savings generated after the originalpurchase price is recouped will be returnedto trainers in prizemoney.Beta-K UpdateBeta-K should again beavailable to trainers in early August.I have had a lot of inquiryrecently, especially after thepublication of Part 6 of the MoneySaving Ideas series, in which Beta-K was featured and its many usesdescribed.Vetsearch apologizes for thedelay and be assured they are doingtheir best to get the new andimproved formula if Beta-K backon to the market as soon as possible. In the meantime here are someideas, in brief, how to do the bestfor your greyhounds, using Beta-Cel and other appropriatepreparations.* For routine daily use, selectBeta-Cel as the electrolyte ofchoice. Dosage is 3g (1 levelteaspoon measure) in the morningand in the evening meal.* In warm weather (just aboutover until next summer), feed halfthe dose in the morning and half thedose at night. This ensures better acceptance andmore uniform uptake over the 24 hourperiod. Milk may be used for mixing ifpreferred.* In hot weather (next season), dosecan be increased to 3g in the morningor 3g in the evening. This dose can also be used forgreyhounds in hard training andnervous and excitable greyhounds.* For greyhounds prone todehydration or acidosis, a double doseof Beta-Cel for two or three days willoften rectify the problem.* For the prevention of cramping, give 3g of Beta-Cel in the morningmilk or meal. In the absence of Beta-Kconsider also supplementing withPharma Mag Forte (PMF) tablets.PMF is a proven combination ofMagnesium and Potassium in a uniqueaspartate/orotate form which enhancesmuscle energy, muscle release andmuscle relaxation. It reduces lactateand helps cramps, spasm and aches andpains. This product is featured in ThePerformance Report (available fromNatural Performance Products, PO Box55 Austinmer, 2515.Price is $18, plus $4 postage andhandling) a recent publication abouthandy hints and performance tips fortrainers.Pharma Mag Forte tablets can beused with confidence with Beta-Cel,Recharge and Neutradex to rehydrategreyhounds and aid recovery. These are good therapeuticcombinations and the results maysurprise you.It is a good idea to also add 10g (2level teaspoons) of Calci-D powder inthe evening meat meal, or to the levelrequired proportional to the weight ofthe meat to make up the shortfallsbecause of the low calcium content ofthe meat. After traveling and after racing inhot weather (if Recharge is notavailable), mix half a measure of Beta-Cel, 1 level teaspoon of glucose ordextrose, and 1 level teaspoon of sugarinto one cup (250ml) of water.Offer as a drink to replace fluid andelectrolytes, then give the greyhoundaccess to a bowl of cool, clean water.Do not offer too much fluid prior tokenneling for racing as body weightlimits may be exceeded. There are more tips to Beta-Celthan the above which can be found inPart 6 of Money Saving Ideas, but thisinformation will be a help to trainerswho are anxious to do the best for theirgreyhounds until Beta-K returns toretailers shelves. As soon as this occurs, I will bedelighted to let you know. Early TimesBy Chris McLeodThe greyhound dates back 4000 to 7000 years. There is a great doubt by historiansas to actually the exact age of this breed. There is dispute also as to the possibility it is across between a Celtic hound and a Greek hound.Greyhounds are thought to have originated in Arabia and found their way to Englandwith Celt Traders before 900AD.It is believed there was a Greek influence in the early breeding but it is universallyaccepted the modern day greyhound was developed in England. An exhibition of images and artefacts feature the great Australian tradition ofgreyhound racing and the active role the greyhound has played since the early settlementof NSW.The greyhound was first introduced to Australia by Sir Joseph Banks in 1770 andlater in 1788 during the European settlement of NSW.This exhibition traces the greyhound from these times, where images from this periodfeature greyhounds being utilised for the forage of food by hunting kangaroo and emu.Since then Australians have experienced numerous cultural, political, social andtechnological changes which have all had a significant effect on the greyhound. The public coursing of greyhounds in the 19th century to the 1920s continued untilgreyhound racing was first recognised as an official field racing sport in NSW.During the early days of the 1900s the specific form of greyhound racing known asspeed coursing was rapidly gaining in popularity. This new type of racing meant that each event consisted of a field of up to eightrunners. It replaced the previous format known as Plumpton Coursing, where twogreyhounds would race each other.During those very early times there were several small tracks around the outskirts ofsome country tracks where greyhounds competed. One of the best was a 300-yard grass straight track at Bushfield approximately fourmiles from Warrnambool. This club raced on a Saturday afternoon before good crowds.A bus ran out to the meeting and the local pub was close by. Around 1931 another tracksprung up at the rear of the Christian Brothers College on the outskirts of Warrnambool. This course had an advantage, it was a semi-circular type track.Although it was on the smaller side, the popularity of greyhound racing during thisperiod saw another track spring up at Wangoom, just outside Warrnambool. This trackwas under the management of the Warrnambool Plumpton Club and made steadyprogress as support from local breeders and trainers was very strong.Queensland Pet Food Manufacturing(Shop 4 Highway Shopping Village, Progress Road, Burpengary)Phone Shop (07) 38886863or office (07) 54924317Suppliers of QUALITYFRESH MEATSFROZEN CHICKEN PRODUCTSRED MEATS AND CHICKEN MINCESPECIAL BLENDSCHICKEN WINGSAVAILABLE ON REQUEST CHICKEN NECKSBONESCOOKED DOG ROLLSBRISKET BONESPETZ 2 KG ROLLSROO TAILSVITAL 2KG & 3 KG ROLLSTUCKER TIME 1.5 KG & 3 KG ROLLSDRY DOG FOODDIGGER20 KGPETZ TOTAL15 KGPETZ HI ENERGY 15 KGPETZ CHIC DE LITE 12.5 KGTUCKER TIME 4 KGTUCKER TIME 15 KGThis issue specials:Max's 10kg Baked Biscuits $12 ctnBrisket Bones $1.20 kg20 kg all natural dry dog food$17.50Northern NSW DistributorRICHMOND VALLEY PET SUPPLIES161 A Walker St, Casino, 2470Ph (02) 66627557 Contact SteveOwen EdmondsThe Silver SetSo many years of racing dogs so many years complainingI look around the greyhound tracks at all them trainers agingA sprinkle here a sprinkle there of young ones on their wayBut mostly what I witness are temples going greyCould it be their keeping fit or the love of racing houndsOr are they searching high and low for fortune never foundOr maybe only maybe that their egos somehow seeThat racing dogs is one sure way of getting on TVNo matter how we see it we are an aging breedWe've spent our years of racing dogs with little thought of greedWe race for what we're given not for what we earnTo those that come behind us is a lesson to be learnedThere are the ones that through the years with a little luckHave made a meagre bankroll then quickly gave it upChampions do not last too long they just don’t seem to stayAnd maybe that's the reason for us trainers going greyJust take the time to study catchers heading for the penWatch the handlers on parade, you’ll realise it thenThe grey heads bobbing up and down in unison it seemsHeading for the boxes with an air of hope and dreamsYou’ll notice too that some are smart they cut it short and cleanThat way it doesn’t seem so grey when it shows up on the screenOthers merely shave it off to hide the balding patchesSome wear toupees, hats and caps and anything that matchesDon’t just take my word on this, sit back and observeAll around you’ll notice grey, they cannot be deterredIt is a sport designed for all colours, creeds or agesAs one goes another comes but they all go grey in stagesWe're in the sport for what it is, a challenge and a dareAnd I don’t think it matters much what color be your hairJust find a dog that chases hard, won't fight, can sprint or stayThen you will find a few more years before your hair goes greyCartoonCorner ...by StanWolek'But the advertsaid youwanted a bitchto be serviced... that's not agreyhound, it'sa robot'The (June, 2006) Journal Page 24

Syd NorrisI GREW up as a youngster knowinggreyhound racing only up a straight track inQueensland. My first racing experience was at Kedronin the late 40s.During this time and to the mid-50sstraight racing was conducted at Kedron,Loganholme, Rocklea, Southport, Ipswich,Capalaba and Beenleigh. But in the south, circle racing was alreadypopular so it was only a matter of time beforeit was introduced here. We had alreadyregularly raced at Lismore, Casino, Ballinaand Tweed on the circle.Queensland's first circle racing was atBeenleigh, introduced by Harry Pledger. Itwas a very tight track and it was one trackyou had to give a dog a look at before startingit there. The first turn from the short boxes was anightmare. It wasn't long before Beenleigh was thehub of greyhound racing here and we reallysaw some big names, dogs and trainers.Regulars at the June carnival for theQueensland Cup were Bob Doak, Les Brett,Vince Whittaker, Jack Irwin and FrankBellamy. We always made sure we were there forthe carnival to see some of the best dogs inAustralia.Beenleigh was a punters paradise. Theprizemoney sometimes wasn't even worthcollecting. The betting ring was about 15strong during Cup time, but regularly a dozenat least. And they'd let you on.One I remember was Don Longley whoreally was flamboyant. He sometimes hadpeople fighting among themselves to bet withhim ... he would bet well over the odds almostevery race.Don ended up on the rails at the horses.Harry Pledger did a great job getting someof the greats to race during his Beenleighcarnival each year. Obviously the best wasZoom Top although unfortunately I didn't getto see her at Beenleigh, but I was at HaroldPark one night when she ran.She was the best all-round dog I've everseen. She wasn't a champion, she was a freak. She wasn't the best sprinter I've ever seen, nor the best stayer I've ever seen, but she coulddo it all.She could win 300m and two days laterwin over 700m. She defied all odds in herpreparation. She started 136 times for 68 winsand 39 placings. She broke 15 records andearned more than $60,000.As a sidelight, the best dog I've seen raceis Flying Amy.I remember some really fun days atBeenleigh. One in particular when the luremalfunctioned even before the race meeting.A local, called Albert Norman, was amotorbike speedway rider and the cluborganized for him to ride his bike pulling thelure behind.Owners and trainers had the option to race.Albert rode his bike on the dog racetrack, pulling the lure along. He was fine in the shortraces, but when the distances got longer therewere a few problems. It didn't worry us, we won a race withBillen Boy à bless his hard chasing heart. Hewas a better chaser of the motorbike than thehare.By this time Kedron, Rocklea, Ipswichand Southport straight tracks were closed. The Metropolitan Club opened again atLawnton which suited us because it was justdown the road.Lawnton's opening was a big affair. Plentyof people and some great racing.Racing for us by this time was at Tweed,Lawnton and Beenleigh and we wouldoccasionally head over the border to Lismoreand Casino.Tweed was a night meeting on Mondaysat the old track. Distances were 400 yards and600 yards, and we raced there every Mondaynight. Our bitch Quality Seal was a top graderat the Tweed and easily our best of the time. She was by Sam Billen-Soft Tune. She was areal home-bred.I owned the sire as well. THE Wright family has a colorfulbackground, warm hearts and a passion forgreyhound racing. But their background is a script not eventhe best Hollywood writers could haveinvented.Ken Wright recently grabbed more thanhis 15 minutes of fame when he landedgreyhound racing's ultimate prize, a Group 1victory. For Ken it was this year's GoldenEaster Egg at Wentworth Park. But Ken's come a long way to get to Group1 status. As a young blokegreyhound racing wasfurtherest from his thoughtsuntil the payback of a loanintroduced him to man's best, and fastest, friend.Ken served as a Corporal atthe Victorian barracks beforebeing promoted to RegimentalSergeant Major. One of hisserving lads, named Noel, owedhim $20 but could not pay itback. In those days in the army, there were no rain cheques andKen told Noel what he wouldhave liked to have done to him."I thought about giving hima good hiding but was pulled upat the last minute, thankgoodness, Noel was a championfighter," said Ken.So Ken agreed to take agreyhound Noel offered insteadof the $20. The dog was worthabout $200."I thought this is OK, I may make a littlemore, so I went to every pub from one coasttown to the next south of Melbourne butGary ClarkGalaxy DreamsRearing and Breaking-In FacilitySteve andMichelleKEEP95 Imeson RdYorkleaPhone (02)66637021Breaking-in30 years in the industrySteve is grandson of LilaSimpsonDogs educated for:Steve KavanaghGlenda andJohn DartMick andKay Thrupp$60 per weekNew South Walescouldn't find a buyer. ANGELA Langton is thankful sheignored the advice of several vets to putAuf Wiedersehen down. The former Queenslander is morethan pleased after the smart sprinterrecently won the $50,000 WarrnamboolClassic.Auf Wiedersehen said a swiftgoodbye to the field as he cruised tovictory ahead of Warrnambool trainedduo Dusty Rhode and Classy Rhode."He was born with a deformity in hisleg and he used to get a lot of swelling,"Langton said."Three vets from three differentstates told us to put him down but wedidn’t, we just kept going."In recent times the injury hasn’thampered the brilliant beginner, whichis owned by Langton and her mother SueSmith, of Toowoomba, who also bred thedog.Dusty Rhode ran down AufWiedersehen in the semi-final andLangton was crossing her fingers itwouldn’t happen again in the final."I thought from box one he’d bepretty hard to beat because he’s got a lotof early pace and I thought once he wason the bunny, if he could just keep goingat the end, because sometimes he doestend to be a little bit weaker,’’ she said."I saw the eight looming and I knowit’s a good young pup and I thought‘hello, here we go’."I was just hoping he would keepgoing, especially when the track was wet.I was a bit worried, it makes it a bitheavier, but he did a good job.’’Langton had two other dogs in thesame race, Outmaneuver (eighth) andSchalken (fourth), while her fiance JeffBritton had Lady Alouette (sixth) alsocontesting the final."I just said to him if I can’t win Ihope you do,’’ she said. For Warrnambool trainer NormMcCullagh it wasn’t the fairytale itcould have been.McCullagh landed the trifecta in therace in 2000 with the winning dog beingOur Daisy, the mother of Dusty Rhodeand Classy Rhode. I'm now 66 (I've been indogs for 50 years).I used to get up at 4am and walk thedog before I went to work. He never wona race.Every Thursday and Monday I wentto the dogs at Sandown and Olympic Park.In those years I met and becameacquainted with breederssuch as Rod Deakin and themaster of breeding NoelBanks. One night at Sandownover a few drinks, after Ihad bred a litter in my backyard with limited success,Rod Deakin gave me someadvice."Son, there is only oneway to breed a good litter."He told me how and Iwent out and did just whathe said."First find a goodbroodbitch whose damlinesgo back to Benjamin John,by the leading sire at thetime Temlee. Race her by allmeans."So I went and bought aTemlee-Rogey Girl bitchand named her Tem Tear.(Editor's Note: RogeyGirl was in-bred to the halfsisters Dreams Dian andRipple Jet on the immediatedamline of both sides of her pedigree.)I raced Tem Tear with good success. Shewon at Sandown, Traralgon, Sale, Ballaratand Geelong, over sprint and distance. Shedid the wrong thing at Geelong so I retiredher for breeding.Step two, according to Rod Deakin, wasto put her to a good outcross which I didwith Brown Lad an Irish import who theyear before threw two finalists in theAustralian Cup (Shear Brown and KelvinBrown).Unfortunately he was like so many goodsires, underused. From my litter of three were Pete'sChoice who was going to be anything untilshe was attacked by three Alsatians whilewalking the golf course at night.Brown Tear was a multiple winner onmany tracks, and Tear's Laddie was abrilliant bitch the winner of eight straightat Olympic Park and Sandown.Rod's advice was always give the bestfeed for rearing and lots of running whichI did with these dogs who were reared byJack Kelly at Endeven Hills.I then moved to Queensland and tookTear's Laddie with me. I soon retired herand put her to Kismet Range who couldhave been anything but his time was cutshort by a twisted bowel. Two of the pups were Markaboy andTear's Girl, both exceptional dogs in theirown right.Tear's Girl threw numerous winnersincluding Trojan Tears and Tango Tears, the start of Mick and Helen Ivers' strongline which is still producing winners now.Unfortunately soon after that we gotmore into training than breeding. But eight years ago I said to my wifeLil we would have to start again.HE'S big, brashand opinionated, buthe's also one of themost astute greyhoundbreeders Queenslandhas seen. JohnEdwards has been inthe game for 50 years. He learnt from thebest and ALWAYSseems to have a smartdog, a top gradeperformer. He andwife Lil are always inthe winner's circle. The Journal askedBig John Edwards totell us his story. Putinto his words whathis beliefs are inbreeding thegreyhound. At the time we had a bitch calledMarkaboy's Girl (113 starts).I had to look for a strong, well bred dog(Hanson Diamond, 98 starts) that wouldgive me the genetic strength. No injuries.Take the best bitch from the litter andbreed with her. That bitch is Girl Diamond who had151 starts and was a winner of 11 at AlbionPark and many placings. She was a strong600m and 520m bitch whoalso won over 510m and630m at Ipswich and 479mat Beenleigh. Now you have chasingstrength. The most importantthing for bitches you wantto breed with is don't givethem hormones.Take the chance. If you work the dogshard enough very rarelywill they come on season.Girl Diamond nevercame on until she was fourand finished racing. Then all you have to dois put her to a speed sireand you should havesuccess.Girl Diamond went toYo Yo's Boy for her firstmating and the litter wonmore than 50 races.Diamond Harry is stillracing and winning. Her second litter toBearability has won 52 races and are justtwo years and two months old. Theyinclude Ellie's Diamond, Bears Diamond,Steele Diamond, Diamond Dragur, RosieBourke, Diamond Harry, Special Diamondand Keen Diamond. Her next litter to Surf Lorian areunbelievable as they have just been brokenin and will be anything. Her latest litter to Bitability Bale are acouple of months old and look wonderful.Bitability Bale is another Queensland sirewhich is underused, reasonably priced andmost essentially serves the bitch. No AI or frozen semen ... which in myopinion, will have severe consequencesdown the track. I will not go to a stud dogunless I can have a natural service. No hormones, natural service, biglitters. Girl Diamond's litters have been 10pups, 10 pups, 12 pups and 11 pups. Itspeaks for itself.I have always used local sires as Ibelieve we don't support the local dogenough and they are as good as anythroughout Australia and reasonablypriced compared to many others.Unfortunately we never hear howmany don't make it from the highly pricedsires, only the winners. One would like to see a register of pupsborn, pups who make it to the track andpups who win and place.I don't think there would be muchbetween a stud dog who gets three servesa year to one who gets 144 serves a year ...pro rata. Now breeding these pups is taken overby my wife Lillian who makes sure theyare fed nothing but the best cow's milk, meat, very little chicken and plenty ofbones which is natural calcium. The (June, 2006) Journal Page 28

Spotlight on Breedingby John EdwardsUnfortunately nowadays you can't getsheep's heads which are the best. The pups are wormed once a month, get plenty of iron and running specially inthe nighttime when dogs seem to run a lotmore as it is not as hot. With all our litters, which we onlybreed for ourselves mainly, we always seemto get two or three that soon make it to topgrade at Albion Park.I hope this may help someone who iscontemplating breeding in the future, butone has to be patient as it does not happenovernight.I have taken eight years to get back ontrack. We now have Girl Diamond andpotential broodbitches like Ellie's Diamondand Rosie Bourke and others to come.Prairie Peg ...and much moreEven John Edwards is probably notaware of just how in-bred his originaldamline is.He started with Tem Tear, a daughter ofTemlee-Rogey Girland the saturationof in-breedingcontained in theline and continuingto today's stars ofthe line in KobbleCreek etc isfascinating.Firstly RogeyGirl carried aRasmussen Factorto the half sistersDreams Dian andRipple Jet. Temleealso carries a RFto the littermatesTop Linen andBrenda's Daughter. So Tem Tear was the result of a sire anddam which both carried a RF within thefirst five generations.Edwards outcrossed Tem Tear by puttingher to the import Brown Lad (The GrandSilver-Rosemoth), or so he thought. BrownLad is one of the most in-bred dogsimported to this country. His litter brother Brave Bran was anoutstanding sire success in Ireland frominitially limited opportunities.Brave Bran and Brown Lad's damRosemoth carried a RF to the half sistersPrairie Peg (a legend) and RosemountVixen. Brown Lad then also had a RF tothe half sisters The Grand Mist and PrairieVixen (dam of Prairie Peg). Brown Ladhad another RF to the half brothers PrairieFlash and Pigalle Wonder. And to top this off he also carriedanother RF to the half brother/sisterBallinclea Dancer and The Grand Duchess(both out of famous Quare Fire). As Temlee's grandsire Tivoli Dreamer isby Pigalle Wonder (out of Prairie Peg)there is a huge link to Brown Lad's heavilyin-bred pedigree. So when John Edwards bred TearsLaddie, he had a broodbitch potentialsaturated with some of the most famousAUSTRALIAN WINNING LINESVolume 13 - 2005 $50 (inc postage & handling)Containing all the usual features of the greyhound year: City Winners; Sires, Dams &Maternal Grandsires of City Winners; Western Australia; Australian Feature RaceWinners; Sires, Dams, Maternal Grandsires and Pedigrees of Feature Race Winners;Australian Track Records and Overseas Feature Winners.Cheques/Money Orders payable to:Peter Rose, PO Box 330, Jimboomba, Qld, 4280.Ph (07) 5548 6687broodbitches the world has seen. But it was to get even better. When John was putting Tear’s Laddie toKismet Range (Royal Rumpus-Cindy'sRange) he obviously would have thought hewas outcrossing the bitch. But WaverlySupreme (grandsire of Kismet Range) alsocarries Prairie Peg in his immediatedamline. The Kismet Range-Tear’s Laddie matingproduced Markaboy and Tear’s Girl, whowhile having more Prairie Peg put intotheir pedigree, also had a RF to Elsie Moss(through the half brothers Mister Moss andClay Moss). When it came to mating Tear’s Girl toNew Tears, it might again have seemed afairly outcross mating. But New Tears carried a close-updouble-up of Temlee and New Tears’granddam Rowan Vale is a real example ofthe RF (she has two). The result of thismating of New Tears-Tear’s Girl was thechampion Trojan Tears who obviously bythis time carried an even further saturationof Prairie Peg.Was it any wonder then that she tooproved a great broodbitch as well as agreat stayer. The best of Trojan Tears’ progeny wasKobble Creek (Gun Law Osti-Trojan Tears)and he is saturated with FIVE close-upcrosses of Temlee (more Prairie Peg). But we’ve also seen that Tear’s Girlcarried a RF to Elsie Moss. Pitstock Park, dam of Brother Fox the grandsire ofKobble Creek, also had a RF to Elsie Moss.Temlee was out of a bitch by Mister Moss (ason of Elsie Moss) so the saturation thereof Elsie Moss is huge as well.Let’s go even further with Tear’s Laddieand look at a bitch called Terror Tears(Captain Standby-Trojan Tears). While she might seem a bit of anoutcross being by the Ivers own dogFree Progesterone Test - No pups, full refundELITE STATE $2750(Just The Best-Spark Again)BLACK ENFORCER $1650*(Token Prince-Miss Corleone)SOLVE THE PUZZLE $1650(Light Of Fire-Magic Riddle)EIFFELLA $1100(Token Prince-Miss Eiffel)MODERN ASSASSIN $990(Awesome Assassin-Magic Gairn)CYRUS THE VIRUS $880(Black Shiraz-Mystery Bird)FORTIFIED RUSH* $770(Fortified Speed-Greys Arizona)LOCHINVAR JET $550(Head Honcho-Light Sentence)* Plus surgicialCaptain Standby (Grove Whisper-Bay CityRoller), he still carries a cross of WaverlySupreme (and we have seen he tracesdirectly to Prairie Peg), and his seconddam the champion Bay Road Queen is byTegimi who was out of a sister to Temlee(more Prairie Peg). When Terror Tears was mated toBobniak she produced champion stayer TipTop Tears and a fantastic litter. She went tohim twice with great results both times.Bobniak, while by the import FarloeMelody*, is out of a Brother Fox bitch(more Temlee and a RF to Elsie Mossthrough Brother Fox’s dam). And Bobniaktraces directly to the Temlee bitch Osti Lee.Farloe Melody is in-bred to PrairiePeg’s son Prairie Flash. He also has a RF to Sheila At Last, damof legend Monalee Champion. GroveWhisper* carries a cross of MonaleeChampion to link up with the double inFarloe Melody*, and also has a RF to litterbrothers (out of the famed broodbitchMillie Hawthorn). It gets even more interesting when youconsider the 1955 Irish Oaks winnerPrairie Peg, so dominant in all thesepedigrees, was herself in-bred to the litterbrother/sister Mad Tanist and Astra 2x3.And even further, Mad Tanist, thechampion Irish sire of the 40s, was himselfbred with TWO RF to the sisters NeldinsImprover and Feale Wave, and thebrothers Stormont and Cheerful Charger.EDITOR'S NOTE:The Rasmussen Factor is when adominant female is represented within thefirst five generations of a pedigree on bothsides of the pedigree through two sons, twodaughters, or a son and a daughter. Brad NewmanChanging of the guardAs you would all know, Ray Burmanhas vacated the position of president of theQGBOTA and as vice-president I will bestepping up to helm, at least until the nextAGM.Firstly, I would like to thank Ray for thefantastic job he did during his time aspresident. Not only did he steer the associationwith a steady hand and oversaw asubstantial increase in our membership, butpersonally I will always be grateful for hisguidance. As for myself, I'm a passionategreyhound man. Greyhound racing has beenpart of my family for generations and I havefallen in love with it.I am a great believer it is not only afantastic thing to be involved with but italso a fantastic product I believe has atremendous amount of potential. But for now I pass on the best wishes ofthe members of the QGBOTA to Ray whileensuring our ship stays on its course.Future directionMy ambitions for the QGBOTA are tocontinue to build on our growingmembership, bring more benefits to ourmembers, raise our profile and focus onbeing a respected, pro-active, vigilant, persistent but fundamentally positive forcewithin the industry. The next three to five years will be achallenge to Queensland greyhound racingbut one I am confident we can meet. With a handful of massive issueslooming, I think we all need to all worktogether to tackle them. Now is certainly not the time forcomplacency and we must not let theseissues simply sneak up on us or deal withthem haphazardly. But I also believe it is just as importantto focus internally within the QGBOTA andI will dedicate a lot of my efforts towardsthat.Communication with our members is atop priority, so I am interested in followingLuke Gatehouse's example from theBrisbane Club with the Albion Angle andbring back an association newsletter. We do have several exciting projects inthe works but as you can appreciate it isn'tthe right time to introduce you to them. But keep an eye on the QGBOTAcolumn over the coming months.Support the Winter CarnivalThe Winter Carnival is upon us and theBrisbane Club has an exciting program instore for us at Albion Park.Aside from the action on the track, SilksGBOTA Newsrestaurant will be open on the two featurenights.I encourage everyone to make the effortto support the club and the carnival andbook a table, especially considering thenight will be affordably priced.Bring your family and friends, this is theperfect opportunity to introduce them togreyhound racing.I strongly believe we must worktowards having Silks open on a regularbasis. It is a fantastic way to introduce newpeople to the sport, it is a pathway tointroduce new sponsorship, entertainingand hosting existing sponsors or to justhave a great night out.I think very highly of our sport and Ilove to see it showcased.I also applaud Luke Gatehouse fororganising new chef's menu options at thebistro on Thursdays. This will be a sixnighttrial so I hope it is as equally wellsupported. In closingSome of you may not know me well, soif you see me around any of the tracks, please come and say hello.I am a younger bloke who is alwayskeen to learn more and I take a keeninterest in peoples' thoughts, ideas andopinions and this has only been amplifiedby my new role as president.See you at the Winter Carnival!Next MeetingThe next meeting of the QGBOTA willbe held at Albion Park on July 3 starting at6 pm.MembershipThe membership of the Associationcontinues to grow. We now have more than100 members. We need your support to get a biggersay in the future direction of the industry.Membership costs are $15 for familymembership and $10 for singlemembership. Please contact any of our committee forfurther membership details.Ipswich Greyhound Racing ClubIGRC'Leading allthe Way'Major Race DatesGary Tavener,Greg Cannon,LaurieMeteyard andTrevor TavenerwithBuckinghamChuck.A prince for former trot boysAFTER two decades listening to excuses in the harness racing industry, brothersGary and Trevor Tavener have seen the error of their ways. And when they got chatting to long-time greyhound man Greg Cannon one night atthe Arana Leagues Club in Brisbane, they knew it was time to switch codes."We'd raced trotters for 20 years," said Gary. Sweeping changes at Albion ParkSWEEPING changes have beenannounced to the racing and prizemoneyschedule for Albion Park, starting on July 1.From this date the following Classes ofmeetings will be held:* The first two Mondays of each monthwill be Class 1 meetings with existingMonday Class 1 prizemoney being paid.* The remaining Mondays of eachmonth will be Class 2 meetings.* Thursday racing will remainunchanged.* Friday racing will see the introductionof Class 3 Non-Penalty meetings for reducedprizemoney. The GRAQ and Brisbane Club haveagreed on a prizemoney payout ratio that willposition the Brisbane Club to achieve abalanced budget in the 2006-07 financial year.GRAQ Chair Phil Bennett said: "TheBrisbane Club has been paying out anextremely high percentage of its allocationprovided by the GRAQ as prizemoney in thepast four financial years, including 95% in2002-03, 100% in 2003-04, 95% in 2004-05and an amount anticipated to be in excess of90% this financial year."The Club has therefore had little choicebut to utilise its cash reserves to fund the restof its operations."After negotiations with the Club, we haveagreed on a prizemoney payout ratio of 80%of the club's allocation for the 2006-07 year.Overall, the Brisbane Club will pay outapproximately $3.85 million in prizemoneynext financial year."The Board has recently finalised itsbudget for the 2006-07 financial year and inview of the decline in income fromQueensland Race Product Co Ltd thisfinancial year and there being no sign of thedispute between ThoroughVision and SkyRacing being resolved in the short term, theBoard is unable to make an increase in theallocation to this Club or any other Club inthe next financial year.(Editor's Note: The TVN, Sky dispute hasnow been resolved)"The allocations to all clubs next year willbe maintained at the same levels as the currentfinancial year."The GRA will record a sizeableoperating loss this financial year and isbudgeting for a smaller loss next financialyear."Despite the decline in UNiTAB overallturnover in the past nine months, turnover ongreyhound racing has increased marginallyover the same period."Brisbane Club President Michael Byrnesaid: "The club's reserves have diminished bymore than $1million during the past fouryears."Obviously this cannot continue and asmuch as we would like to maintain our presentprizemoney structure, we now need to take amuch more conservative approach to ourfiscal management."The next 12 months will see the Clubpositioning itself for its future, and strategieswill include actively promoting the club's racenights to social and sporting clubs, attractingand retaining sponsors, reviewing its costs andpaying out prizemoney that the club canafford to pay."The introduction of Class 3 Non-Penaltymeetings comes in as a trial for six months, after the concept was raised by members of aGRAQ industry forum.Greyhounds will be graded in the Non-Penalty meetings based on their Class 3grading as at 1 July 2006. They will not bepenalised a grade for winning an event at theFriday meetings.Prizemoney will be at a reduced rate ofapproximately $630 per race, with the winnerreceiving $360.Mr Byrne said: "The major benefit of thenon-penalty meetings will be that trainers willbe able to introduce their greyhounds toAlbion Park and give them experience at theKirsty O'BrienGAP Newstrack before working them through theclasses."This will give connections an opportunityto win more races with their greyhounds."The club in conjunction with the GRAQwill undertake a review of the newprizemoney distribution formula and FridayClass 3 non-penalty meetings at the end ofOctober 2006.The GRAQ Board also resolved that asof 1 July, reserve rights for Thursday meetingswill be removed. The Board considers that as the Thursdaynight meeting is the industry's flagshipmeeting, the best greyhounds nominated forthe meetings should be drawn based on theRace Order Selection criteria.Currently greyhounds which were drawnas a reserve and do not gain a start at theprevious meeting are included first for thefollowing Thursday meeting, regardless ofform. It is considered such a practice doesnot maximise TAB turnover on events.Making Championsfor 70 yearsVetsearchCustomerService1800 242100Win a VetsearchGift PackAll you have to do is pick a highlight in greyhound racing in thepast 70 years and tell us in a couple of sentences why it was such ahighlight. New owners have anexpectation the dog will fit in well with theirfamily and lifestyle. The first part of the process is a phoneinterview, where we talk about the reasonswhy the person wants to adopt a greyhound. There are so many reasons why a greyhoundmakes an excellent choice for a family. Some have young children and need a dogthat is tolerant and friendly, and easy to handleon a lead. With their children bringing friendsover it is important to have a dog that is notaggressive and does not display guardingbehaviour towards strangers.Other people are busy with full-time work, and need a dog that is happy to lie around allday and does not require many hours ofexercise and training.Retirees might want a dog that is not tooboisterous or energetic. If we know what a person wants from adog we are able to select exactly the rightgreyhound from all of the dogs we haveavailable. It is also important we find out whatother pets the family has, so we can matchthem with a dog that will get along well withthem. Many people who apply to adopt have acat, but only half our dogs have been assessedas being suitable to live with a cat.We ask questions about where thegreyhound will be expected to sleep, andspend most of its time.It is unacceptable a greyhound should goto a home where it will spend its retirementin isolation from people and other dogs. Dogsare pack animals and need company and dailysocial interaction. Most racing greyhounds are used tohaving other dogs around, as well as dailyattention from their trainer. It would be unfairto move a greyhound from this environmentinto one where it would be lonely. As well as asking questions, we provideinformation on how to care for a greyhound.A care handbook is provided to people whoapply to adopt a dog from us.This book is also available on request forpeople who have acquired a pet greyhounddirectly from a trainer, or from another place.Greyhounds have specific dietary, handling, grooming and veterinary requirements thatnew owners need to be aware of.Unless a person can meet all of the needsa greyhound has, they will not be offered adog. After the phone interview we make a homevisit, or if the home is too far out of Brisbane,we require the potential adopter to supply uswith photos of their yard, fences and gates. What we are looking for is a securelyfenced yard that a greyhound will not be ableto escape from, as well as the area being freeof things that may hurt a greyhound runningaround at high speed. It is essential there is shelter availablefrom the sun or from storms. Sometimes weadvise people of modifications that will needto be made before we allow a greyhound togo to its new home.Once a family shows us they arecommitted to owning a greyhound, they canprovide everything the greyhound will need, and they are taking good care of the otherpets in their household, we match them witha suitable dog and another greyhound goesto start a new life as a much loved family pet.The (June, 2006) Journal Page 36

DATE OF COMMENCEMENTThis policy comes into effect on 1st July 2006.PURPOSEThe Racing Act 2002 authorises the Greyhound Racing Authority(GRA) to make policies for the sound management of the greyhoundracing industry. Section 81(r) of the Act requires GRA to make apolicy on handicapping and the appropriate qualifications forhandicappers.“Handicapping” and “handicappers” are not common in greyhoundracing. Generally, in greyhound racing “grading” and “graders”comprise a system similar to handicapping and that system is vital tothe management of greyhound racing. Section 81(r) of the Act appliesto a policy making requirement of GRA in relation to its gradingpolicy.Grading is a prescribed system that aims to:* make racing competitive and interesting;* classify racing greyhounds for programming/nominationpurposes;* clarify the process for the selection in a race. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that grading is, fair, consistent and transparent so that all parties can understand therationale and process of grading. This should result in a system thatindustry participants and patrons understand, accept and support.POLICY STATEMENTGRA will devise and implement a system of grading that aims tomake greyhound races in Queensland fair and competitive. The systemwill be based on sound greyhound racing principles, consistent andthe decision making process will be transparent.Graders’ qualificationsThere are no formal qualifications for graders other than a soundknowledge and understanding of greyhound racing and the rules ofgreyhound racing.GRA senior graders will closely supervise new members of thegrading panel to ensure the grading service is of a high standard.New grading panel members will work with and under thesupervision of senior graders to learn the basic skills they need.Once these graders have demonstrated their competence, undertaken an accreditation process and received approval from theChief Grader, they may grade races without direct supervision.Grading systemThe grading system generally imposes a penalty of a rise in gradeon greyhounds that win penalty bearing races. Conversely greyhounds, unplaced for a prescribed number of starts, revert to a lower grade.APPLICATIONThis policy applies to all race clubs and greyhounds racing inraces in Queensland. This policy relates to the prescribed:* Queensland Grading System* Classification of tracks* Selection Order Of Choice.PROCEDURESGRA and GradersGRA and Graders will ensure that, in all respects, the provisionsof the Grading System, Classification of Tracks and the SelectionOrder of Choice is applied appropriately.ReviewThis policy may be reviewed at any time, but not more than aftertwo years in operation.GRA rules of greyhound racingGRA rules of greyhound racing provide for the application of thispolicy.ATTACHMENTSQueensland Grading System.Race Field Selection PolicySelection Order of Choice.QUEENSLAND GRADING SYSTEMDEFINITIONSDistance event - means an event raced over a distance of morethan 590m.Graded event - means an event restricted to greyhounds of aspecified grade and for which the winner will be penalised under theGrading scale.Novice - means a greyhound, as at the date of the proposed meeting, which has not won, other than a maiden, maiden heat and final ormaiden heat, semi-final and final.Maiden - (1) in relation to a flat race means a greyhound that hasnot won, or been awarded first place in a flat race.(2) in relation to a hurdle race means a greyhound that has notwon, or been awarded first place in a hurdle race.Non-penalty event - means any event, conducted in Queenslandonly, declared by the Authority to be a non- penalty event. For example: Usually an event for which eligible starters arerestricted by a particular age limit i.e. Futurity, Derby, Young Gunsetc.Penalty bearing event - means any event not declared by theAuthority to be a non-penalty event. For example: Usually a graded event.Sprint event - means an event raced over a distance of not morethan 590m.TRACK CLASSThe classification of a track shall be as prescribed by the Authority. As of 1st July 2006, tracks are classified as:* Class 1 (City class)* Brisbane - Monday* Brisbane - Thursday* Interstate - all metropolitan city excepting Darwin and Canberra.* Class 2* Gold Coast - Wednesday* Ipswich - Tuesday* Interstate - as prescribed* Class 3* Gold Coast - Tuesday* Ipswich - Wednesday* Brisbane - Friday* Interstate - as prescribed* Class 4* Bundaberg* Cairns* Mackay* Rockhampton* Townsville* Interstate - as prescribed* Class 5* Capalaba* Interstate - straight tracks* Interstate Tracks: ALBURY 4, ANGLE PARK 1, ANGLEPARK(WED) 2, APPIN 5, ARMIDALE 4, BALLARAT 2,BARMERA 4, BATHURST 4, BENDIGO 2, BROKEN HILL 4,BULLI 2, CANBERRA 2, CANNINGTON 1, CASINO 2,CESSNOCK 2, COONABARABRAN 4, COONAMBLE 3, COWRA4, CRANBOURNE 2, DAPTO 2, DARWIN 2, DEVONPORT 2,DUBBO 3, FORBES 4, GARDENS 2, GAWLER 2, GEELONG 2,GOSFORD 2, GOULBURN 4, GRAFTON 3, GUNNEDAH 4,HEALESVILLE 5, HOBART 1, HORSHAM 2, KEMPSEY 4,KULPARA 4, LAUNCESTON 2, LISMORE 2, LITHGOW 3,MAITLAND 2, MANDURAH 2, MEADOWS 1, MEADOWS(WED) 2, MOREE 3, MOSSVALE 4, MT GAMBIER 4, MUDGEE4, MUSWELLBROOK 4, NORTHAM 3, NOWRA 2, ORANGE 4,PORT AUGUSTA 4, PORT LINCOLN 4, PORT PIRIE 4, POTTSQueenslandGrading SystemPARK 3, RICHMOND 2, ROBINVALE 4, SALE 2, SANDOWN1, SANDOWN (WED) 2, SHEPPARTON 2, SINGLETON 2,STRATHALBYN 3, TAMWORTH 4, TAREE 4, TEMORA 4,TRARALGON 2, TWEED HEADS 3, WAGGA 4, WANGARATTA2, WARRAGUL 2, WARRNAMBOOL 2, WAUCHOPE 4,WENTWORTH PK 1, WENTWORK PK (GOSFORD) 2,WHYALLA 4, WYONG 5, YOUNG 4.International Tracks:All Class 2GRADE OF GREYHOUNDThe classification of the scale of grading of a greyhound shallbe as prescribed by the Authority. As of 1st July 2006, the scale of Grade within Class and Distanceis:* Maiden* 5th Grade* 4th Grade* 3rd Grade* 2nd Grade* 1st GradeGRADING PENALTIESSubject to any prescribed Grading Concessions, and “Grading -Class 4 and 5 Tracks Only”, a greyhound shall be penalised oneGrade for each win in a penalty bearing event including a “walkover”:(a) for the Class and Distance of the track; and(b) for the Class and Distance of any track of a lower Class, providing the penalty, at such track, does not result in the Gradebecoming higher than 3rd Grade. For example: Providing the event is a penalty bearing race, awin at a Class 4 track cannot affect the Grade of a greyhound at aClass 2 & 3 track. Steve Keeplooks over hisnew rearingand educationproperty.Steve's allovera winnerStory and Pictures by DAVID BRASCHWHEN Steve Keep was 14 hisparents had to drop his Christmaspresents in to his grandmother's home.Steve had been living there for fourmonths honing his greyhound racingskills from one of the legends of theindustry on the Northern Rivers, LilaSimpson.Everything Steve did as a youngsterwas centred around greyhound racing, and Lila."Everyone on the Rivers knew Lila,"said Steve. "From the time I was sevenyears old I started helping her with herdogs."By the time he was 14 and had movedin with his grandmother, Steve and Lilawould educate 20 dogs at Joe Cotroneo'strial track just outside Casino beforeSteve even thought about going to school."On Thursdays I would leave schoolat 2pm, go home do the dogs, get intomy Auntie Faye's mini minor and head tothe Gabba to see Lila's dogs racing," hesaid."We might drive up just to see a raceor two and then head straight home. I justloved it with her. I refused to go home."So with a grounding like that is it anywonder Steve Keep is still living hisgreyhound racing dream today. He and Michelle have just establishedGalaxy Dreams a 178-acre rearing, breaking in and training complex justoutside Casino.Steve's giving his passion a go. For thepast 26 years he has been working at theCasino meat works, finishing as foremanof the boning room working from 4.30amto sometimes 5pm, five days a week."I love greyhounds and work wasinterferring with my work with the dogs,"said Steve. "It's scary to quit a secure joblike that and take on greyhounds full time, but the only ones who can make it workare us."Steve was always going to be hooked, despite Lila's influence. The firstgreyhound he owned, albeit in shares, wasFast Wendy and she won 25 races. Stevewas 16."I got my first dog to train not longafter and have been pottering about withthem ever since, generally with only six inwork," he said.Because of the expertise he picked upfrom his grandmother, Steve has beendabbling in greyhound education for a fewyears for selected clients."We concentrate heavily on box work, that's where you win races," he said.Galaxy Dreams is already a showplaceproperty. The Keeps have 15 rearing yards50m x 12.5m with brick kennels in each. The holding yards open to ahuge galloping paddock withdam."We used 58 rolls of chainwire, and there is 48,000bricks in the pup kennels, enough for a two storeyhome," he said."Yes, we are living adream here and within twoyears we want to be amongthe best greyhoundcomplexes in the country."A new kennel block for 18racing dogs is being planned.A kennel block for 24 youngdogs being educated isalready full.Sottie Allover holds prideof place at Galaxy Dreams. Her first litter to TokenPrince is showing plenty ofability including Prince Allover winner offive of his first 10 and a Galaxy hopefulthis year until he hurt himself. The bitch has since had litters to GoWild Teddy and Where's Pedro.Steve and Michelle searched for twoyears for their Dream property."We were about to put a contract on avacant block of land but found this at thelast minute," said Michelle."It's a lot of work running a propertylike this, rearing, breaking in andtraining," said Steve."But don't forget I was doing all thatbefore and working up to 12 hours a dayat the meat works."Steve's great mate Gary Burt helps outregularly. They are all living the dream ... a galaxyof dreams.ON the Sunday of the Tweed Galaxyweekend, Michelle Keep drove toBallina for the yearly psychic expo.Michelle was born on 25-6-66, andwhen she told a psychic that he washorrified. The three sixes is the Devil'snumber and is bad luck when all in arow. The day before, husband Steve hadrun the family's star Sottie Allover inthe heats of the Galaxy. She came out ofbox six and won. For the final, she wouldbe lining up in box six, race six ... theDevil's number again."The psychic told me something bigwas about to happen," she said.Sottie Allover scorched around theTweed to put her name into the Galaxyrecord books. So much for bad luck! The (June, 2006) Journal Page 40
