our newest dreamA LONG AND NARROW STRETCH ofsun-baked roadway is covered with a slickplastic mat, now made even more slipperyby a frothy layer of soapy water Hondatechnicians have splashed across its surface. In the distance, an engine roars tolife and a car begins to accelerate directlytoward the glistening surface. As the car glides onto the treacheroussoap-slick, the driver locks the brakes andcranks the wheel hard. Foam sprays upand out in a watery arch as the tyres cutsideways across the surface and the carspins a full 180 degrees before finallycoming to a stop. The driver, a professional instructorfrom Singapore’s BBDC (Bukit Batok DrivingCentre), steps out of the vehicle andfaces his wide-eyed students, all of whomhad watched the automotive acrobaticsfrom a safe distance. Now it’s the students’ turn to getbehind the wheel and do the same. That was the scene at the HondaSafety Driving Course held at the AsiaPacific Auction Centre in Subang on 20and 21 June.Driving onto a slippery surface at highspeed is something motorists usually dotheir best to avoid. But the 56 participants(27 on the first day and 29 on the second)that took part in this defensive drivingcourse drove straight for the slick in aneffort to learn how to handle the one situationevery driver fears most: losingcontrol of the car.So it’s not surprising that, in this controlledenvironment, the wet brakingexercise was extremely popular withcourse participants, including HondaCR-V driver Chan Lee Sum andher friend Uh Leow Mei.“We like the wet brakingexercise best, followed by06 I with dreamsmaybe the cornering exercise. Overall wefound the course extremely fun and interesting.Honda has definitely created safetyawareness in us,” said Chan as a widegrin spread across her face. The dramatic soap-slick scenario wasbut one of many driving simulationsdesigned to show participants – like husbandand wife team KT Hiew andGertrude Dolly Cox – how a day on theroad can result in catastrophe for motoristslacking essential defensive driving skills.“Normally we wouldn’t be driving in theconditions we see today. We can neverget to take risks like we do here, to get afeel of it without actually being in realdanger, “said Hiew. “We would comeback and do it again.”The parents of a 23-year old daughter, both Hiew and Cox agreed she would bethe next in the family to attend the course. As Cox put it, “She is a hell driver! I thinkit’s a very good course for youngsters.”Created to inform drivers of the varioussafety systems built into their Honda carswhile at the same time teaching them howto be better drivers, the Honda SafetyDriving Course is part of Honda’s GlobalSafety Philosophy.Going further than simply designingand building safer cars, Honda is activelypursuing the development of programmesthat teach motorists correct drivingknow-how and accident prevention techniqueswhile instilling an appreciation ofproper vehicle maintenance. This complete approach represents a keyfactor in Honda’s determined effort to makethe roads a safer place for motorists andpedestrians alike, according to Chief ExecutiveOfficer and Managing Director of HondaMalaysia Sdn Bhd Mr. Atsushi Fujimoto.“As a global manufacturer, Honda iscommitted to safety. Through our globalinitiative Safety for Everyone, we placegreat importance in meeting and surpassingsafety requirements in all our vehicles. We also believe that the driver plays animportant part in ensuring safety in thedriving environment,” said Mr. Fujimoto. The Honda Safety Driving Course wasconducted by Honda Japan-trained safetydriving instructors from the Bukit BatokDriving Centre (BBDC) in Singapore. The programme designed for Malaysia is

our newest dreama more basic version of the one conductedat other Honda facilities on ayear-round basis, but the kind of trainingoffered is still sufficient for drivers to gain ahighly beneficial amount of defensivedrivingknowledge and skills. Two complete courses were held overthe two-day period, and each one-daycourse was split into two distinct parts. The first was a short classroom sessionwhere drivers learn the theories behinddefensive driving, and the second was aseries of practical behind-the-wheellessons taught in the parking lot outside.Unlike some other driving schools,BBDC puts a lot of thought into coursepresentation by using interesting props asillustrative educational materials. And apartfrom slides, real-life video footage of accidentsis also shown to bring home justhow devastating a collision can be. But itwasn’t all doom and gloom.Jonathan Tang, the lead instructorfor the Honda Safety Driving Course, kept the mood upbeat by injectingsome light humour into theotherwise morbid classroomsubject of road accidentsand prevention. But at the end of the day, there’s nothinglike actually sitting behind the wheel tofully understand vehicle dynamics and theapplication of defensive driving theories.Wearing the blue and white uniforms typicalof Honda safety driving instructors, there were enough officials present toensure every course participant receiveddetailed, comprehensive instruction.New techniques and knowledge – likewhere to position hands on a steeringwheel and how to use a foot stabiliser –were revealed at the course, along with acomprehensive breakdown of the conditionsthat can often lead to an accident.By better understanding the relationshipbetween driver and vehicle, it becameeasier for participants to fully comprehendthe many dos and don’ts of driving. But as it turned out, the main culpritbehind most serious accidents had verylittle to do with extreme road conditions.BBDC driving instructors cited a simplelack of driver attention, often for only thebriefest of moments, as a common factorin loss of vehicle control.Fortunately, accidents caused by externalsubstances like alcohol, internalfactors like fatigue or even minor in-cardistractions are all easily preventable, simply by making sure that the driver andvehicle are always well-prepared beforeembarking on any journey. Some defensive driving skillsParticipants interviewed at the Safety Driving Course"Honda has definitely createdsafety awareness in us!"Irwan NurshahChan Lee SumWan Hamirul HafizUh Leow Mei"It makes me understand how todrive safely on the road..."covered at the course went beyondunderstanding Honda’s advanced activesafeguards like Anti-lock Brake System(ABS) and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) byexploring methods and tactics to copewith elements like bad weather and avehicle’s inherent structural dynamics. For the course, Honda Malaysia supplieda variety of models that includedprevious-generation Accords as well ascurrent Civic and City models. All wereequipped with ABS, VSA or both, technologiesthat could be disabled by Hondaassociates to illustrate certain undesirablebraking and cornering scenarios duringthe training. In a safe and controlled environment,BBDC instructors created a low-grip surface– in the popular wet braking exercise– to simulate a real-world scenario of oil orstanding water on the road, which caneasily result in loss of vehicle control dueto severe hydroplaning. First, participantsexperienced what it is like without ABSKT HiewGetrude Dolly Cox"We get a feel of it (taking risks)without actually being in real danger.""The training instructors wereprofessional and very knowledgeable..."Ginger LimPepper Limwith dreams I 07

our newest dreamengaged, and then took a second run onthe same surface to experience the addedcontrol ABS offers. The lesson allowed participants to fullyappreciate the shorter braking distancesand better car control on slippery surfacesafforded by the various Honda safety systems.Although ABS may not provideshorter braking distances, the technologyserves to prevent the front tyres from lockingup so the driver can maintain controland steer clear of obstacles. It’s surprising how much fun learning safety driving can be.City V-TEC owner Wan Hamirul Hafizbin Wan Abdul Hamid said the courseoffered some very useful advice on whatto do in a potentially dangerous situation.“It makes me understand how to drivesafely on the road and control the carwhen bad situations appear,” said Wan,adding that it was “a very good event.”In the cornering tests, participantsexperienced first-hand how ineffectivesteering can be when a driver misjudges acorner and under-steers while entering atexcessive speed. The VSA system interveneswhen it senses any slip in thewheels, reducing vehicle speed to preventloss of control.Wan’s friend Irwan Nurshah bin Shaharuddinsaid the course taught him towatch the road ahead the next time hegets behind the wheel.“Previously, I only knew how to drive acar. But today I found out that it is importantto keep a safe distance between carsand to look ahead,” Irwan said.Pepper Lim, who attended the eventaccompanied by his younger brotherGinger, said he felt he had gained valuableinsight and had increasedconfidence as a Honda driver afterattending the course.“Putting the cars through skids, spinsand other tough manoeuvres, I was totallyimpressed by Honda's control and handling. The engineers have succeeded increating cars that are easy to drive andfitted them with a bunch of totally awesomesafety features,” said Lim. “The traininginstructors were professional, very knowledgeableand able to demonstrate theirpoints clearly.”Other important safe driving practicesparticipants learned included maintainingan ideal driving position and inspectingtheir vehicle regularly. Vital safety equipment, such as the tyres and brakingsystem, need to be maintained in an optimumworking condition at all timesbecause they are crucial safety elements.Upon successful completion of thecourse, all participants received a certificateof participation from BBDC andHonda Malaysia. Based on feedbackgathered at the course, participants foundit not only an eye-opener but also a thoroughlyenjoyable experience – all in thename of learning safer driving habits.Everyone left the Honda Safety DrivingCourse with a lot more than asimple proof of participation anda fun day out. They alsogained the ability to save liveson the road.08 I with dreams

The Theory and the PracticeAt the Honda Safety Driving Course2008, participants experienceddriving, turning and stoppingduring dangerous conditions withthe following six programs.our newest dreamTheory SessionIn the theory session, BBDC driving instructorsexplain the concepts behind defensivedriving, teaching correct driving know-howand accident prevention techniquesby using illustrative educationmaterials such as props andvideo footage.SlalomIn this test of precision, drivers are required tonavigate around plastic cones placed in a straightline. The objective of this exercise is not tocome in with the fastest time, but rather tocomplete the course as smoothly aspossible. It emphasises ideal drivingthrough steering, body postureand timing.Emergency Manoeuvres:Two and Four Second RulesThe Two and Four Second Rules help preparedrivers for an impending danger a few carlengths ahead. Participants are rated on thetime taken to react and the distance takento bring the car to a complete stop.Wet Braking with ABSThis is the art of emergency braking and lanechanging. Participants are shown how tobrake safely on wet asphalt (recreated usinga slick, soapy plastic mat) at speeds of50km/h while immediately swerving toavoid the obstacle cones.Understeering and VSARecreates real-life traffic situation where a drivermisjudges the cornering speed and ends upgoing off the road. Participants see whatcauses understeering, andlearn how the VSA systemcompensates.Wet Braking without ABSViewed by many participants as the mostexciting part of the course, drivers replicatethe previous braking manoeuvre at 50km/h –but this time without ABS assistance. Lossof control is inevitable, and cars canspin a full 180 degrees or more!*Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) controls tyre slip by monitoring the deceleration of individual wheels while braking, then automatically adjusting hydraulic pressure to maintain optimum driver control.*Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control enhances handling on poor traction surfaces by helping drivers maintain control during acceleration, cornering and collision-avoidance manoeuvres. The Honda Safety Driving Course is Conducted by Honda Malaysia, in collaboration withBukit Batok Driving Centre Ltd (BBDC)One of the most advanced driving centres in South East Asia, the Bukit Batok Driving Centre was established on 15April 1988 and officially opened on 6 April 1990. Its aim is to reduce the number of road-related accidents and promoteroad safety by offering motorists comprehensive and unique training programs. Breaking the LawMeet company lawyer G. Vijiarajan, a very busy man whosejob it is to know the exact legal difference between right andwrong… but who on at least one occasion wasn’t sureexactly where it was he’d parked his Honda Accord.10 I with dreams

“When I saw the Honda Accord, I just had to have it.”Vijiarajan is a busy man, but he still finds time to reach out and help those in need.ALL HONDA ACCORDS are tempting, which explains why a 50-year-old lawyerfrom Kuala Lumpur found himself in hotsoup for getting behind the wheel of acar that wasn’t his.Following a quick stop at a bank inTaman Desa, G. Vijiarajan immediatelyentered the nearest gold-colouredHonda Accord. He was shocked to discoveran old lady sitting in the rear seat.“Both of us panicked. She startedhitting me with her umbrella, and I hadn’tthe faintest clue what was going on. Bythe time I got out, a crowd had alreadygathered around us.“The woman started screamingthat I had attempted to steal the car. Itried explaining, but to no avail. Herson then walked over. He didn’t lookpleased, either. If not for my carparked nearby, I think all this wouldhave been history, especially when thearea has been plagued with severalrobberies and snatch thefts of late,”Vijiarajan said.Vijiarajan escaped without harm, thenwrote a letter to With DREAMS magazineabout his experience. While being interviewedfor this article, he cracked a fewjokes saying that it was a little like a dayat the office, with court clerks takingdown every single detail.“I usually ask the questions, being thelawyer. Now you guys are asking me.That’s something different,” he quipped.Hailing from Sungai Ara in Penang,Vijiarajan first pursued his studies inTheology and then had the opportunityto travel.“My research took me to China,Turkey, India and the US, where I learntto mind my own business and live my life.It was a fulfilling job but it didn’t pay well,”he said. While travelling he engaged in socialwork, something he started doing in hisearly youth. One thing led to another andbefore Vijiarajan knew it, his girlfriend atthe time persuadedhim to pursue adegree in Law.NAMEMr. G.VijiarajanjAGE 50HOMEKuala LumpurOCCUPATION LawyerCAR OWNED 7th Generation Honda AccordIt’s been more than 10 years sinceVijiarajan was called to the Bar as anadvocate and solicitor, and he now runshis own successful legal firm and lectureson company law at the Help InternationalCollege of Technology, Klang, while doingsocial work in his spare time.Currently holding a Master’s Degree inLaw (LLM), Vijiarajan continues to pursuelegal studies and is currently writing adoctorate thesis on company law.“After I complete my PhD, I plan tocontinue lecturing as it will equip mewith additional skills and knowledge inmy legal practice. Having a PhD will certainlyhelp things in courtrooms,” hesaid, adding that he also plans to writeand publish a book on company lawspecifically tailored for the Malaysianlegal system. But for Vijiarajan, personal responsibilityis no less important than the lawsthat govern business. Among the socialwork he has done includes helping thevictims in Banda Aceh after the 2004Tsunami swept across Southeast Asia.“Upon arriving in Banda Aceh, I feltlike it was all a dream. I saw a boat restingon a house. It was bad. It was onlythen that I realised life is so uncertain,” hesaid, describing the suffering and loss oflife. “Everything can be rosy and perfect…but it could change tremendouslyin a few days. Nobody can predict whatis going to happen.”An easy person to talk to, Vijiarajansays he’s simple, loves the finer things inlife and enjoys discovering new things. He’s also extremely straightforward andcomfortable with his bachelorhood, sayinghe’s had a few romantic interests butnothing really went any further than that.WHY HE’S HEREMr. G. “I travel a lot out of the city, both for work and to visit my mother…so I need a car with good fuel consumption and comfort.”After a stressful morning at the office I went to the banknear our office, parked my golden Honda Accord andwent into the bank to do some transactions.I am a lawyer and our law firm is just aroundthe corner. About 20 minutes later, I came outside to mygolden-coloured Honda, opened the door and sat in my Honda. Tomy shock, there was an old lady sitting behind who started yelling “Curikereta! Curi kereta!” Next thing I remember, I was whacked by the old lady’sumbrellanon-stop on the head. Shocked and frightened, I scrambled out of thecar immediately thinking that a mentally unstable person had somehow sneakedinto my car. The old lady too got out and continued screaming wildly, “Banyakjahat! Curi kereta!”A crowd immediately gathered around me looking menacingly at me. Withinseconds, a big-sized Chinese gentleman rushed to the scene and looked fiercely atme. I guess he didn’t whack me because I was neatly attired in black and whitelawyer’s grab. Thank God a police patrol arrived too within seconds at the scene. When the police asked what I was doing in someone else’s car, I said, “This is mycar.” “Apa nombor kereta, encik?” the police queried. I said, “WMP7773.” Thepoliceman checked the number and said, “Nombor kereta ini lain-lah, encik. Inibukan kereta awak! Salah masuk kereta.” To my shock, I realised that I hadgot into the wrong car by mistake. I explained to the car owner andpolice that I had made a terrible mistake and sincerelyapologised. They only believed my story when we walked to mycar less than 20 feet away and there it was, my belovedgold-coloured Honda WMP7773.Little did I ever imagine that one day I would get whacked byan umbrella because of a Honda. The moral of the story? Whenreturning to your car, please double check if there is more thanone Honda near your car – because all Honda’s look tempting tingto get into! (And not all old ladies are weak. Some can reallywhack, especially with an umbrella. The pain lastedalmost two weeks!!!)With the orang asli.“I can be a jerk sometimes, I admit. But what to do? That’s life,” he said.In his free time, if he isn’t lecturing orteaching tuition, he can often be foundvisiting orang asli villages.“The orang asli live in a hassle andstress-free environment. They can marryas many wives as they want and so theyhave many children, which is becoming aproblem,” he said with a cheeky smile.“Sometimes it makes me wonderabout the kind of world we live in, especiallyin the city where everybody is ateach other’s necks,” he said. “Just takethe LRT and you see the tense faces.”After owning a Proton for many years,Vijiarajan wanted a car that would be farmore comfortable.“When I saw the Honda Accord, I justhadto have it. It looked good, was comfortableand enjoyable to drive. I travel a lotout of the city, both for work and to visitmy mother in Penang, so I need a car withgood fuel consumption and comfort.“Ever since I got it, it has served mewell. It hardly gives any problems andmaintenance is quite minimal, whichmakes the ownership experience evenbetter,” he said.Vijiarajan purchased his Accord fromPeringgit Sri Motor on Old Klang Road in2004. “Don’t getme wrong. It’snot that I’m inlove with anybody here,”he said. “It is just convenient for me.They are very professional over here (and)they carry out their work swiftly.”While waiting for his car maintenanceto be completed, Vijiarajan usually readslaw books – or teaches others at thedealership a thing or two about numerology.Another favourite pastime ishaving a few glasses of whiskey at hispreferred haunt, a place called M Bar inJalan Ampang.“It’s quiet and the DJ plays lightmusic. I don’t have many friends, andso I usually just hang out with the few Ihave or just (sit) by myself. It’s a goodtime-off from the hustle and bustle ofcity life,” he said.Behind the WheelVijiarajan enjoys the friendly assistance of Sales Manager Mr. Bernard Lim.What was your reason for choosing aHonda? It was probably something to do withmy ego at the time. I just had to have aHonda. It was always a brand that Irespected very much. And what was the most importantreason for purchasing the HondaAccord? The Accord was said to be a comfortablesedan. It has lots of space and issmooth on the highways. As a lawyerwho travels to the northern and southernstates often, I needed an executivecar that could handle my requirements. How would you describe the experienceof driving your Honda Accord?I enjoy driving it. The experience ismade even better as I play my SantanaCD. Both make a perfect combination.Have you encouraged anyone else topurchase a Honda Accord? Not really. I may have mentioned its pluspoints to some but I don’t have time tocheck and see if they did buy it. Anyway, most people already know whatHondas are capable of.What do you like about your dealer,Peringgit Sri Motor? They are very professional in their work.Everything is very orderly and swift. Theyare also friendly and try and solveproblems without hassle. It is convenientfor me, as I live merely a few kilometresfrom it and my office is near, so I cansend my car for service even during myworking hours. Why did Honda – a company known for cars, motorcycles and power products – create a humanoid robot inthe first place?Honda developed ASIMO in an effort to create a viable mobilitythat allows robots to be more helpful and live in perfectharmony with humans. That was the original concept. For themost part, though, it was also our belief in the power of dreams. And that’s why, way back in 1986, Honda started the projectto develop a two-legged walking robot.Following an evolution that includes 10 groundbreaking generationsspread over 14 long years of meticulous research anddevelopment, the year 2000 saw the birth of the first walking robotto bear the name “ASIMO.” But development didn’t stop there. The robot you see today is the all-new ASIMO, a secondgenerationmodel introduced on 15 December 2004 with a runningspeed of 3km/h and more advanced intelligence technologies forgreater autonomy and improved ASIMO-human interaction. Now ASIMO moves more smoothly than ever before, weavingin and out of common daily situations with a fluidity that is surprisinglyhuman. This fact becomes very evident once ASIMO isplaced in the average bustling office, where technologies likePredictive Movement Control and i-walk Intelligent Real TimeFlexible Walking provide an entirely new level of practical functionality– enabling ASIMO version 2 to turn without stopping andmove more smoothly with a natural walking speed of 2.7km/h.When walking down a crowded corridor ASIMO can stepback to yield the right-of-way or continue along its path, makingnear-instantaneous decisions as information is gathered via anintegrated eye camera and the predicted movements of surroundingpeople are calculated.ASIMO also boasts advanced hearing capabilities, and whenan object falls – even behind the robot – ASIMO is able to hearthe sound and locate the object based on that audio information. And while seeing and hearing are things humans do all thetime, they are certainly significant firsts for a robot. But that’sjust the beginning.Given the right advances in technology, there’s absolutely noreason why ASIMO couldn’t perform nearly any role – whichwould prove especially helpful with important tasks that couldbe dangerous for a human to perform.ASIMO’s brain-like intelligence means it can actually experienceand learn from its surroundings, an essential requirementfor true assimilation into society. So look forward to ASIMO version 2.5, designed to easilyperform common clerical tasks like carrying trays and pushingcarts. When it’s time for a quick boost, the new ASIMO canautomatically replenish its own battery – while standing – simplyby backing into a nearby charging station whenever necessary. When two or more ASIMO version 2.5s work together, informationregarding the current status of each unit is continuallycommunicated via wireless LAN to ensure optimum work efficiencyby sharing tasks in the most effective manner.Every ASIMO version 2.5’s current position relative to thelocation of each task is noted, as battery levels are registeredand the most time efficient way to share the various tasks isdetermined. Then each one goes to work on its own portion ofthe job at hand. Now that’s teamwork!with dreams I 15

motor sportsThe ChallengingSpirit ContinuesHonda Malaysia’s 2008 Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) campaign sped off to agreat start with strong enthusiasm, much excitement and a rejuvenated spirit. Find outhow the team fared, and see what goes into preparing for Asia’s biggest endurance race.IN MOTORSPORTS, most dream aboutcrossing the finishing line first. But for theHonda Malaysia Racing Team (HMRT), thereis more to the dream than just winning. It is about having what it takes to winthe race – cooperative teamwork, mutualunderstanding, and the ability to challengeoneself and go beyond one’s limits.Honda calls this the Challenging Spirit. And what better place to put this spiritto the test than at the gruelling 12-hourMerdeka Millennium Endurance (MME)race, held yearly at the Sepang InternationalCircuit. The most recent edition ofthe race, which took place from 28 Augustto 30 August 2008, saw the HMRT field itsfirst all-Malaysian squad in history.“Even though we did not win the ClassA championship this year, I am proud ofthe whole team and the way they rose tothe challenge. And I want to say to them:well done! MME 2008 goes down inhistory as the year that HMRT becamefully independent,” said Managing Directorand Chief Executive Officer for Honda Malaysiaand Team Principle Atsushi Fujimoto.Fujimoto added, “Everyone in HMRTdisplayed the challenging spirit and it is amilestone for HMRT because this year weare a 100 per cent Malaysian team. Fromthe HMRT members responsible for buildingthe race cars with guidance from seniormembers of the team, to the six drivers forboth race cars – they are all Malaysians, and this truly demonstrates the MerdekaSpirit. I am glad to say we have achievedour objective this year which is TowardsRealisation of Local Competency.”But being an all-local team isn’t theonly amazing fact about the HMRT. Fromthe team’s swift pit stop performanceduring race time, you would never haveguessed that they are made up entirely ofeveryday technicians and associates fromHonda Malaysia’s assembly plant in AlorGajah, Malacca, and the corporate officein Petaling Jaya. Thanks to the unwavering dedicationof its team members who spend countlesshours after work in preparation for therace, the HMRT is recognised as one ofthe most efficient race outfits in the MME.In fact, Honda’s preparations for thisyear’s race had already shifted into highgear as early as 2 June 2008, following akick-off ceremony that was held at itsassembly plant.16 I with dreams

motor sportsBeginning with a boosted memberstrength, from 30 to 40, the newlyexpanded HMRT is comprised of 33 newcomersand seven members from the2007 squad. Returning members not onlyhad the opportunity to build on pastachievements, but the wealth of knowledgeand experience that they shared withthe rest of the team also proved invaluable. This year’s MME campaign also sawHonda Malaysia expand its line-up of racedrivers to six participants. Two new drivers– 24-year-old Victor Cheong and associateturned first-time MME driver,35-year-old Faisal Asri – joined familiarfaces Eddie Lew Kar Wai, Rueben Wong,Fahrizal Hasan and Aaron Lim.Citing the benefits of having Honda’sassociates participate in the MME, Fujimotoexplained, “We encourage ourassociates to compete at the highest levelin local endurance races as the challengeenables them to improve their skills. Hamid, who prepares a daily workschedule at the start of the day andabides by it – a habit he had picked upworking with HMRT.Another significant change for theHMRT this year was the fielding of twoidentical Honda Civic 2.0 i-VTEC race carsfor the competition. Both Car 26 and Car27 shared the same engine, gearbox, suspension, brake system and tyres – evenright down to the car’s race livery.“Car 27 only needed to be maintainedthroughout while Car 26 needed somework, requiring a paint job, new tyres, suspensionand even a new brake system,”said Thayalakumaran, HMRT Engine Engineerand an avid motorsports fan.A 30-minute pre-Shakedown was firstorganised on 15 June 2008 at the testCar 27Eddie Lew Kar WaiDate teofBithBirth: 8 May 1973Birthplace:Johor BahruAaron LimDate of Birth: 22 June 1985Birthplace:Petaling JayaVictor CheongDate of Birth: 9 October 1984Birthplace:Kuala Lumpurtrack of the Honda Malaysia plant. By the last Shakedown on18 August 2008, the entire team was afinely tuned machine – working togetherlike it was second nature. While it is unfortunate that the HMRTwas unsuccessful in retaining its Class Atitle for the sixth consecutive time, the spiritof teamwork, perseverance and the nurturingof local talent will always remainparamount – not just for this year, but foryears to come. Because like SoichiroHonda once said, “Success is 99 per centfailure.” The challenge for Honda continues…CAR MECHANICSEngine EngineerThayalakumaran described theMME as a great experience, despite having to work extra hardto get the race cars ready.Chief Mechanic(Car 26)Shamsul Bin Hassan said thisexperience can also be used tocontinually improve on dailytasks in the production line.Chief Mechanic(Car 27)Irwan Ab. All-New JazzFor anyone out there who thinks that there’s no such thing asa compact car that’s spacious, fuel-efficient and a whole lot offun to drive: prepare to meet the All-New Jazz.THE SPORTY LITTLE HONDA JAZZ, also known as the Fit in someparts of the world, was first introduced in June 2001 to an enthusiasticJapanese market. But its popularity was soon to extend far beyondJapan’s shores, and it wasn’t long before the stylishly peppy Jazz would beseen on streets around the world.Just two years later, in mid-2003, the first-generation Honda Jazz hadalready made its way successfully onto Southeast Asian roads. Here inMalaysia, buying the Jazz first meant a choice between 1.5L i-DSI andVTEC variants. Whichever engine drivers chose, they enjoyed an easy-touseautomatic transmission and the responsive control of front-wheel drive. One reason for the previous-generation Jazz’s instant appeal may be thefact that it easily met the needs of daily urban commuters. Its compactagility made for easy manoeuvring in and out of traffic snarls, while the interiorcould instantly be converted into a spacious cargo area when necessary. And its sprightly performance, comprehensive safety features andeasy-driving nature meant the Honda Jazz gave motorists the necessaryconfidence to drive out of city traffic and onto the open highways – justperfect for quick jaunts back to the kampung.Early 2006 saw the Honda Jazz receive a purely cosmetic update, anda car that was previously getting lots of positive attention now looked evenbetter. For the next two years, the Honda Jazz continued to win enthusiasticfans across the country.Internationally, the awards for this impressive car beganto accumulate: Japan Car of the Year 2001-2002 and2007-2008, Car and Driver’s Best Small Car2007 and 2008, Top Gear Survey 2006Best Small Car, and MotorweekDriver’s Choice Awards 2007Best Small Car and Best of theYear, just to name a fewaccolades earned.18 I with dreams
