The Las Vegas Raiders had one of the best defenses in the National Football League this season, especially down the stretch. Once Coach Antonio Pierce took over, the Raiders' defense developed into one of the best defenses in the league by many metrics.

Pierce and Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham guided Las Vegas' defense to unexpected new heights. They took one of the lowest-paid defenses in the National Football League and got the most out of them.

The Raiders have one of the youngest defensive backfields in the NFL, an unproductive defensive end position on the other end of Maxx Crosby, and an underestimated linebacker unit. They turned them into a unit good enough to shut down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in a convincing fashion.

While the Raiders' defense certainly improved, the chances of the unit playing equally as well next season without adding talent is unlikely.  Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda believes the Raiders could be in the running for one of their arch-rival's best defensive players, L'Jarius Sneed.

“There was talk during Senior Bowl week that Kansas City could place the franchise tag on Sneed this offseason, a move that is projected to cost around $19 million,” Pauline said.

“If he hits the open market, expectations are that Sneed will sign a long-term contract that averages around $18.5 million annually, just under the tag amount. If the Chiefs can’t sign Sneed in the offseason, where could he land? Keep an eye on the Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, and Las Vegas Raiders.”

The Raiders could need a cornerback, especially if veteran cornerback Amik Robertson leaves the team in free agency. However, even if he returns, the Raiders could still consider adding Sneed to their roster.

Signing Sneed would help the Raiders in more ways than one. Adding Sneed to their roster would instantly improve an already talented defensive backfield. It would also hurt their biggest rival tremendously.

From February 27 to March 4, 2024, the NFL Scouting Combine will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
