LIFE-SIZE AKIRA BIKE - Bel&Bel Creating The Cult Classic Dream

Written by Gill Princen

Bel&Bel, a Creative Studio founded in 2005 by Jesús Bel and Carles Bel, is making waves with its latest project: a fully functional replica of Kaneda's iconic motorcycle from the legendary anime Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo. This ambitious endeavor, dubbed the "Moto Akira project," represents a seamless fusion of retro aesthetics and cutting-edge technology, bringing to life a beloved piece of fiction.

The journey towards creating this masterpiece began with Bel&Bel's earlier successes, particularly their recreation of the Dragon Ball motorcycles by Akira Toriyama. Inspired by the positive reception from enthusiasts, the team set their sights on bringing Kaneda's motorcycle to life. They explain,, "The monowheel from Lunch and Bulma's Capsule 9 motorcycle, appearing in the early '90s episodes, left a strong impression on us in our youth. After a positive response from the audience to these creations, we decided to build Kaneda's motorcycle from the famous anime 'Akira'."

Constructing such an intricate replica presented its fair share of challenges, but Bel&Bel approached the task with enthusiasm and dedication. Utilizing a combination of existing parts, custom-crafted components, and meticulous handiwork, the team painstakingly brought the prototype to fruition in their workshop-studio. This process not only demanded technical expertise but also a deep appreciation for the source material and a commitment to authenticity.

The materials used in the construction are as diverse as they are robust. The chassis and body covers primarily consist of metal, while fiberglass and carbon fiber enhance the structural integrity. Incorporating electrical components and LED lights further accentuates the futuristic aesthetic, staying true to the original design's essence.

In terms of specifications, the Moto Akira prototype is a hybrid marvel, featuring a Yamaha 250 c.c motor in the rear wheel and a 1000w electric hub motor in the front wheel. However, the team is already looking ahead to a fully electric model, boasting a formidable 5000w 72v motor.

One of the standout features of the Moto Akira is its attention to detail. From the integrated digital panel displaying all lights and controls to the rear and front air suspension systems, every element is meticulously crafted to evoke the spirit of Kaneda's motorcycle. Perimeter LED lights, a front pop-up light, and Moto GP slick tires further enhance its visual appeal and performance capabilities.

Despite its undeniable allure, acquiring a Moto Akira comes with a price tag reflecting its craftsmanship and exclusivity. Bel&Bel offer the replica on a made-to-order basis, with the limited fully electric series priced at 24,000 euros. For those eager to secure their own piece of anime-inspired engineering, a down payment of 5,000 euros initiates the production process, with the remaining balance payable in installments throughout the year.

As the Moto Akira project continues to garner attention and acclaim, Bel&Bel express gratitude for the overwhelming support received from enthusiasts and media alike. With plans to commence production on the new series in 2024, the studio invites fans to follow the journey on their Instagram page, where glimpses of the construction process and other artistic endeavors are shared.

Bel&Bel's Moto Akira project stands as a testament to the boundless creativity and innovation within the realm of automotive artistry. By blending nostalgia with modern technology, the team has crafted a functional masterpiece that pays homage to a cultural icon while pushing the boundaries of design and engineering. For aficionados of anime, retro aesthetics, and cutting-edge craftsmanship, the Moto Akira represents the ultimate fusion of form and function.
