Sofía Vergara is in her 50s and entering a new chapter in her life since divorcing Joe Manganiello after seven years of marriage. They amicably went their separate ways, and the Modern Family star is now thriving in this season of life.

At 52, this unexpected twist of events might not be exactly how she planned her life, but Vergara is relishing in the privilege of this decade. “I have to be honest with you, I thought [52] was old [when I was younger] like that’s it,” she admitted to People in their Beautiful Issue. “And now I feel great.” While noting that she doesn’t “look the same” as she did in her 20s, Vergara revealed the one thing she’s not going to do in her 50s — and it has everything to do with her hair color.

“I don’t think I am going to ever be the woman that has the courage to be, like, all-white hair,” she said. And that’s OK! Vergara isn’t the only woman to recently divulge that gray hair isn’t for them. Kelly Ripa also shared that even though it takes “hours and hours” to cover her gray strands, she doesn’t think it’s the right move for her. “It’s not like a gorgeous silver or a pretty white. It’s almost like, translucent,” she told her husband Mark Consuelos on a recent episode of Live With Kelly and Mark. “It’s almost translucent in its quality, which I think is weird. It’s almost like colorless hair.”

On the flip side, other actresses are embracing their natural silver locks and have chucked the box of hair dye away for good. Andie MacDowell reassessed her hair situation during the pandemic and decided that going gray was not only right for her physically, but also emotionally. “During COVID, I could see the roots with my face and with my skin and my eyes, and I liked it,” she told People in 2022. “I felt that I would be happier. And I am happier. I really like it.”

Embracing the choice to go gray or continue dying your hair isn’t up for debate because it’s all about an individual’s choice and how their tresses make them feel. Vergara is going to stick to the status quo with her hair color and her shiny, long locks. “I always say, ‘Oh, I’m going to cut my hair.’ But then I end up not cutting it. In Latin America, I mean they used to tell you that once you hit 40, you’re not supposed to have this crazy long hair,” she added. “So I’m always thinking like, ‘Is it time? Is it time to cut it?’ I don’t know, I don’t want to feel like old-fashioned [with] short hair.”
