Relationships require a lot of patience, compromise, and understanding. Julianne Moore knows that very well after 20 years of marriage to Bart Freundlich. The May December actress opened up in a new interview about her relationship and personal life, revealing some very thoughtful insight we didn’t expect to receive.

In her recent profile with Harper’s Bazaar, Moore revealed the “one thing” she and her husband do — or rather don’t do — to ensure their marriage remains as strong as ever. “One thing is not to spend too much time apart,” she told the outlet. “You cannot be intimately involved in somebody else’s life if you are not there,” she said.

“The same way that you can’t parent someone if you’re not there: you know you have to be present. We love to be at home. We love family time with our kids, with each other and our dog, and we love to watch movies together and cook and eat together,” Moore shared. The actress also revealed how “grateful” she is for her romantic partnership with Freundlich and the life they’ve built together of more than two decades.

“I feel grateful I have a relationship that’s as rewarding as it is, because it’s something I really wanted to have,” she said. Moore and Freundlich met on the set of The Myth of Fingerprints, in which Moore acted and Freundlich served as director and screenwriter, back in 1996. Roughly one year later, the couple welcomed their son Caleb. Their daughter Liv was born in 2002, about one year before the couple tied the knot in August 2003.

Moore has always been very thoughtful when it comes to what she publicly discloses about her family. But this new insight into her marriage really gives us a lot to think about. We’re just glad she felt comfortable enough to share this part of her life with us.
