BERKELEY, CA (RNN) - The city council of a notoriously liberal California town will soon vote on whether to allow women to go topless on public streets.
Berkeley, long a bastion of the progressive movement, has heard protests of women who say it is not right for men to be allowed to go topless while women are required to wear shirts.
City Councilman Kriss Worthington heard their message that gender nudity laws should be equalized.
“I just don’t think Berkeley should be defining women are not allowed and men are allowed,” he said to an ABC reporter.
Private businesses would still have the right to refuse service to people who are not wearing shirts – or shoes.
The vote is scheduled for Sept. 12.
