AppleThe Beatles haven't been much for the digital music revolution -- you can't buy their songs on iTunes, let alone Rock Band. Could at least one of those be set to change?

Apple Corps, the company that oversees the legendary band's affairs, said Wednesday morning that it would announce an "unprecedented global music project" in partnership with MTV via a conference call tomorrow.

It would, of course, be jumping to conclusions to suggest that this announcement is going to be Rock Band: Drive My Car Edition. But let's indulge ourselves just a bit.

  • Earlier this year, the Financial Times reported that Apple was in talks with both Activision and Harmonix over the creation of a "Beatles-themed video game."
  • On the conference call tomorrow is Van Toffler, president of the MTV Networks Music/Logo Group, which includes Harmonix. Toffler was the MTV exec the company put me in touch with for our big *Rock Band *story.
  • If this announcement doesn't have anything to do with videogames, why did MTV invite me?

Either way, whether or not this ends up having anything to do with Rock Band, the partnership of MTV and Apple on an "unprecedented," "exclusive" project would surely have some kind of positive effect on Harmonix's ability to get Beatles songs and perhaps Activision's lack thereof.

Update: A helpful comment-leaver points out that the Wall Street Journal is just running with the Beatles-on-Rock-Band story based on "several" unnamed sources. Well, then!
