So I really want to have wedding cupcakes. Color theme is red and blue with a touch of gold and I've seen beautiful cupcake towers with these colors and I'm a fan. I believe cupcakes are a lot cleaner, easy to share, and same portion for everyone. But I feel like they will be more pricy since the baker would have to focus on a # of individual cupcakes and I don't know how popular they are for weddings. Has anyone tried cupcakes and/or what do you guys think of the idea?

There are some stunning cupcake display options! My brother and his wife had a small cake with cupcake tiers below. Theirs were red, black and white and looked very elegant. We are doing a dessert table with a 2 tier traditional cake, and will have gluten-free cupcakes and macarons on each side of it.

I'm new here, but my plan is to do cupcakes. We are super laid back and cutting a cake just seems too elegant to me.

They are much harder to eat than cake, IMO.

We are doing a four tier naked cake. What other occasion in your life can you get a cake as a centerpiece of an event? That was my thought anyway!

It's a great idea. If you like it, go for it. It is your wedding after all. Nothingbundtcakes.com has amazing flavors and each "bundtini" (cupcake) has it's own decorative liner.

We're doing a cake. I hate the thought of making my guest eat with their hands. I can have cupcakes any day of the year but a wedding cake is once in a lifetime.

I would definitely advise against colored icing though. Red, green, or blue icing is going to stain peoples teeth.

Cupcakes gives you more flexibility. You can have some at each table, doubling as centerpieces. You can have several different flavors. Cupcakes will usually be cheaper than a tiered cake but more expensive than a sheet cake. They also give you less control over sizes, since you can't have half sized ones for kids or adults who don't want a full cupcake.

We went the cupcake route. Our baker was about $3 per cupcake. I don't know what their cake slices cost.

We have about 2 cupcakes per person. You need to have at least 1pp.

Blue icing might dye people's mouth, so I would pass on that.

I've never had cupcakes at a child's bday party, so I don't get that feeling from them. It's always been actual cake at these parties.

I typically eat cupcakes with a fork on a plate, so I don't think they are necessarily harder to eat than cake, unless the tools aren't there.

I love the cupcake idea and would have done it if the venue didn't supply a cake already.

If you're doing cupcakes, you need at least 1.5-2/per person, especially if you have multiple flavors.

We did cupcakes for ours and everyone loved them. We ended up being able to do a variety so guests got options.

Not much of a fan of cupcake. The icing to cake is a bit off and I like cakes more.

In the last 5 years I have only been to one wedding that had a cake, otherwise all cupcakes we are doing cupcakes and we have 5 different flavors. I would not recommend the blue icing though, generally the darker the icing the more it will stain your lips/teeth

I'm having a small 2 tier cake and cupcakes! Our cupcakes will not be color coordinated, I'm not a fan of tons of food coloring. Cupcakes can save you money if the venue charges a cutting fee, otherwise they are about the same as cake.

First, I'm going to say I love cupcakes, they're delicious. However, I don't like them for anything but the most informal of weddings. I wouldn't want guests who are all dressed up have to eat with their hands, which is my big objection to cupcakes at weddings. We're doing a three tier cake with sheet cake in the kitchen for our (expected guest count of) 250 guests. Cupcakes would have been significantly more expensive because sheet cake was like $1.00 cheaper per slice than cake/cupcakes. (Our caterer cuts the cake for free/included.)

Also, if the venue is cutting the cake for you, everyone will get the same sized piece.

I'm a baker and having cupcakes for my wedding to have 5 flavors so everyone will hopefully find something they like. I'm not making my own but I don't want boring vanilla cake vanilla frosting :p

I'm not a huge fan of cupcakes unless they are bite size. They are messy which makes them difficult to eat, especially when you're wearing a nice suit or dress and have your makeup done. They get crumbs all over and the frosting tends to be uncooperative when taking a bite. Cupcakes look cute and they taste good but practicality favors cake since it is just plain easier to eat. Our quote for a cupcake tower was a lot more than our wedding cake PLUS cookies AND bite size cupcakes combined cost.
