The clock, manufactured in Birmingham England by W.D. Evans and Sons arrived 2 years after the post office was completed in 1914. The clock tower is 6 stories high while the main building is four stories. There are four 3 metre-high white clock faces. For years a large hand crank was used every 48 to 60 hours to wind the mechanism but nowadays the winding is done electrically.
Like Big Ben there were chimes but when a fancy hotel grew up across the street in the 1920s there was a human cry for silence and they have now disappeared.
