The dam in Iraq may literally be about to burst. Sunni radicals from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant are closing in on the country’s second-largest dam. Officials fear that the terrorist army will use it as a weapon, so they’re preparing to pre-emptively open the flood gates — on them.
Army officials have told employees at the Haditha Dam that they may need to release the floodgates. The large structure sits on the Euphrates River just over 100 miles northwest of Baghdad.
“This will lead to the flooding of the town and villages and will harm you also,” an employee told an Iraqi officer, the New York Times reported Wednesday.
The employee, who asked not to be named by the Times, said the officer replied: “Yes, I know, it will be against us and our enemies.”
Iraq’s largest dam is the Mosul Dam on the Tigris River, which sits roughly 45 miles north of Mosul, the Times reported.
