It has been 13 years since the release of James Cameron’s Avatar. So, for the London premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water, it’s only natural that star Zoe Saldana would be eager to make waves in more ways than one. So, to create a worthy mane moment, hairstylist Mara Roszak looked to the actor’s diaphanous Alexander McQueen dress.

“It was very airy, light, and romantic,” says Roszak, who prepper Saldana’s lengths with her own RŌZ Santa Lucia Styling Oil before rough drying and creating waves with a 1-inch curling iron. “We wanted to mimic some of that with the hair look. It ended up being very film noir but with a modern twist to keep it fresh.” To finish what Roszak calls “an ethereal and feminine take on deconstructed classic waves,” the hairstylist set the curls with pins and a spritz of Leonor Greyl Voluforme Hair Spray, a touch of RŌZ Willow Glen Treatment Oil (the product was applied to Saldana’s body, as well) offering additional, though subtle, shine. “Zoe has the most amazing luxurious hair, which I focused on emphasizing with the soft, cascading waves,” she says.

Makeup artist Vera Steimberg kept both Saldana’s dress and the evening’s blue carpet in mind when creating her makeup story, opting for fresh, bright skin paired with a soft smokey eye. A blend of nudes from Pat McGrath and Lisa Eldridge Liquid Lurex Eyeshadow in “Liza” and “Zora” provided the smoke, structured with a pull of Victoria Beckham Beauty Satin Kajal Liner.

The result was a study in ease and elegance—a look worthy of an evening nearly two decades in the making.
