Year after year—without fail—as soon as the weather turns cold, we're practically compelled to watch Love Story. For us, fall is synonymous with director **Arthur Hiller'**s 1970 romance. Ali MacGraw plays smart, spunky Radcliffe College coed Jennifer Cavalleri. She's the daughter of a baker and from the wrong side of the tracks, but that doesn't stop her from catching the eye of blue-blooded Harvard jock Oliver Barrett IV (Ryan O'Neal). The new couple flirts all over campus—it's almost hard to keep up with the witty banter and "verbal volleyball"—and frolics in the snow in Harvard Yard for a musical sequence. They quickly fall head over heels, get hitched (much to Oliver's father's dismay), and set up house. Things turn south, though, when Jennifer can't get pregnant and they discover she's terminally ill. We won't reveal much more, but what transpires is heart-wrenching and quote-worthy ("I love not only you, but also your name and your numeral" and "Love means never having to say you're sorry" are two of our oft-referenced all-time favorites.)

The movie's a tearjerker, but well-worth the watch because MacGraw and O'Neal's onscreen chemistry makes the grade—and so does the fashion. Costume designers Pearl Somner and Alice Manougian Martin practically defined preppy back-to-school style with this film. The clothes ring true and are so iconic that the classic, timeless pieces MacGraw's character wears continue to inspire designers today (see Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs's fall 2014 collections). Her sweater-weather ready-knits, camel coats, leather gloves, and chic hats are the building blocks for the perfect cold-weather wardrobe. So here, to commemorate the first day of fall, we show you how to dress the part.
