Check out what Condoleezza Rice has been working on for four years

More than four years ago, former secretary of State Condoleezza Rice began writing Democracy: Stories from the Long Road to Freedom, about the challenges to democracy, especially in nations that only recently have moved toward free elections. The book hits the shelves Tuesday, arriving in the wake of the unexpected passage of Brexit in Great Britain and the surprise election of Donald Trump. The 486-page book is at its core a push-back to the America First ideology advocated by candidate Trump. Rice cautioned that "the president's words matter" when asked about some of Trump's controversial statements in an interview with USA TODAY,  but suggested that the president is successfully learning on the job.

U.S. ties on the line in South Korea's presidential election

South Koreans will elect a new president Tuesday as relations with the U.S. — a vital ally — hang in the balance. Human rights lawyer Moon Jae-in, 64, of the left-leaning Democratic Party of Korea leads polls by a large margin over conservative Hong Joon-pyo in an election that was triggered by the impeachment of former president Park Geun-hye on corruption charges. Moon has been critical of the U.S. deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea and has taken a softer stance than Park toward North Korea — positions that could cause a rift with the U.S. and President Trump.

Frat member gets day in court after PSU student's death

A fraternity member is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in connection with the February death of a Penn State University student. Ryan McCann is among 18 fraternity members facing charges after Timothy Piazza, a Beta Theta Pi pledge, fell face-first down a basement stairway Feb. 2 following a hazing ritual that involved the mass consumption of alcohol, according to the Centre County District Attorney. McCann reportedly told a 911 dispatcher that “we have a friend who’s unconscious” as he summoned help nearly 12 hours after Piazza fell.  Authorities say members of the fraternity resisted efforts to call for help, and may have made Piazza's injuries worse. He died Feb. 4 of spleen and brain stem damage.

Derby champ Always Dreaming hits the trail for the Preakness

Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming travels from Louisville to Baltimore on Tuesday in preparation for the Preakness. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Always Dreaming is likely to be the heavy favorite for the May 20 race and will try to become the fifth horse in the last 10 years to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Meanwhile, the collision coming out of the gate at the Derby left the Preakness field up in the air: McCracken is out with a leg cut and Irish War Cry appeared doubtful. Fourth-place finisher Classic Empire was listed as possible.

Is Amazon readying a new Echo? Rumors say one is coming soon

Alexa may be getting a new body Tuesday, or so says a new report from The Wall Street Journal. According to the latest rumors, Amazon will be updating its Echo line with a new device that will add a 7-inch touchscreen and camera for video calling. The new Echo would cost "more than $200" and be available as soon as next month. With growing competition from Google and Microsoft, Amazon will need a new device to help keep its early lead in the smart speaker wars. In its latest report, research firm eMarketer says the retail giant has a 70% share of the market, but Google's Home has been catching up, capturing 24% since it went on sale late last year.

Amazon's Alexa will call Kevin's getaway car.
