Jason Castro out for the season

Turns out Castro’s meniscus was more than just a little torn.

Remember a few weeks ago when the Twins placed Jason Castro on the 10-day DL with a torn meniscus? And they told us it was “not considered a major injury”? And then it turned out Castro actually did need surgery, but would be back in four to six weeks?

Yeah. Well, now Castro is going to miss the rest of the season.

When doctors finally opened up Castro’s knee on Tuesday, they discovered his injury was much worse than the MRI originally revealed. According to Mike Berardino, the doctors made a mid-surgery decision to do a full repair of the meniscus in order to a avoid a “bone-on-bone” situation in the future. Yikes! Hence, Castro won’t play again until 2019.

Or I guess, hopefully again in 2019?

Considering all the things the Twins have said about Castro’s injury up to this point, that actually does not make me feel optimistic.

Though Castro was only hitting .143/.257/.238 over 74 plate appearances this season, his game-calling and pitch-framing skills will be missed. As of now, the plan is apparently for the team to continue on with Mitch Garver and Bobby Wilson behind the plate. I presume Garver will get the majority of the time despite Wilson hitting that sweet home run last night. The team doesn’t have any other catching options on the 40-man roster, though they do have Willians Astudillo and Wynston Sawyer at Triple-A, and could potentially acquire another catcher.

I’m mostly mad right now because when I first told my Mom about Castro’s injury, she was all like, “I tore my meniscus once and I didn’t walk for six months” and I was like, “No way Mom, it’s just a minor thing. He probably doesn’t even need surgery.” Haha... whoops.
