Zachary Quinto is returning to television as a biohacker.

Deadline reports that Quinto will star in and executive produce a new series called Biopunk, based on the book Biopunk: DIY Scientists Hack the Software of Life by Wired's senior business/technology writer Marcus Wohlsen.

The series will focus on a group of "guerrilla scientists committed democratizing DNA the way the Internet did for information." Quinto will play the leader of the group of DIY garage scientists trying to change the world with their creations.

"Having spent some time in my career exploring the landscape of science-fiction -- it is a particularly exciting step to delve into a world of science-fact," Quinto told Deadline. "The unfathomably thrilling real-life work of bio-hackers is dramatically crafted with compelling and complex dynamics by Chase Palmer, and Marcus Wohlsen is a limitless source of insight into and information about this powerful and fascinating subculture."

Quinto and his producing team will be shopping the show to networks shortly to find it a home.

If it's picked up, Biopunk will be Quinto's first regular series starring role since Heroes ended in 2010. He's made guest appearances on Girls and Hannibal as well as lending his talents to event series The Slap and American Horror Story, but each were only one season engagements.

Quinto can next be seen in Star Trek: Beyond, which opens in theaters on July 22.
