What started as one of Britain’s most popular small cars has gained a worldwide following, and it’s not hard to understand why.

The Mini needs no introduction; no other car symbolises so much to so many people. The Cooper models of the Mini were the result of a collaboration between racing car builder John Cooper and the Mini’s creator Alec Issigonis. The first models were launched in 1961, with the S versions fitted with the iconic 1275cc engine arriving three years later. As the Cooper's sporting reputation cemented the car's place in history, a reworking of the original Cooper S was released in 1967, featuring all-round improvements, including a redesigned grille and upgraded interior, yet retaining some of the original design features such as external door hinges and sliding front windows.

Despite the Mini’s ubiquitous nature, the Cooper S MKII was a comparatively low-volume model, with just 6,300 cars built, of which 1479 were for the home market. According to its accompanying British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, the chassis number corresponds with a build date of 12.11.1969. It is documented as RHD UK market Austin Mini Cooper S MK II. At some point, it was exported to Greece, where it has spent most of its life basking in the warmer climate before getting a restoration in 1988 and finally making its way back home to the UK in 2014.

I buy cars I like the look of and want to enjoy - the Mini was a fantastic choice.

David, our vendor, has owned the car for just one year. Not long, you may think, that’s true. David is an amputee, so he can’t just get into anything and drive it without modifications or it being an automatic. What he tends to do for his fix of classic cars is buy them if they take his fancy and then enjoys being chauffeured around in them for a while before moving on to the next one. This is precisely what’s happened with this lovely Mk2 Mini Cooper S; although David loves the car, it has to go to help fund another dream car he has his eyes on.

David especially likes the colour combination and fantastic exhaust note of this Mini. Another thing that attracted him to purchase this example was the Greek provenance of life in a sunny climate, helping to keep the rust away.

Exterior

With a sporting resemblance to the famous number 37 car driven by Paddy Hopkirk - the mini will turn heads.

Wheels and Tyres

The Mini has Minilite Magnesium original alloy wheels. These are in excellent condition and shod with Yokahama A302R 165/70/R10 tyres which have a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

As mentioned, the bodywork on the Mini was restored in Greece in 1988. The panel gaps for the bonnet, doors, and boot are nice and tight, with an equal gap and no unsightly dings or dents. The bonnet is secured with a couple of period leather buckles, as is the boot lid. The chrome work around the car is in excellent condition with no signs of tarnishing.

Paint

Finished in bright red with a white roof, the paintwork presents exceptionally well. There are a few light swirl marks more noticeable in the sun, but nothing a detailer couldn’t remove or reduce. There are some small blisters on the front scuttle where the windscreen meets the body, and a couple of other blemishes in keeping with how long the car has been restored.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in good condition with no noticeable scratches spotted. The front windows slide open and close as they should, again with no apparent scratches. The opening quarter windows are in good order, and so is the chrome frame they sit in.

The headlights are in good condition with no apparent chips to the clear lenses, and there is a set of period lens protectors which are in good condition. The four front-mounted spotlights work as they should and are in good order. Running over the wheel arches and sills, this is in nice condition with no dents.

Interior

The original interior has been given a few rally-inspired period touches.

Seats and Carpets

The first thing you probably notice about the interior is the Safety Devices rear half roll cage, which is a bolt-in item that can be removed easily if desired.

The seats are said to be the originals which also have the adjustable backrest (quite a novelty in a 1969 Mini). These are finished in black vinyl, which has cracked in a couple of places but otherwise remains in good condition. The rear seat is in good order, as are the door card trims.

The carpet is in excellent condition, as is the headlining, which sits nice and tight with no sagging. Inside the boot is the battery, where it should be, and a steel spare wheel fitted with a new tyre.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, with no damage spotted. The instruments present well and are working correctly, with the odometer reading ~70,209 Kilometres. There have been additional panels fitted to hold the rev counter, and on the passenger side is a Haldex Twinmaster split timer with two stopwatches to the left.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is a three-spoke Moto-Lita item and is in good condition with no signs of excess wear. The gearknob is an aluminium ball with just the usual light surface scratches you would expect.

Mechanics

What other engine is needed for a Mini Cooper S - non-other than the famous 1275cc.

Engine and Gearbox

The Mini is fitted with the classic 1275cc engine with twin SU carburettors. In 2017, the car had the carbs stripped down, cleaned and overhauled with new needle valves. The car fires up as it should, which can be seen in our Mechanical Review video.

Fitted with a four-speed gearbox, the mini has a nice gear change, and there are no unwanted noises coming from the transmission or engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The hydroelastic suspension appears in good condition, with no knocks or bangs on the road, and the car sits nice and level from whichever angle you look at it.

Fitted with discs at the front and drums to the rear, the brakes are said to pull the Mini to a halt in a straight line with no issues.

The Drive

Being out in the Mini is a great experience. The agile car is fantastic fun to drive. Being so light, the car feels relatively quick, and once out on the twisty bits, it becomes even more fun! If you’ve never experienced Mini motoring, now is the time to start your Mini adventure.

Electrics and Other

Being in a Mini, life is much simpler, with no electronics to worry about. The lights and wipers work, and there are a couple of additional switches for the spotlights and a battery isolator. And really, that’s all you need.

History and Paperwork

The catalogue that you see the Mini in is not a sales brochure - but the Greek owner's private collection of vehicles.

As the Mini has only been in the UK since 2014 and was already restored for the Greek gentleman's collection, there isn’t a tremendous amount of paperwork. However, there are some invoices for various service parts, the wheels and tyres.

The British Heritage Trust Certificate is present and shows the build date and the dealer it was supplied to on 14.11.1969, H. A Saunders Limited, London.

There is an FIA Car Pass to compete in a historic regularity run in 2013. However, this would have now expired, and it should be known that if you do wish to compete in such events, you would need to carry out the relevant checks to see if the car complies with the current regulations.

As peviously asked the engine Hi there, the V5 and other information quotes an engine size of 1275cc, however the FIA paperwork quotes 1071cc?? Can you confirm the body and engine are that of the original manufactured vehicle in 1969
