The world’s on fire. In the past few years even more of us have become aware of the looming climate crisis, and are actively making eco-friendly decisions in our daily lives and beyond. If you’re a climate-conscious traveller, you’ll be pleased to discover that TripAdvisor, in partnership with Corona, has crunched the numbers and uncovered the most sustainable travel destinations in the world.
To measure the overall friendliness-to-environment of different cities around the world, TripAdvisor looked at customer reviews specifically regarding the sustainability levels of hotels, restaurants, and experiences. According to the travel site, the cities recognised are ‘doing the most to minimise the impact of travel and protect their environments.’
Only one UK city made it into the top ten and, surprisingly enough, it wasn’t Brighton.
Belfast was tenth in the list, just below Galway south of the border. The Northern Irish capital was praised for its ‘feelings of optimism and life pulsing through the city’, which ‘makes for an energising getaway’.
‘It’s never been easier to tour the city, thanks to a number of intriguing bus, taxi, boat and pedestrian options,’ said TripAdvisor, highlighting Belfast’s eco-friendly travel options.
Eleven out of the 15 cities awarded by TripAdvisor were in mainland Europe, Scandinavia, or Ireland. Copenhagen took the top spot as the most sustainable travel destination, with Stockholm and Bordeaux rounding out the top three.
