WAR IN UKRAINE

Ukraine’s counteroffensive in maps: tracking the war with Russia

As summer nears its end we map the progress made by Ukrainian forces, kilometre by kilometre

It was supposed to be a “spring offensive” — with Ukrainians and their western allies pinning their hopes on a decisive push to retake critical parts of the east and south of the country occupied by Russia.

Spring turned to summer with hardly any movement on the 600-mile front that formed after Kyiv’s forces last made significant gains in the autumn.

Then, at the start of June, Ukrainian troops and tanks began to inch forward.

Yet as summer draws to a close, how successful has the counteroffensive been so far?

Here The Sunday Times measures the progress of Ukrainian forces, metre by metre, tracking just how much ground has been reclaimed and how much more needs to be retaken in order to finally liberate Ukraine.
