Bassist Peter Ó Braonáin, drummer Jerry Fehily, and saxophonist Leo Barnes joined them soon after.

They then renamed the group Hothouse Flowers and began writing songs and performing all around Ireland.

HOW DID THEY BECOME SUCCESSFUL?

In 1986, U2 star Bono watched the Hothouse Flowers perform on TV and saw something in the band.

He helped them release their first single Love Don't Work This Way on U2's Mother Records label.

From there - the band got a record deal with the PolyGram subsidiary London Records.

WHEN DID THEY RELEASE THEIR FIRST ALBUM?

They released their first album People in 1988.

It reached the number one spot in the Irish charts within a week.

It became one of the biggest-selling Irish debut albums in history.

DID THEY APPEAR ON EUROVISION?

In 1988, the Eurovision Song Contest took place in the RDS in Dublin, Ireland.

A lavish film clip of the Hothouse Flowers performing Don’t Go was played in the interval between contestant and the scoring which gave the band a massive international boost.

WHEN DID THE BAND TAKE A BREAK?

What was supposed to be a year-long break in 1994, turned into several years.

In this time, the group split from their long-time manager, and Leo and Jerry left the band.

The rock band reappeared in 1998 and released Born and performed in the Glastonbury Festival.
