Who is Chiwetel Ejiofor?

Chiwetel Ejiofor, 41, was born in Forest Gate, London to Nigerian parents.

His younger sister Zain Asher is a CNN correspondent.

In 1988, when Chiwetel was 11 he was involved in a car crash in Nigeria which killed his father.

He attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art for one year before leaving to star in Stephen Spielberg's film Amistad.

His notable roles include playing the role of Lola in the film adaptation of the musical Kinky Boots and Dr. Vincent Kapoor in The Martian.

Other film credits include Love Actually, Mary Magdalene and Doctor Strange.

In 2019, we will see him voice the evil lion Scar in the photo-realistic animated remake of The Lion King.

How many Bafta awards has Chiwetel Ejiofor won?

In 2014 Chiwetel won a Bafta for Best Actor in a Leading Role after starring as Solomon Northup in 12 Years A Slave.

The film is based on a memoir from 1853 and tells the story of an African-American man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery.

The role also earned Chiwetel an Oscar nomination for Best Actor but he lost out to Christian Bale. 

In 2006 he was nominated for a Bafta in the Rising Star category.

Has Chiwetel Ejiofor directed any movies?

The famous actor will be making his feature-length directorial debut with The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind in 2019.

It tells the story of a boy in Malawi who helps his village to build a wind turbine after reading about them in a library book.

Chiwetel's movie will come out in the UK on February 28, 2019.

In 2008 he wrote and directed the short film Slapper which was based on an idea by editor/director Yusuf Pirhasan.

Then in 2013, he directed another short film, Columbite-Tantalite.
