The West Pier in different seasons

The West Pier is Brighton's most photographed building even though there is very little left of it.  It's distinctive shaped metal skeleton makes a striking silhouette against the sky particularly at sunset.  People love to photograph it in all seasons and at any time of day.  Here are some particularly nice examples by Brighton Beauty who posts a daily picture on Twitter.

Starling Murmuration

This natural spectacle takes place mostly at twilight. Thousands of starlings fly up to 20 miles to gather and find their winter roost under the Pier. Flying in a close formation, they create stunning silhouettes before they settle down. Those moving images are spellbinding to watch as they fly in formation.

The best time so watch this spectacle is during December when the flocks can swell to 40,000 birds, making them visible along the seafront between Brighton Palace Pier and the Beach Huts in Hove.

The pier looks beautiful when the sun sparkles off the sea. You can borrow a deckchair and make yourself comfortable while you admire the view.

Furthermore, it is the place where the world's biggest free beach and watersports festival takes place - Paddle Round The Pier. At the beginning of July a huge range of events take place in the sea, on the beach and on Hove Lawns with approximately 55,000 visitors.

Sitting on the beach might not be the most tempting thing to do when it's cold and rainy but the sea looks like something out of one of those biblical epics when it's windy and getting close to it feels like an adventure.

You just haven't been to Brighton if you haven't got a picture of the West Pier at sunset.  This is the iconic image of the city and, even if you're a long term resident, you just have to take a picture if you're walking along the seafront and see the sun setting just perfectly behind the pier.
