Our dog is the ugliest in Britain – I think she’s beautiful and love her no matter what

A PROUD owner of Britain's ugliest dog has said she's beautiful and she loves her no matter what.

Thought to be half pug, half Chinese crested, Peggy, who is now five, is officially the nation's "most hideous".

She was crowned the winner in a competition run by ParrotPrint.com.

Holly, from East Yorkshire, said she has a soft spot for the underdog and one that isn't deemed attractive to others.

She said: "We loved her the instant we laid eyes on her with her big brown eyes, little tuft of white hair and her tongue lolling out to one side.

"I just felt sorry for her.

We fell in love with her, but at first I just felt a bit sorry for her.

"Not everybody thinks she's beautiful.

"We do, but I can appreciate why others don't."

Admitting people have questioned why she would enter her dog into an ugly contest, Holly said it isn't cruel because Peggy doesn't know any different.

She added: "She gets told she's beautiful day in day out."

The hairless dog, who started life as the runt of an accidental litter, has to be wrapped up in layers during winter and lathered up in sun cream during summer so she doesn't get burnt.

Peggy was one of seven aiming for the title of Britain’s ugliest dog.

She will receive a makeover and a pamper session at a doggie spa after coming first.

Holly said Peggy is everything the family wanted and they love having her in their home.

"From the moment she arrived she's been a beloved addition to our family," she added.

"She has grown up alongside our two boys and is the most loving, laid back and gentle dog we could ever ask for.

"Even though some people find Peggy’s unusual appearance strange, and in rare cases off putting and despite Peggy winning the ugliest dog in the UK title, we think she is beautiful both inside and out, and wouldn’t change her for the world."
