Thomas the Tank Engine has made his last stop in St. Thomas.
The famous train that has been loved by children for generations and was the star of St. Thomas’s annual ‘Day Out with Thomas’ event for the past 15 years will no longer return to the city due to lack of attendance.
John Shapendonk of The Railworks Coalition broke the news during a council reference committee meeting, noting over the past five years attendance at ‘Day Out With Thomas’ has dropped, on average, 17 per cent each year.
Up until 2018, when the event actually lost money, Thomas spent two weekends in the city. That was reduced to a single weekend last summer, resulting in a small $15,000 profit.
Shapendonk added that they will be bringing smaller railway-themed events the city each year which should equal the net revenue from ‘Day Out With Thomas’.
