STATEN ISLAND, NY--
Peter Steele, lead singer for bands Carnivore and Type O Negative who has in the past faked his own death, has been confirmed dead for real by band members. In recent hours, as more reports come in, fans on Silive and elsewhere are voicing their sorrow and condolences. Here's a sampling:
Brian Cogan, longtime Staten Islander and author of "The Encyclopedia of Punk."

Just wanted to say that Pete Steele's death is a real shame. Not only was he a member of two seminal bands, Carnivore, and Type O Negative, but he was one of the few to really try and bridge the gap between punk and metal. He had a wide range of musical influences and it showed in his bands. His music could be brutal and almost eerie at the same time.
Rich Ventre, of South Beach, a manager:
I managed bands that played with Type O Negative a bunch of times. He was actually a really cool guy, it's a huge shame. I don't know what happened.
The singer's death was also a trending topic on Twitter and Facebook, where fans from around the country and the world were sending their condolences.
RIP Peter Steele. Wolf Moon on the way home from work. Hope you found the peace you were looking for.
@ItzKat noted the singer was probably playing the big gig in the sky with deceased Pantara guitarist Dimebag Darrell:
