Francis Minturn Sedgwick (1904 - 1967) and his wife Alice Delano de Forest (1908 - 1988) purchased in 1952 the remaining portion of the Mexican Rancho La Laguna de San Francisco. This is the ranch where Edie Sedgwick grew up. They subsequently willed the bulk of the ranch to the University of California at Santa Barbara; the University purchased the remaining interest from their children.

The Sedgwick Reserve" is now a part of the Univesity of California Natural Reserve System.

"The mission of the Natural Reserve System is to contribute to the understanding and wise management of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching, research, and public service at protected natural areas throughout California."

Paul Nefstead nfstd@cox.net, a docent and historian of the reserve, has written a nice history of the Rancho.

Paul Nefstead also extended an invitation to show us "the ranch." We gratefully accepted, and took the photos below. Thank you, Paul.
