Dome Home

Property Watch: A Real Life Hobbit Hole

Equal parts sustainable and mystical, this unusual getaway connects to state park trails—perfect for starting your new fairy-tale life in the forest.

In the woods by Camano Island State Park dwells a magical little hobbit hole, with three domes and a bonus stargazing room in the back. The unusual structure is made with SuperAdobe, a sustainable earth building technique that uses coiled sandbags and barbed wire (sometimes filled in with plaster), to create incredibly durable dome homes. Colorful clusters of these domes make up an entire hotel on an island in Iran; here, it allows a small home to support creative sculptural work like deep circular windows and curved corridors.

The gothic arch front door leads to the largest dome, a central hub to the three rooms that spin off it. It’s a marvel of its own, peppered with varying sizes of porthole windows and even a little porthole cat door, all lined inside with a gold metallic color. A loft with a pull-down ladder nestles into the round ceiling above; beneath it, a curved sofa sits in front of a wood stove. An arched passageway leads to a round, utilitarian kitchen in an adjacent dome. The sink and refrigerator work without any funny business—the home is powered and has running water.

A padded tunnel leads to the ultra-cozy sleeping dome, which is essentially a giant bed frame; a queen mattress fits perfectly inside two built-in nightstand shelves. Its portholes are larger, nested deep inside the adobe, and also lined in gold, creating a rather mystic effect.

Another gothic arched door in the living room opens to a small bunkroom in a more traditional squared design. But this space has its own twist: A tempered-glass ceiling built especially for stargazing. Two bunk beds are built into one wall, but who wants the bottom bunk with a roof like that?

The tub and shower are just outside the front door so you can bathe below the stars. The rest of the bathroom situation is, thankfully, more private—it’s an outhouse with a brand-new composting toilet. In case that doesn’t quite cut it, it’s been tested for a septic system.

The one-acre wooded property sits right along the trails for Camano Island State Park, and includes access to a private community beach with space to store a kayak, too.
