Tatiana Golovin and Dinara Safina became the biggest casualties of the women's singles on a rain-free fourth day of Wimbledon.

Golovin, the 17th seeded Frenchwoman who caused a stir this week by wearing red knickers, and 13th seed Safina, both crashed out in the second round.

Golovin, playing only her second match after two months out with an ankle injury, was beaten by 16-year-old Austrian Tamira Paszek, the world number 54.

Paszek, who took world number two Maria Sharapova to three sets in Birmingham recently, enhanced her fast-growing reputation with a 6-2 4-6 6-1 victory that earns her a crack at another seed, Russian Elena Dementieva, in the third round on Saturday.

Safina, the 21-year-old sister of former world number one Marat Safin, lost 6-4 7-5 to world number 71 Akiko Morigami, who hit 29 winners in an impressive display.

Morigami, 27, who has never been beyond the third round in four previous visits to Wimbledon, now takes on three-time former champion Venus Williams, who was in a hurry against Czech rival Hana Sromova.

Williams was given a fright in the first round when on the brink of defeat against unknown Russian Alla Kdryaytseva but she looked much more focused this time and took just 51 minutes to wrap up a 6-2 6-2 win.

Sixth seed Ana Ivanovic moved serenely through to the third round to strengthen her challenge for a first grand slam title.

The 19-year-old Serbian breezed past Meilen Tu 6-4 6-3.

Ivanovic made just 11 unforced errors to earn a third-round meeting with France's Aravane Rezai, who beat 29th seed Francesca Schiavone, of Italy, 6-4 2-6 6-4.

The Russians continue to make steady progress, with eighth seed Anna Chakvetadze brushing past Tatiana Poutchek in straight sets and Dementieva, seeded 12, beating Iveta Benesova 6-2 6-2.

Britain's hopes, however, ended when Dutch girl Michaella Krajicek - sister of former men's champion Richard - knocked out Katie O'Brien 6-0 6-1 in just over an hour.

Krajicek, seeded 31, will now face Chakvetadze.

In second-round matches in the top half of the draw held over from yesterday, seeded players Daniela Hantuchova, Alona Bondarenko, Patty Schnyder, Katarina Srebotnik and Lucie Safarova all made smooth progress to the last 32.

Srebotnik, the 19th seed from Slovakia who beat Britain's Elena Baltacha in the first round, overwhelmed Nika Ozegovic, of Croatia, 6-1 6-1 to set up a meeting with Hantuchova, the tenth seed who beat Russian Elena Likhovtseva 7-5 7-6 (7-3).

Defending champion Amelie Mauresmo ensured there would not be another scalp for the 'Graveyard of Seeds' as she beat Yvonne Meusburger in straight sets on Court Two.

The French fourth seed needed less than an hour to complete a 6-1 6-2 victory and will now meet Mara Santangelo of Italy, the 28th seed, for a place in the last 16.

On Centre Court, world number two Maria Sharapova, winner here in 2004, saw off the challenge of Severine Bremond 6-0 6-3.
