Roger Federer has been named as the top seed for the US Open after claiming eight titles this year, including the Australian Open and Wimbledon crowns.

He is followed by American Andy Roddick, who won his only Grand Slam at the US Open a year ago, Carlos Moya of Spain, and 2001 champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia. Tim Henman has been seeded fifth.

Fresh off a gold medal-winning performance at the Olympics, Justine Henin-Hardenne will be the top seed in the women's draw.

Henin-Hardenne, who will look to defend her US Open title, has won five tournaments, including the Australian Open, in 2004 despite being sidelined for much of the year with a viral infection.

After losing in the second round of the French Open, the 22-year-old Belgian did not play until the Olympics, when she beat Amelie Mauresmo of France to claim the gold medal.

Henin-Hardenne has won three Grand Slams, including the French Open and the US Open last year.

Mauresmo, who has yet to win a Grand Slam, is the second seed, followed by American Serena Williams, a three-time US Open champion, French Open champion Anastasia Myskina of Russia and American Lindsay Davenport, the 1998 champion who has won her last four tournaments.

For the fourth consecutive year, both draws have 32 seeded players.
