Now, if you’re thinking about switching to using natural hair care you likely have some questions ranging from "What’s in it?" to "Does it actually clean my hair?".
We believe in natural hair care because we know it brings out the best in your hair. Since we get a lot questions about its effectiveness, we're here to share all the answers with you.
Choose the best fit for your hair type and pair it with our ultimate natural conditioner. It’s that simple—one shampoo and one conditioner and your hair care routine is complete. The latest hair care technology respects your hair and scalp, and the result is healthy, balanced, beautiful hair
Rosemary is renowned for its scalp-stimulating properties, while flaxseed oil nourishes. These key ingredients make our Rosemary Mint Shampoo a favourite among customers dealing with a dry scalp. If you're experiencing scalp clarity issues, such as buildup leading to itchiness, consider giving our Vanilla Coconut Shampoo a try.
We have just the combination for you. Start with our Vanilla Coconut Shampoo to help boost the look of volume to your fine hair. Next, follow up with any one of our nourishing conditioners, ensuring to only apply it to the ends of your hair, avoiding the roots.
All our shampoo formulas are formulated for a healthy, balanced hair and scalp - whether wavy, curly or straight. If your curly hair is often thirsty or dry, our Cedarwood & Lime Shampoo may be your perfect hydration match.
Yes, our Wild Kindness Natural Hair Care line is safe for colour treated hair. The colour on your hair is usually deposited on the hair shaft through a chemical process. Our hair care products will not negatively interact with this process or its effects.
As natural products can take some getting used to, we recommend trying out your new hair care routine for 3-4 weeks to allow your scalp time to adjust. If you find your products are not working out, please reach out to us via phone, live chat or email and we’ll be happy to assist.
Great question! Soap nuts are a berry (and not actually a nut) so they do not contain the protein allergens found in true nuts.
Our shampoos are nourishing on their own, but to round out your hair care routine we recommend pairing your shampoo with one of our natural conditioners. Formulated to add moisture, shine and to detangle your hair, our conditioners are suitable for all hair types and are available in a range of scents.
To get the most out of your natural conditioner, we recommend using a small amount on the tips of your hair for soft, smooth, detangled strands. Explore our range of Natural Conditioners.
All our natural conditioners are made from the same hydrating and nourishing base formula, with scents designed to complement every shampoo scent. If your hair tends to be dry or is damaged, try pairing your favourite natural conditioner with our Cedarwood & Lime Shampoo.
Yes. We’ve never used sulfates in any of our products and we never will.
Sulfates are commonly used in non-natural hair care to create a lather and loosen up oils on your hair. The problem? Well, sulfates (or SLS) are a known irritant, causing a host of skin problems, including dryness. The chemical is also harmful for the environment once washed down the drain.
The lather is produced naturally from the saponins in the soap nut extract working together with coco betaine, which is made from coconut oil and beetroot extract.
Yes, it really does! Our Wild Kindness Shampoo uses some powerful natural, plant-based ingredients to keep your hair feeling clean and healthy:
Soap nut aqueous extract & sodium cocoyl glutamate: These plant-based cleansers gently remove dirt and unwanted build-up. Sodium cocoyl glutamate is an amino acid (the building blocks of protein) and soap nut extract is the cleanser from the shell of the soapberry.
Cellulose: Cellulose is the fibre component of a plant’s structure. This agent binds to the clean hair to help rebuild and condition, improving shine, smoothness, moisture-retention and combing.
Our Wild Kindness Hair Care line all have a biological neutral pH, however, the Vanilla Coconut Shampoo has a slightly higher pH to give thinner hair volume without weighing it down. All the pHs are between 5-7.
Our Wild Kindness Hair Care Line is not considered an effective treatment for psoriasis.
For children under two years, we advise only using only a small amount of our Scent Free Shampoo however this product is not tested for use on infants. For older children, any formula can be used however many kids love our Root Beer Shampoo.
Our formulas are not formulated with gluten-containing ingredients, however, our facility is not considered gluten-free and so we cannot guarantee that there has not been cross-contamination. If you have a gluten contact skin allergy, we would not recommend use.
Our hair care products have not been formulated with any animal products and we never test on animals.
The slight scent comes from the natural scent of the soap nut extract and smells similar to tamarind. There are no essentials oils added to our scent free products.
The light brown colour of these products comes from the humic acid and soap nut extract which will disappear as soon as you lather up. No colour will deposit on to your hair, tub or shower.
The light yellow comes from the blood orange essential oil.

I am looking for a shampoo that does not have alcohol as an ingredient. My hair is white but has yellowed from hair products containing alcohol. What about yours?

Very well explained

Thanks Rita for reaching out with this question! The best shampoo for your hair can vary on many
factors, but our Vanilla Coconut Shampoo is the most cleansing and helps provide
extra volume for thin hair. We recommend pairing it with one of our conditioners for
extra hydration and detangling (the orange jasmine scent is a divine
combination!). Please feel free to reach out via phone, email or live chat if you have any further questions – we’ll be very happy to help!

What shampoo and conditioner do you recommend for very fine and thinning hair please? I do not colour it. It’s going grey as well.

I absolutely loved reading your blog post on natural hair care! 🌿 It’s evident that you’re passionate about promoting clean, natural solutions for hair care. The FAQs you’ve covered are incredibly informative and will be a valuable resource for anyone looking to make more conscious choices for their hair. Thank you Monica for your question!
Our Vanilla Coconut Shampoo will be a great option for you and it’s our most cleansing formula thanks to two natural acids – lactic and humic acid. These natural acids will help you get a deeper clean and it’s also a great option for people who want more volume but do not need the extra hydration.
Best of luck and please feel free to reach out to us via live chat or email if you’d like to chat further.

Which shampoo works best for EXTREMELY oily hair that requires daily shampooing?
September 27, 2022
Thank you Jess for your question!
Residue and soap scum can be a challenge when using oil based liquids or bar soaps with hard water. We do have a variety of shampoos including some that are lighter in oils (like our Root Beer Shampoo), or are more cleansing with a different PH (like our Vanilla Coconut Shampoo). Please look out for an email from us, we’d love to help you find the best option!
As always, please feel free to email us at info@rockymountainsoap.com if you ever need personalized recommendations or support :)

I see back in 2017 you commented that your shampoo does not leave a film with hard water, and I did not have trouble with your shampoo before, but this new formulation leaves a terrible residue on my hair. I’ve only tried the Rosemany Mint; does one of the others react less with hard water, perhaps?

Thank you for your comments and questions!
@Alyssa – We would recommend our Cedarwood & Lime Shampoo for post-partum hair. This formula is designed to help repair dry, damaged or distressed hair. Follow up with any of our conditioners to help hydrate and nourish your locks.
@Nicole – It’s always wonderful to hear a good news story like yours! We’re so glad that your new conditioner purchase has helped tame the frizz!
@Michael – Although our haircare products are not formulated specifically for dry scalps, switching to a natural shampoo is always a good start. We’d recommend looking at our Scent Free Shampoo. Made without essential oils, this shampoo is perfect for sensitive scalps and won’t dry your scalp out any further.
As always, feel free to contact us via live chat or email and we’ll be happy to continue the conversation! You can email us at info@rockymountainsoap.com.

Hi there! What shampoos and conditioners do you recommend for post partum hair? (Gets distressed around the 3 month mark)
August 02, 2022
Hi. I made it to your warehouse sale last week and (among other items) I bought the Rosemary Mint Hair Conditioner (it was the only ‘flavour’ available when I arrived). I’ve never used RMSC conditioner before.
I am so impressed. My hair is quite frizzy when first washed, and I apply several products to smooth and shine it. I ignored instructions and applied the conditioner all over; liberally at the ends and more conservatively through the rest. What a difference. Other conditioners claim to control frizz, but I never experience that effect – hair is always still frizzy. Not only did it greatly reduce my frizz, it also left my hair shiny. And even though I used it all over, contra to instructions, my hair is not in the least bit heavy or oily. Great job!!

I have a dry scalp. Which products would you recommend for me?
January 13, 2021

I am wondering if you would consider selling bath salts in paper bag packaging to reduce the use of plastic packing. I understand that the plastic is recyclable but paper would also be recyclable and create less waste.
January 11, 2021
Hi @DIANE there’s no update to our formula. We released our current hair care line in July 2019. Thanks for reaching out!
January 11, 2021
Did you change your shampoos again, just when we can’t smell them or anything
September 28, 2020
Hi @Alexis
Our Shampoos and Conditioners are totally natural and Toxin Free. You should have success with them! If you find you’re not happy for whatever reason, however, we do offer a full product satisfaction guarantee. If you’re dissatisfied, all we ask for in return is your feedback.
Thanks!

Hi there! I am African American and looking for nontoxic hair line to use. I do not put any chemicals or color in my hair. I am completely natural. That being said my hair needs a lot of hydration. Would you say that your shampoo and conditioner would be good for natural african american hair? Thanks!

Such a lovely post. These are some of the most asked questions and even I have encountered these questions so many times. Thanks for addressing them here. Loved the post.
June 05, 2020
Was the rosemary mint shampoo and conditioner (specifically in travel size) discontinued? If so what is a similar alternative?
Thanks!
June 04, 2020
I have hair that is both very fine and dry. Which product should I use?
May 25, 2020
I colour my hair myself simply because I can’t afford to have it done at a salon.
What would you suggest for a shampoo and conditioner ?
May 25, 2020
Do you no longer sell the rosemary peppermint shampoo and conditioner? If not, which current shampoo/conditioner would be most similar.
Thanks!
January 13, 2020
Rosemary leaf oil is listed in the ingredients of Normal Hair Wild Kindness Shampoo. Are the oils in your shampoos infused oils or essential oils?
Thanks!
December 13, 2019
What shampoo would you suggest for graying hair? Are you going to come out with a purple toning shampoo at some point for this. Thanks for your anticipated response.☺
December 13, 2019
I have the lovely Rosemary soap bar and use it for shampoo. Would like a volume building conditioner to go with it. I am allergic to aloe vera so it cannot contain that. Do you have such a product?
December 13, 2019
I am African-American and I straighten and color my hair. Do your hair care products work for African-American hair?
June 14, 2017
Hi @Erin and @Mike I’ve been assured by our chemist that our shampoo will work just fine with hard water and will not leave a film.
May 10, 2017
@Melissa we do actually already make a solid shampoo bar! You can find it on our website, here: https://www.rockymountainsoap.com/collections/natural-bar-soap/products/shampoo-bar-with-rosemary
I am also happy to share that all of our products will be undergoing a packaging review this year, as part of improving our sustainability goals. Please stay tuned for these future improvements.

@ Beverley Vass all of our products are made with natural ingredients and are chemical free, so they are safe to wear in the ocean.
May 10, 2017
@Linda Barnum all of our products contain mixtures of natural preservatives and essential oils, which work together to prevent microbial growth. This mixture varies by each product we sell, so if you are interested in understanding the make up of a particular product please let me know and I would be more than happy to share that information with you!
April 30, 2017
Will you consider making solid shampoos & conditioners so you no longer have plastic packaging?
April 27, 2017
How do you prevent microbial growth in your products?
Thanks
Linda

This will be more of a question than a comment. I’m wondering if your shampoo, conditioner, and insect repellent are reef free? I go to Mexico and I swim in the ocean with the fish and coral and don’t want to damage that environment. I am a big fan of RMS products.
April 21, 2017
I am curious, how well your shampoo works with very hard well water.
April 20, 2017
I am a hairstylist and have tried a few of these shampoos to finally have something to offer my clients as a 100% natural line because no professional line seems to deliver what they promise. The first time I used these I was very impressed. I also don’t find they impede the colouring process. I only wish they had a good one for restructuring ends and an ultra moisturizing one. Also it would be amazing to see a blow dry Serum.
April 20, 2017
Does your shampoo work with hard water? A lot of natural shampoos react with hard water to leave a film.
Comments will be approved before showing up.
