How IKEA Delivery Fees and Assembly Work—and Is It Worth It?

Shipping could save you a trip, but you need to understand a few things about IKEA delivery before you buy.

Part of the joy—or joyful misery—of shopping at IKEA is prowling the aisles of the enormous warehouse while seeking that item code that means you've found your BILLY bookcase. However, if snacking on Swedish meatballs and pushing around a laden-down cart isn't your thing, you can get your items delivered.

There is a fee for IKEA delivery, but you can get special discounts (and even free shipping) when you join the IKEA Family membership. Shipping IKEA purchases is less complicated than you may expect and can be ideal when you need help putting those items together. Here's everything you need to know.

Ikea Delivery Options

Some seasonal or special edition items aren't available for delivery, but IKEA will bring the majority of your purchases to your door. (Most items have an option to buy on the store's website.) When you check out, you can choose delivery or Click & Collect, where you order online and then pick up the items at the store. If you choose delivery, the site will ask for your zip code and use that to calculate shipping costs.

Small Order Shipping

Smaller orders over $50 shipped within the U.S. can be delivered starting at $5 when you sign up for a free IKEA Family membership. Orders must weigh 50 pounds or less and may even qualify for free shipping, depending on weight. If you are not a member, IKEA delivery fees for small order shipping start at $10.

Standard Delivery on Larger Items

Large items can also be shipped with standard delivery starting at $19 for orders under 200 pounds. Pick a date range for when you want your items delivered, and you will be notified once a date is selected by the carrier. You don't have to be an IKEA Family member for this option. However, it is only offered in some zip codes, so be sure to check that yours is available at check out online.

Scheduled Doorstep Delivery

If you have a specific delivery date in mind, the standard doorstep delivery option is available. This IKEA delivery fee starts at $29 for members and $39 for non-members. Choose the date you want your items delivered, and receive a notification from the carrier the day before with a four-hour time window for delivery.

Scheduled In-Home Delivery With Express Option

IKEA can also deliver furniture to your room of choice with scheduled in-home delivery. Family member rates start at $59, and non-member rates start at $69. Choose a date and time window for your new multi-piece media center to be brought straight to your door or living room, and the carrier will confirm the time the night before.

You may need those items delivered fast, and in that case, IKEA has the express in-home delivery option with next-day delivery. Rates start at $69 for members and $79 for non-members and is only available in select locations.

Will IKEA Assemble My Furniture?

IKEA partners with TaskRabbit for assembly services. If you're interested in having someone else put together your MALM dresser, you can have an assembly specialist come to your home. There is an hourly rate that varies by each TaskRabbit specialist, with a 1-hour minimum charge to be paid once your furniture is assembled.

Is the Delivery Fee Worth It?

Perusing the enormous showroom and picking up furniture from an IKEA store might seem like a rite of passage for any furniture shopper on a budget, but it's not always possible for those who are far from an IKEA store, don't have a car, or are unable to lift the heavy boxes.

To that end, the IKEA delivery fee is worth it for a smart (and convenient) solution to getting the quality and affordability of IKEA furniture home without a huge hassle. Plus, when you're an IKEA Family member, you may be able to bypass the fee on smaller items and get discounts on other shipping costs.
