A magnificent and colorful, small understorey palm from lowland rainforest to 600 m (2000 ft.) in northeastern Madagascar with canelike stems to about 6 m (20 ft.) tall and glossy green, bifid or sparsely pinnate leaves. In cultivation it prefers a tropical climate but is adaptable and easily grown. It might also make a great potted plant.
