Best Compatible Keyboards for Mac

No, you do not have to use that tiny Apple keyboard that came with your Mac.

Apple makes a decent external keyboard for its iMac lineup—and that can be purchased separately—but your fingers deserve better. Plenty of users report that the Apple Magic keyboard has shallow keys that can be uncomfortable to type on for long periods of time, and with how much time many of us spend on the computer, those minutes add up fast.

Fortunately, you don’t have to stick with an Apple keyboard if you’re looking for an upgrade. Many manufacturers offer superior keyboards than the ones that Apple sells that work perfectly well with your Mac and feature the special keys that trigger commands on the iOS operating system.

The Expert: As a tech journalist who spends long days reviewing and writing about the latest gadgets for publications such as The New York Times, Time, and The Atlantic, I unabashedly love keyboards and own more than a dozen, which I rotate depending on my mood and what I plan to use them for. I own several of the keyboards on this list, including the Logitech MX Keys Mini for Mac and the Logitech Craft keyboard, both of which are among my top choices for anyone who does a lot of typing.

I’m primarily a Mac user, with an M1 iMac as my main machine. One of the first things I did when I unboxed my new Mac was toss the included Apple keyboard into a drawer and grab a more comfortable keyboard from my repertoire.

What to Look for in a Mac Keyboard

    Size

One of the most important things to consider when buying a keyboard for your Mac is how big you want it to be. Larger keyboards tend to be more comfortable than smaller models because they don’t force your hands and arms into an unnaturally cramped position. And because they’re bigger, they’re typically heavier and thus less likely to slide around on your desk during a heavy typing session. However, small keyboards have their advantages as well. Petite keyboards take up less desk space, and some people with smaller hands find them easier to use. Small keyboards are also great for travel, as they can easily fit into your luggage.

I included dimensions for each keyboard in a LxWxH format. Because each brand lists dimensions differently, note that in this context, length refers to how long the keyboard is from left to right, width refers to its length from back to front, and height refers to the keyboard’s thickness.

    Wireless or Wired

Wireless keyboards are all the rage these days, and most of them communicate via the Bluetooth protocol that’s easy to use and fairly reliable. Because a wireless keyboard lacks wires, there’s no tangled mess to clutter up your desk—it’s a remarkably freeing experience if you’ve been using a wired keyboard for any length of time. That said, you’ll have to remember to keep your Bluetooth keyboard charged or have spare batteries on hand for the times it runs out of juice.

Apple’s own keyboard connects via Bluetooth. However, I’ve run into problems with Bluetooth compatibility with some keyboards that aren’t specifically marketed for Macs.

Despite the convenience of using a wireless keyboard, there’s a lot to be said for going the wired route. With a wired keyboard, you’re always connected, and you never have to worry about charging your device.

    Mac vs. PC Compatibility

One thing to keep in mind is that while most keyboards, even those marketed to Windows PC, will work with Mac, some keys may not offer the same functions. For example, the Mac Command key becomes the Windows key and the Windows Alt key replaces Mac’s Option key.

You may also notice a glaring hole in my recommendations: gaming keyboards. Because Macs aren’t designed to be great gaming machines, manufacturers lean heavily toward gaming keyboards specifically for PCs.

How We Selected These Keyboards for Mac

In addition to the many hours I spent testing Mac-compatible keyboards in person to contribute to this article, I’ve also used several of the keyboards on this list, such as the Logitech Craft, to write articles for my job as a technology journalist. To round out my evaluations, I looked through online reviews and talked to other keyboard users in my network to find the best Mac keyboards on the market. My final recommendations came down their durability, aesthetics, comfort, and how compatible they are with Mac.

    Pros
    • Attractive design
    • Solid feel
    Cons

With its understated look and premium features, Logitech’s Craft model is the connoisseur’s choice for Mac keyboards. My favorite part of this keyboard is the dial on the top that lets you do things like change the volume and configure other software options. The keys feel precise and comfortable with just the right amount of feedback to give you confidence in knowing that you’ve hit the right key. The backlighting on this model is particularly nice for working in dim lighting conditions.

      Cons
      • Small size may not be the solution you’re looking for

For anyone who loves the cute look of the standard Apple Magic keyboard but wants something that’s a little more comfortable, the MX Keys Mini is your best bet. This compact keyboard fits neatly off to the side of your desk but offers the same plush feeling of larger counterparts. The battery life is excellent, and I’ve spent weeks of solid typing on this device without having to recharge. It’s got a solid aluminum build that looks and feels great and should last for years.

      • Matches the Apple look
      • Numeric keypad
      Cons
      • Keys feel shallow and uncomfortable

If you absolutely must have a keyboard that matches your Mac in every possible way, then your best option is Apple’s own keyboard. It’s got the exact same look and feel as most Mac computers. The keys aren’t as nice to press as many other keyboards on the market, but some people actually prefer the lighter feel of the Apple keys, which are akin to those on many laptops. This model includes a nicely sized numeric keypad. For $50 more, you can get the same Apple keyboard with touch ID.

      • Sturdy
      • Fun design
      Cons

The A80 is a delightful accessory with a firm yet yielding keystroke and a rugged design that should hold up to years of pounding. I loved the solid feel of the A80 during my recent test, and it didn’t slide around on my desk. Also great was the unusual color scheme that highlighted important keys and made the A80 stand out in a sea of drab equipment. The rechargeable battery lasts long enough that I saw no decrease in power even after several weeks of use.

I’ve owned the Logitech Mx Keys for more than a year, and it’s become one of my favorite keyboards. It offers a firm feel when you depress the keys, and the frame is reassuringly solid and doesn’t move around on your desk no matter how feverishly you type. I love the subtle backlighting and minimalist look that match both my MacBook Pro and my M1 iMac. Battery life is excellent; I’ve gone months without having to charge this model.

          • Not the best looking keyboard

If you love the solid feel of a mechanical keyboard, then this Macally model is your best bet. The keys have a delicious, deep feeling that offer great feedback when you depress them. The backlighting is terrific, with three settings for varying levels of intensity. My favorite part of this keyboard is the slight angle at which it’s tilted, which makes it more comfortable than flat models (ahem, looking at you, Apple). The aesthetic of this keyboard screams early 2000s, but some people might find that charmingly retro.

If you want to fantasize that you’re writing the great American novel on a typewriter, this Azio model has the look you’re going for. With its round keys and metal and leather accents, the Retro Classic doesn’t look like any other keyboard on the market. Personally, I love the look, but in my recent hands-on test I found the keys to be a little uncomfortable compared to modern designs. The battery also didn’t last as long as that of some other wireless keyboards I’ve tried.

          Cons

At first glance, the Mistel looks bizarre, like the love child of a typewriter and an old-school pair of headphones. But once you start to use this keyboard, the genius becomes apparent, with the split design allowing you to position it into the most comfortable configuration with your Mac. It’s also got tons of goodies, like smooth mechanical keys and RGB backlighting for bling. Macro nerds will love the fact that the entire keyboard is programmable.

            • Great backlighting
            • Slim design
            Cons
            • Slightly cheap feeling

This Macally keyboard offers the slim look and feel of Apple’s own keyboard, but the key presses are more comfortable. I love the fact that the Macally is USB-powered, because that way I don’t have to worry about connection problems or the keyboard running out of juice at a critical moment. The backlighting is nice and bright and is adjustable to three levels. This model doesn’t have the same solid feel as some of its more expensive competitors, but I appreciated its slim design when I packed it as a backup for a recent trip.

The BK06 has been my travel companion for years when I need a keyboard to toss in my carry-on luggage that won’t weigh me down. It folds up into a tiny package and weighs just over 6 ounces, yet it is surprisingly comfortable to type on. I love the fact that I can use this keyboard with my Mac, iPhone, and iPad just by switching the Bluetooth connection. Don’t expect the same level of key travel as you'd get with a full-sized keyboard, however.

My fingers fly over the Air75, thanks to its low profile keys and perfect feedback. The result is my typing speed gets a boost, and my hands are less tired after a long typing session. I love the long battery life this keyboard offers and the RGB lighting mode with different effects. Another nice feature is that this keyboard supports both a wired and Bluetooth connection. More Mac Keyboard Tips From Our Expert Sascha Brodsky

            mac keyboards
Photo by Sascha Brodsky // Full-size keyboards, like the Macally 104 Key (top right) and Keychron Q3 mechanical (bottom) provide a more satisfying typing experience than the compact Apple Magic keyboard that comes with your Mac.

PM: What is the most important consideration with a Mac Keyboard?

SB: Comfort is king when it comes to choosing a Mac-compatible keyboard. There are many gizmos that manufacturers like to add on, like unique designs and nifty lighting, but none of that matters unless your fingers are comfortable dancing over the keys. It’s best to try a keyboard in person so you can find one that matches your typing style.

PM: What is the life expectancy of a keyboard? —How long before I need to replace it?

SB: A well-made mechanical keyboard should last a decade or more, even with heavy use. On the other hand, a membrane keyboard, which is the less expensive kind—might only last two years.

PM: Do you prefer wired or wireless keyboards?

SB: I prefer to have both around. I tend to use wireless keyboards, but for those times when I hit a snag and the model I’m using runs out of power just when I’ve gotten into a writing groove, it’s nice to know I have a wired option waiting in the wings. The latter doesn’t need any external power, as it gets the juice from your computer’s USB port.

PM: What’s the right size keyboard for most people?

SB: I strongly recommend buying a full-sized keyboard instead of a compact model. Your fingers will thank you for the extra space that makes typing a more comfortable experience. A few exceptions to this rule are if you travel often and need something smaller that fits in your carry-on or if you have absolutely maxed out your desk space.
