In a somber turn of events on Christmas Eve, Humane Society of Greater Niagara received a distressed and neglected Shih Tzu in dire need of immediate medical attention. The heartbreaking condition of the canine, whom the shelter staff has named "Gary" serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by neglected and abandoned animals.

Gary, a stray, arrived in deplorable condition, suffering from a severe untreated skin infection, overgrown nails, impacted and infected ears, and was malnourished. He is estimated to be around 1 to 2 years old.

Gary is currently under the care of the shelter’s veterinary staff, who are working diligently to address his extensive medical needs and provide the love and care he deserves. A special thank you to the wonderful veterinarian who provided care to Gary on Christmas Eve.

“We are deeply saddened to receive to Gary in such a state, especially on Christmas Eve” said Tanya Firmage, Executive Director. “This serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for community support to ensure the well-being of animals in distress.”

Humane Society of Greater Niagara is now reaching out to the community for assistance in covering the medical expenses required for Gary’s recovery. The shelter is also seeking information about Gary’s history, urging anyone with knowledge of his background to come forward.

Humane Society of Greater Niagara remains committed to its mission of providing a compassionate haven for animals in distress and appreciates the ongoing support of the community in creating a brighter future for all animals.

Anyone with information about Gary is asked to call the Humane Society of Greater Niagara in St. Catharines at 905-682-0767.
