This star’s behavior is hardly model.
Molly Bair, an 18-year-old rising star on the fashion catwalk is so thin that experts worry she’ll encourage teenagers to risk their health to look like her.
Pictures of Bair are already popping up on pro-anorexia websites such as “Runweight,” thanks to her success on the New York Fashion Week runways, modeling for such icons as Diane Von Furstenberg and Alexander Wang.
Another blog, Thinspiration Dreams, posted a picture of a practically thigh-less Bair under the quote, “Nothing tastes as good as thin feels,” a paraphrase of a comment by former waif icon Kate Moss in 2009.
And on the website MyProAna.com, one commenter was dying to know how the 6-foot-1 model stays so thin.
“I mean, look at her,” user Anne Hastings wrote.
All the attention has anorexia experts calling for Bair to take a public stand against the “toxic” use of her image.
“She could make a difference by advocating for body diversity in fashion,” says Claire Mysko, chief operating office of the National Eating Disorders Association.
For her part, Bair hasn’t commented on the notion that her success fuels anorexia. In fact, she argues that quirky looking people like her need support, too.
“I would never think that a girl who spent most of her childhood with a unibrow, glasses and a Yoda shirt would be in Vogue Italia,” she told CNN last week.
Of course, Bair is just the latest model whose gaunt figure has raised eyebrows — and concerns.
French model Isabelle Caro died from anorexia complications in 2010. And in April, France banned super-skinny models on runways and in campaigns in an attempt to curb the eating disorder.
