The story about angry fans outside Texans quarterback Matt Schaub’s house was a good one, a perfect narrative around which to comment on the importance of sports in our lives and fan behavior in general.
The only problem: It wasn’t exactly as dramatic as it sounds.
The Houston Police Department is sending out word that the story is not as it was first conveyed.
“Contrary to some reports, there was not a group of ‘angry fans’ outside the Schaub residence on Monday,” the department said in a statement sent out via Twitter. “A family member reported seeing a suspicious male in the driveway of the residence taking pictures. Police were not called to the home. No other information to release at this time.”
While the idea of a pitchfork- and torch-wielding mob furious about four straight weeks of pick-sixes didn’t turn out to be true, the fact that the story was so easy to believe might be the most depressing part of the whole chapter.
