This new balloon sculpture is made with 3 colors and is part of our new tutorial format: Twist 1 balloon in less thant 3 minutes!

This balloon turtle tutorial has recently been suggested on the French version of this blog article. It's a model I have done regularly and it has been very popular with everyone.

As usual, this article is divided into two complementary sections: a detailled video tutorial followed by a step by step photo guide. Last but not least, a comment section is available at the end of this tutorial.

As with all tutorials in this new series "Twist 1 balloon in less than 3 minutes", I will not go in detail into the basic skills of balloon twisting. I therefore encourage you, if you are still a little new in this field, to not hesitate beforehand to consult or review the basic techniques of balloon sculpture that I have listed for you below.

Items needed

  • 1 light green twisting balloon 260
  • 1 light brown twisting balloon 260
  • 1 white twisting balloon 260

Good morning ! Today, we will continue our new series which is called: Twist 1 balloon in less than 3 minutes!

This new tutorial was requested on my blog by "Borner_Line", which I take the opportunity to salute.

And I remind you, if you're a beginner, you'll probably have to check out some of the tutorials which are in the basic balloon twisting techniques section which you will find in the description, under the video.

Without further ado, let me show you how to make a balloon turtle in less than three minutes!

We will need 3 balloons: 1 green, 1 brown and 1 white.

We'll inflate the green balloon, leaving a margin at the beginning and also at the end.

We're going to split the balloon into two unequal segments, the smaller segments will be on the side with the smaller margin, and the larger segment will be on the side with the larger margin side.

We align these two long bubbles side by side, and we shorten the longest one, so that they both are the same size as the shorter one.

This will allow us to make a loop right in the middle of the two bubbles.

Then we make a first bubble about (the width of) two fingers, then a second, slightly larger bubble.

We do exactly the same on the other side, then we lock the two big bubbles together.

Then we bring the center of the small bubbles closer to the center of the big bubbles, and we lock them together.

We thin out both segments, and we make a bubble about the width of three fingers, at the end of the shortest segment.

Then, we align the longest segment, to make another long bubble.

Then, we take the longest bubble of the two remaining ones, and form a small round bubble at its base, which we will turn into a pinch-twist. That will form the turtle's tail.

Then inflate the brown balloon, leaving a good margin at the end.

The knot of the brown balloon will be locked at the junction of the turtle's head and front legs.

We then make a brown bubble the same size as the turtle's belly,  which will be blocked at the junction of the tail and the hind legs,

followed by a second bubble... and a third...

the bubbles on the sides should be a tiny bit longer than the bubbles in the middle,

a fourth bubble...

remember, when you lock balloons together, to use circular movements so that you avoid unnecessary friction

and the fifth bubble!

We pierce the end of the balloon that we no longer need, to let the excess air flow out, and we lock it well to make sure that it does not come undone.

We then take the white balloon, and we will start by making two small bubbles, that we will tie together tightly.

By locking the knot in this manner and using the pressure which remains at the base of the unused balloon, we will be able to tighten the two bubbles very closely together.

We cut the unnecessary excess balloon and tie a knot.

We have just formed the two eyes of the turtle that we are going to insert in the center of the very first loop we did.

Like that !

We make a little drawing for the eyes. and that's it !

You learned how to make a turtle in less than three minutes!

There you go, I hope you enjoyed this new format!

Do not hesitate to tell me which tutorial you would like me to publish next time.

And as usual: "See you very soon", for another lesson, with Môssieur Ballon!

How to Make a Balloon Turtle

how to twist a balloon turtle, step 1
1- We will need 3 twisting balloons (260s), a green one, a brown one and a white one.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 2
2- The balloon should not be inflated on both extremities, only in the middle (see images 5 to 9 on the ladybug tutorial).
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 3
3- Fold the ballon in 2 parts and, on the side of the smaller non-inflated margin,, make one bubble smaller than the other one.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 4
4- Then, on the longer segment, starting from the non-inflated side,, twist a second bubble of almost the same size as the first one (does not have to be exactly the same).
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 5
5- This will automatically create a third bubble in the middle, which we will turn into a loop. This will be the turtle's head.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 6
6- Take one of the two balloon segments under the loop, and make a first oval bubble (about 2 fingers wide),
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 7
7- followed by a second slightly larger oval bubble (about 3 fingers wide)..
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 8
8- Then, do exactly the same thing with the other balloon segment: first a small oval bubble (about 2 fingers wide),
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 9
9- followed by a second slightly larger oval bubble (about 3 fingers wide).
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 10
10- Lock the 2 large bubbles together, then bring the center of the 2 smaller oval bubbles closer to the center of the 2 larger oval bubbles,
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 11
11- in order to lock them together too. These will be the two front legs of the turtle.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 12
12- Thin out and distribute the air harmoniously in the remaining balloon segments.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 13
13- If necessary, slide the knot back to recover a little more margin (see air pressure control).
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 14
14- before thinning out and distributing the air in the balloon segment where the knot is.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 15
15- Then take the shortest remaining balloon segment (it doesn't matter if it's the side of the knot or not), and make an oval bubble (about 3 fingers wide).
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 16
16- Then line up the other balloon segment to make a long bubble the same size as the one in front of the last bubble you just made.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 17
17- Lock these two large bubbles together to make the belly of the turtle.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 18
18- If necessary, again recover a little margin by sliding the knot backwards.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 19
19- Make a bubble at the base of the longest of the two remaining balloon segments,
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 20
20- and transform it into a pinch-twist. That will be the little tail of our turtle.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 21
21- At this stage, you should get a shape similar to this one
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 22
22-To make the shell, we will inflate the brown balloon except for a margin of about the width of a hand, which will not be inflated.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 23
23- You must lock the knot of the brown balloon between the head and the front legs of the turtle.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 24
24- Do not forget to thin out and lengthen the brown balloon.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 25
25- Make a first bubble the same size as the turtle's belly,
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 26
26- and lock it at the level of the turtle's tail and hind legs.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 27
27- Make a second bubble and lock it at the level of the head and the front legs.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 28
28- Don't forget to push the air towards the end of the balloon from time to time.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 29
29- Then make a third bubble which will be locked at the level of the tail.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 30
30- And a fourth (make the bubbles a little longer on the sides than those in the middle),
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 31
31- then a fifth one, which will be the last.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 32
32- Pierce and deflate the remaining balloon segment,
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 33
33- and tie it securely to the tail (or to the head) hiding the surplus balloon.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 34
34- Rearrange the segments of the belly and of the shell in a harmonious way,
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 35
35- as well as the legs and head of the balloon turtle.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 36
36- Then take our last white balloon and inflate it a little (about 3 fingers wide).
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 37
37- Now, for the eyes of the turtle, we are starting with a small bubble,
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 38
38- followed by a second bubble of the same size.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 39
39- Block the knot on one side, and pass the bubble of the remaining balloon segment over it,
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 40
40- and "roll it around" several times between the two bubbles in order to solidly secure the knot.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 41
41- Cut the unnecessary balloon excess,
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 33
42- and tie it with the balloon knot so that the two bubbles are firmly attached to each other.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 34
43- Widen the balloon loop that forms the turtle's head,
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 35
44- in order to slide one of the two white bubbles that we have just made.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 36
45- Once the bubble is on the other side, position the two white bubbles correctly so that they come out clearly on each side of the loop.
how to twist a balloon turtle, step 37
46- All that remains is to add 2 or 3 pencil strokes (felt pen) and you're done!
