Not your Average Pet: Meet a Kinkajou in Saginaw

SAGINAW, MI - A local pet shop has many exotic pets ready to find new families.

Custom Creatures, located at 2750 Bay Street in Suite 4, offers a variety of animals that aren’t very common.

One of those is a kinkajou, a relative of the raccoon that is often mistaken as a primate because of its features and traits.

Kallan Hohman, owner of the shop, said this is the third kinkajou they’ve brought into the store. He named her Sabine for her short stay with them as she’s already found her home.

Kinkajous are native to Central America and are frugivores, Hohman said. They’ll be six to eight pounds full grown.

“They’re sweethearts. A nickname for them is ‘honey bear’, they like anything sweet. So their favorite treat is actually candy, like lollipops, suckers, Tootsie Rolls, Jolly Ranchers, but anything on the sweet side for fruit,” Hohman said.

While Sabine has already been claimed, Hohman said he plans to bring in more kinkajous as they’ve been a favorite pick.

Hohman said kinkajous tend to favor a single person so a family with kids isn’t necessarily the best match for them.

Kinkajous have an average life span of at least 30 years. Hohman said the ideal home life for them includes allowing them to freely roam when the owner is available and then have them in a cage of proper size and closure at night.

They are nocturnal; however, Sabine was able to conform her sleep schedule to the store’s hours Hohman said.

“It’s like caring for a baby. They can wear diapers, you can put little clothes on them, take them around with you wherever you go,” Hohman said.
