A town in the UK is being praised by visitors who are impressed with its unique style, nice pubs and has become so popular it often has more than tourists than locals.

Located on the edge of England's largest natural lake - Lake Windermere - Ambleside is a little wonder with less than 3,000 residents. It has now become a major tourist attraction and visitors are full of compliments for what it has to offer. Walkers, hikers and climbers say it is a great place to use as a base to get to nearby routes and footpaths within the Lake District.

Ambleside is also home to the lake's ferry terminal at Waterhead Pier which has taken people back and forth since 1845. Today ferries can be taken to Bowness and Lakeside pier near Newby Bridge, Wray Castle and Brockhole Visitor Centre. In the summer months people can even take horse drawn carriages from the centre of Ambleside for the one mile ride to Waterhead Pier.

A short walk from the centre Ambleside leads to Stock Ghyll Force and its spectacular 70 foot waterfall, which can be viewed nearby and in the spring the area under the trees is a carpet of daffodils. The little town also has a full calendar of events that people flock to.

Every year on the first Saturday in July, Ambleside celebrates its Rushbearing Festival - a custom which dates back to the days when the earthen floor of the church was strewn with rushes for warmth and cleanliness. Ambleside Sports, held every August, is one of the most well known and well attended traditional countryside sports fairs in Cumbria. It is one of the few places to view the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling.

Rydal Sheepdog Trials & Hound Show is also held in August every year at Rydal Park, just half a mile north of Ambleside. One of the premier events of its type, spectators and competitors come from around the country. The Ambleside Christmas Lights & Firework Display fair is held in November. The celebrations spread across the town streets and link up with Christmas themed cruises on Windermere lake.

One visitor said: "Ambleside is a small town with less than 3,000 residents in the Lake District, very quiet and quiet, and there may be more tourists than the locals every day. There are many restaurants and bars in the town."

While another added: "Ambleside is a beautiful town in the north of Windermere, England. You can see the town about two kilometres walk from the boat. The layout of the town is similar. A commercial street, various shops, restaurants and bars on both sides, a church, a community, this town also has a large garden, people play and mini golf in the garden. Under the magnificent mountains are a variety of British buildings, rows of human-shaped roofs, belly windows, corner towers, handmade stone walls, and the splendor of flowers. It is a strong British country taste and unique style."
