Cala Mitjana Beach

Cala Mitjana is one of the magnificent beaches of the south of Menorca. Located very close to Cala Galdana, Mitjana gives us access to many of the less frequented beaches of the south like Cala Trebaluger, Fustam Cala or Cala Escorxada.

One of the main features of this beach is the long sand zone and how wide is the bathroom area. Thanks to this, although there are a lot of people on the beach, it’s always possible to find some space to put your towel, but sometimes it’s quite far from water.

You must also be aware that for its orientation 1½ hour before sunset the beach is covered by the shade of pine trees that surround it.

How To Get There

From both Maó and Ciutadella, you should go to Cala Galdana. Before arriving take the detour to the left. It’s fairly well indicated.

During summer days when the occupation is high, cars can be seen parked on the side of the road. The Cala Mitjana parking is free. Time ago it was about 100 meters from the beach but since 2013 is about a 10 minute walk when you go there and 15 minutes to go back.

Even after the change of parking, the beach is usually very crowded.

Once You Get There

Cala Mitjana offers plenty of options to the visitors.

In addition to the frontline sand area the beach is very deep, so there are picnic areas in the shade, with comfortable benches and tables to make a snack.

You can also try to visit Cala Mitjaneta, a tiny cove with little sand zone. It’s on the right very close to Cala Mitjana. It’s nice and sometimes there are only 2 or 3 people, depending on how much sand there is.

Jumping From The Cliffs

The adventurous ones are lucky because in the left side of the cove there is a cliff from where you can jump into the sea without danger.

It’s not as comfortable and there aren’t so many jumps as in Cala en Brut, but is also a fun area. The platform from where most people jump has a height of approximately 9 or 10 meters.

Obviously, before jumping is important to ensure that there is nobody in the water. Take calculated the momentum and to avoid accidents never jump holding someone else. When two people jump together, if one of them repents at the last moment and stops, the danger to fall over the cliff is very high (I’ve seen some accidents fortunately without serious consequences).

Hikers and walkers will also enjoy Cala Mitjana because from there you can go to Cala Trebalúger, Cala Fustam and Cala Escorxada, over the famous Camí de Cavalls. I recommend to those who want to walk trying to arrive to Cala Escorxada but I have to say that the route is very long (1 hour or more)!

During the path leading to Cala Trebalúger you can see a small bunker with view of the bay of the cave. I don’t know the history or the purpose of the construction but inside, if entry is allowed, you can take good pictures.

Hotels Near Cala Mitjana

Cala Mitjana is lucky to have Cala Galdana beside because this one distracts the attention of some tourists, but not all! If you want to stay near Cala Mitjana I recommend two very different options of rural tourism and easygoing!

  • Agroturisme Binisaid: rural hotel close to Mitjana, so much that if you like walking you can go walking (2.5km), but beware with the road! There are rooms but you can also rent an apartment with kitchen!
  • Hotel Sol Gavilanes: The insignia of Cala Galdana! Hated by many and loved by so many, its presence on the beach does not go unnoticed. Bring camera to take pictures from the room with views of the bay of Galdana!
